Speaker of the House
Soldier: :My King, I have talked with the men, we will all fight to the last"
Leonidas: "This is not a democracy, when I want you to die I will order it, not ask you."
That IS a good line! I hate knowing that a line like that wasn't in the movie. Though it does make him slightly less likable as a character. But way more badass.

HBO's ROME (epsiode 1) had a phalanx without the aid of impressive camerawork and editing. It wasn't as cool looking.
Alas, I have no HBO. Frickin' Comcast. I'm paying about $80 a month for expanded basic cable with high def and a DVR!

Anyone catch the Battle of Thermopylae special on the History channel? (migh thave been discovery, I can't remember).

It was pretty good. I was actually slightly surprised at hwo the movie did follow the "actual events". With some criticism, even though I loved the movie, I figured it was just a movie very loosely based on "facts". Actually, though, it appears the movie basically follows the "actual events", or as best explained by historical experts in the special.

Yes, the movie was artistically wholly innacurate, but the basis and flow of events was pretty damn close.

Leonidas was a badass though. Sparta was a unique and interesting place.

That quote would remind people of the current US President, would it not? As in "way more stupid"?

This is a visually amazing movie. It is as close to history as it needs to be (after all, Thermopylae is as much metaphor as fact), but the visuals are amazing. The eyes of the Spartans have amazing intensity and I presume that the bodies (buff in the extreme) are at least somewhat digitally enhanced. The skin of the characters has 3-d texture that makes the Spartans seem really human, as contrasted to the armored, face-covered Persian hordes. Very stark and strong faces dominate the movie. Colors are mainly sepia and gray.

I thought that the portrayal of the Spartans going into battle with just helmet, cape and leather jockstrap was somewhat extreme until I did some web cruising and found a number of paintings from the Renaissance whose painters saw them dressed pretty much the same way except without the jock strap. In any event, I could not take my eyes off the screen and will have to see this again. It's an orgy of blood, violence and flying limbs done like nothing seen before.

It's violence in the extreme, but considering the subject matter, appropriate. My teen daughter has seen it five times (so far, I think she's going again tomorrow) and she's quite sensitive to things like that but being so graphic (in the graphical novel sense) is isn't as much of a gross out as many bad horror movies. The leather jockstraps avoid the cringe factor of flying blades and sensitive tissue. There's no denying the nausea factor of face-to-face ancient world warfare. It's really an amazing visual experience and a powerful metaphor for sacrifice and courage in the face of overwhelming odds (hint - Thermopylae WAS courage and sacrifice against overwhelming odds. It paved the way for the sea battle of Salamis, which has been called the most influential single battle in history).

I think the "It's raining men" version is superior to the other "cake" version, you know, the Greeks and their reputation. At least I respect this movie, unlike Alexander. They should've spoofed that movie big time, that was "strait' outa' San Fran."

Just got back from the movie at a massive IMAX theater.

I was expecting some outstanding 1080p, superb bone crushing bass, and head twisting surround sound. I left audio/visually wanting to rent the movie in DTS ES 6.1 on my home system.

The film was very soft (could have been that massive screen), there was absolutely no bass, and although I did notice some surround sound, it was strictly behind us. We had perfect seats - a little bit above the midpoint of the theater and center stage. I'm not sure to blame the local theater, or the film/transfer itself. It was not even close to your typical Discovery/IMAX presentation.

I read no reviews on this flick, and I'm not sure if I even caught a trailer. My overall feeling on the movie was that is was a high budget, underacted, oversexed flick about a bunch of guys with makeup on their abs who would have never existed back in the day. The jumbo god-king, jumbo elephants, and jumbo rhino didn't do much for the movie either. The women were hot - nice eye candy for the male moviegoers. The Oracle chic was steamin'. I didn't see much plot either. I think the critics average grade of B is a bit high. The fighting scenes were great, but the lack of plot and terrible audio/crisp video killed it for me. Had I watched this at home, I may have felt different. It's a shame a movie theater with as much invested in it as an IMAX approved theater is, it didn't deliver.

I don't blame the few guys on here waiting for the DVD release. You'll enjoy it a bunch more if the sound and 1080i/p deliver.
