So I just discovered my HK 435 auto eq makes a noticeable difference with the sub. But, it lost the most recent eq settings after the power went out yesterday (F-zero tornado hit my neighborhood, hehe). So, time to update the firmware and try again. One of these days I'll find the time to get my BFD working as well.

I'll be curious to hear what you think of "Kong."

"Amen" to the "keeping it friendly" thing.
Hey, 'Jax...hope you're well, my friend.

FWIW, I thought KK was absolutely superb in every detail. Beautiful sets, CGI and overall picture and great sound and cast.

No sub killing subsonics to speak of, but that doesn't hurt the flick at all, IMO.

I'm with you here, awaiting the verdict chez Chase:cool:

Craig,

What ever happened with the dead SMS-1? Apologies if I missed it.

Kong has some good bass in it. I expect the DTS version to be better though.
Surprisingly, most of the bass is from Kong breathing..

I agree Sheep, King Kong was a mild let down. I "only" got the DD version but still............I guess I was expecting too much. Still good though.:)

There is no DTS version. It will be coming out in the fall (most likely). Even the specail edition only has DD.

Jeff - The SMS-1 is still out - I may grab another Behringer EQ next week, just for the fun of it.

Kong was pretty good - his breathing had some good bass, and there is a lot of excellent 25-30 Hz stuff in it. Liked the movie - though the critters on the Island were a bit much. It was too gross for the ladies, and probably cost $100 mill in gross.

Both subwoofers were pretty evenly matched, again.

Look for that outdoor session on Sunday, it is supposed to be 55 and sunny.

It just went kaput last week - I turned it on, and it flashed on, and went out. I may try plugging it in again tomorrow, sometimes digital gear will do strange things, like stopping for a while, then re-starting.

At that point may as well wait for the HD variety then, eh?

We have a split decision. My left thumb up; my right thumb down. I really loved how the "connection" between Ann and Kong developed. In the original movie, Ann was terrified of Kong all the way to the end. In this one, a genuine affection between the two grows. I liked that.

I liked Kong too. His movements, expressions, eyes, etc. made him a very realistic, believable primate; scarred, and just a bit ugly without being repulsive. Really well done.

I thought the actress who played Ann was excellent. Kong wasn't the only one who connected with her.

I felt both Jack Black and Adrian Brody were miscast. Both did an adequate job of acting, but I didn't find them believable in their roles. Perhaps that has to do with the two actors who played their parts in the original. Black wasn't "huckster" enough, and Brody wasn't masculine enough.

I felt many of the jungle scenes were a tad over the top. I mean, Kong didn't fight just one T-REX. NO! He had to fight three. Giant worms, cockroaches, bats, yada yada yada. I loved the kid shooting the giant wasps(?) off Brody with a Thompson submachine gun while Brody was jumping and thrashing around. Having fired one of those things, I can tell you they are difficult to fire accurately. They rise as you fire. Realistically, Brody would've been swiss cheese. Those things were Just a bit overdone for my taste.

The sets and effects were terrific. Sound was excellent but not spectacular. It was neither too little nor too much. Overall, an enjoyable but flawed effort. Definitely worth seeing.

That's just my opinion. YMMV!

I ordered a Behringer DEQ2496 last night - it has 10 bands of parametric eq plus a 31 band graphic.

Looking at the various graphs of the subwoofers sans eq, they vary from within a 10 dB total window to a 35 dB total window, depending on room/listening position.

The 2496 should be here Tuesday - and we will kick the listening up a notch.

Craig, what's the difference between the BFD and the SMS-1? I'm trying to rationalize what's best to use for sub equalization. Thanks.

Some VTF-3HO Turbo pics

Just thought I'd prove that I actually had one :p

The little'er sub is the Rocket UFW-10. It's trying to be brave, but it isn't kidding anyone...it's cowering in fear.

My HT is something like Phase 3 of 6, so pardon what ugliness you see ;)

The SMS-1 is a totally self-contained unit, with 8 bands of Parametric EQ. It has a microphone, all cables necessary, etc ...

The Behringer has 10 bands of Parametric, a 31 band graphic, and a built in RTA. You still need a microphone, upgraded sound card ... etc ...

But - done properly, You can put together a solid eq set up with higher resolution with the Behringer. They even make a version without the graphic eq and RTA which can be picked up for $99, the 1124. It even has, if memory serves, 2 x 12 channels which can actually be used as a single channel, 24 band EQ.

Others may chime in with a better idea for a sound card ... but, here is one sample system ...

BEhringer BFD = $99
Behringer ECM-800 = $50
Microphone cord = $20
RCA Adaptors = $30
Getting Microphone calibrated = $50
TrutRTA = $99**
M-Audio Mobile-pre= $149 **

Assuming you already a computer, this means for $497 you can get a very precise subwoofer EQ. This system will allow 1/24th ocatave measurements, 1/60th octave as the narrowest EQ band, etc .... It is more complicated to use than is the SMS-1.

And ... for someone looking to do EQ-Ing "on the cheap", you CAN plot individual SPL points using a Rad Shack Meter, corrective graphs for the Rad Shack, and patience. This will get a guy into eq-ing for under $200 - because you lose TrueRTA, The microphone, sound card, adaptors ... you just need the 1124, a Rad Shack meter, and the adaptors.
