Great Work Craig

I am looking forward to your findings--this should be great. This one thread is sole reason I signed up in yet another forum, thanks again craig.

Craig....where are the pics man? THE PICS!@!!! :D

...will this do?:D

<edit>
P.S. I located some organically grown California popcorn genetically engineered to be superior to anything east of these parts...99.8% of buyers claim it is also less filling and tastes great.

More ideas ...

Guys - One of the reasons for bringing the thread here is to hopefully allow the time to have a true, long term look at both subwoofers.

On AVS, there are already all sorts of "agenda" comments going around. There is no agenda here, other than to try to have some fun, and to also explore how much performance these subwoofers can deliver.

Tonight, I plan on using War of the Worlds, as promised - and perhaps a few other movies. I will be setting the "peak hold" on TrueRTA, and will then run a few minutes of the bass spectaculars from each movie. If anyone has a waterfall chart with a specific scene, let's take a look at that, too.

Once each scene has been measured from each subwoofer, and I have given my best shot at the subjective portion, we can look at the FR of what was actually delivered from each subwoofer.

Bass in this disc (Two Against Nature DVD/A from Steely Dan) is broken into two basic components - a Kick drum which hits from the mid 40's down to the low 20's, depending on which drummer was sitting in.

Michael White, for example, has a VERY deep kick drum - the type that whacks you in the chest, even at moderate volumes.

Both subwoofers were equally adept at delivering the goods here.

The difference between these two subs is in the bass guitar work of Walter Becker and Tom Barney. While listening, it was clear one of the subs was more clearly playing the bassguitar, while the other had bass guitar being more distant.

Round # 1 goes to the Hsu VTF-3 HO.
Craig I'm confused by the statement highlighted in bold above. Did you mean that one sub had the bass guitar imaged more forward than the other? Or, did you mean that one sub reproduced the bass guitar more clearer (cleaner? more distinctly?) than the other.

I know a lot of guys don't like the subjective hyperbole often used to describe the sound of a sub or speaker, but I'm curious as to what you heard that led you say "Round #1 goes to the HSU..." :)

Jack ... No wonder you were confused ... That wording SUCKED ! ... :D

The VTF-3 HO sounded more like Walter was in the room playing a real bass guitar. It was more articulate, and palpable.

In needs of a sub soon...

Craig, I have to say the fate of my soon to be sub is in your hands. I've read those shouting match at AV forums and got so confused. At first I wanted to go with the EP600 then the SVS pb12-ultra/2 and now I'm waiting for your opinion on the HSU VTF-3 HO...I'm so unable to make a decision.

How big is the room, and are you a music or movie guy? You really can't lose with any of those subs listed.

LOL! :D naisphoo, I DO know what you mean. To the average guy, this is all so confusing. I don't mean to speak for anyone other than myself, but IMHO I believe all the subs you've mentioned are competent and worthy of consideration. The downside to that is that it makes the choice just that much more difficult. :( The upside is, no matter which one you chose, you're going to get a good product, and will, in all probability, be completely happy with it. :)

If you're willing to smack down that kind of loot on a sub why not look at the Maestro from aci. I believe Craig will back me up on this recommendation (he used to have 2).

Gotta love it eh Craig? You make a thread like this, and all of a sudden the fate of peoples sub-future rests in your hands.

No pressure Craig. :D

Buckeyefan, my room is 20'X25' with a cathedrale ceiling and I think the maximum height is about 15' I think, just a rough estimate. It's a big four seasons porch.
Ajax, i thank you for your input. Yes it is quite confusing to a newbie like me. It's been 2 months now that I'm looking for a sub and I'm still unable to make a definitive decision. In the last few days I've narrowed them down to the EP600 and the SVS pb12-ultra/2 but then the HSU VTF-3 HO showed up out of nowhere.
Craig I'm still waiting for you as I want to watch King Kong with a sub preferably.

Craig,

Just checking in.

Looking forward to some great BLT results.

Can you describe the fit and finish of the new HSU, are the top and bottom panels like the VTF-3 MKII, what feet does it stand on and how high off the floor, what's the grill made of, etc.?

She let your daughter use the camera at the Nov. 20 GTG, don't tell me you dropped the thing once.;) :D

I'm curious to know what your system is to evaluate the subs. Will it be score sheets and personal note area like the GTG?
