Holy macaroni, you pulled the trigger and bought the Focal 1028Be?:D

Well, congratulations!

Now I must put the Focal 1028 on my to-audition list.:D

So recap for us again the sound difference between the S8, 804D, & 1028Be.:D

I wasn't sure whether you were going to get the B&W or Focal.

Woohoo!!! Congrats buddy!

Fellas, we should all meet at RMAF 2012. It's in October, right around the time of my middle daughter's birthday, but the wife and I will plan the party for the weekend before or after RMAF. It's really a good time and I encourage everyone to attend at least once.

The only thing I can add to my post#555 is that I used the following to test:

Bass drum - Telarc CD 80078 Fanfare for the Common Man, the S8 was the deepest, but the S6 sounded warmer or perhaps it was just not as loud, the 804 dia had the best dynamic to the point the opening startled me and that's does not happen often, the 1028 was in a difference place with different associated equipment so it would be hard to compare but to my ears they sounded neutral.

Piano and orchestra - Chesky Record CD41, Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 4 in G minor, the S8 sounded best in the beginning but after moving the 804 dia to where the S8 was, it became the better one in terms of the piano sounding more like what I heard in live concert. The 804 also has more pin point imaging and wider soundstage. The S8 was just as smooth with strings as the 804 but the woodwinds did seem a touch more aggressive than real. The 1028 did not have the 804's width and pin point imaging but its ability to separate out the individual types of instrument seemed to be the best among the group.

Symphony for dynamic range and ability to separate different instruments and layers - Reference Recordings RR-11CD, Berlioz's symphonie Fantastique op. 14, I felt it was a tie between the Focal and the B&W but the S8 did well in terms of layering from the low to the mids but seemed less transparent.

Violin and orchestra - Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in D major op. 35. Here the 1028 did its best. Remember I always felt the P360 did not do well in this department, in that the violin would sound grainy. Well, the 1028 was so good that I could close my eyes and imagine myself in the conert hall where Anne-sophie mutter was performing. The 804 and the S8 were great too just not as good.

I used specific tracks of the above disc and played them multiple times. Overall the S8 bothered me a little due to the fac that everytime I switch to it I was force to turn down the volume by 3 to 6 dB. Next time I audition speakers I will bring the RS sound meter with me. I also found that the difference between those speakers were not really that big. In fact, I thought the S8 sounded very similar to my Veritas 2.3i while the 804 and 1028 were only slightly better.

Point of diminishing returns.:D

Even when you audition speakers that cost over $20K, you will find that they sound more similar to your Veritas than they differ.

Great sound does not have to cost $8K, $10K, $20K.

At this level, you get a little more refinement in sound quality, but a lot more refinement in aesthetics. :D

I was telling DenPureSound that I was actually listening to more music when I had my BP7000SC than I do now. Now I listen more to the aesthetics.

Now I find myself staring at the Salon2 & 201/2's cabinets more.:D

Yeah, who did they make this RMAF for anyway?

Parents with school kids or single men and retired men with no school age kids!:D

I have to roll my eyes on this one.:D

Just tweaking them around here -- we LOVE the BiPolar sound quality. Finally, got back the mids, and the Alum. tweets are sweet as well.

http://www.definitivetech.com/Products/products.aspx?path=Old%20Models&productid=BP7001SC

We auditioned the DT BP7000SC's, 8080's, 8060's, 8040's, Mythos ST SuperTower, and the Mythos STS SuperTowers, and of course the Golden Ear Triton Twos.

#1 - was BP7000SC (Would of bought these, but Dealer would not break up the set of five) -- not much diff. vs. the 7001's per our ears.
#2 - was BP7001SC
#3 - was Mythos ST SuperTower (to me these sounded very nice also - extruded Alum. enclosure)
... forget the rest was our opinion.

Very cool that at the beginning of the thread, neither DenPureSound nor PENG had their "dream-for-now" speakers.

There was actually even a little bet to see who would buy first. Just for fun and games, of course.

I bet most of you did not expect DenPureSound to be first one - TWICE.:D

Now DenPureSound has his BP7001SC all set up in his room.

In a day or two, PENG will also have his Focal 1028.

Now what will they do with their old speakers?:D

Hold off on the payouts for those bets; I think a stipulation should be that they both have to still own the speakers after two months. Let's see if one or both of them return the speakers or not.:) I think PENG will keep his, but it could go either way with DPS.

Now that's just mean. :D

I'm sure both will keep their speakers for a long time.

DenPureSound was telling me last night that both his wife and he are extremely happy with the BP7001SC.

I'm sure PENG will also be extremely happy.

We'll see how long that lasts.:D Sorry, I just couldn't help myself.
I was extremely happy with my BP7001SC & BP7000SC until I gave in to peer pressure on this forum.:D

I paid $2500 for my BP7001SC. I ended up paying $10,000 for my Orion system (XO + amp).

Sure, the Orion are better. But they are not $7500 better. And now that the Orion are $15,000 + amp, they are certainly not $13000 better.

And the Salon2 are not $18000 better.

Just like the Focal 1028 are not $6000 better than the Veritas that PENG has.:D
