Craig, what's the difference between the BFD and the SMS-1? I'm trying to rationalize what's best to use for sub equalization. Thanks.
The SMS-1 is a totally self-contained unit, with 8 bands of Parametric EQ. It has a microphone, all cables necessary, etc ...
The Behringer has 10 bands of Parametric, a 31 band graphic, and a built in RTA. You still need a microphone, upgraded sound card ... etc ...
But - done properly, You can put together a solid eq set up with higher resolution with the Behringer. They even make a version without the graphic eq and RTA which can be picked up for $99, the 1124. It even has, if memory serves, 2 x 12 channels which can actually be used as a single channel, 24 band EQ.
Others may chime in with a better idea for a sound card ... but, here is one sample system ...
BEhringer BFD = $99
Behringer ECM-800 = $50
Microphone cord = $20
RCA Adaptors = $30
Getting Microphone calibrated = $50
TrutRTA = $99**
M-Audio Mobile-pre= $149 **
Assuming you already a computer, this means for $497 you can get a very precise subwoofer EQ. This system will allow 1/24th ocatave measurements, 1/60th octave as the narrowest EQ band, etc .... It is more complicated to use than is the SMS-1.
And ... for someone looking to do EQ-Ing "on the cheap", you CAN plot individual SPL points using a Rad Shack Meter, corrective graphs for the Rad Shack, and patience. This will get a guy into eq-ing for under $200 - because you lose TrueRTA, The microphone, sound card, adaptors ... you just need the 1124, a Rad Shack meter, and the adaptors.
