I wish the IMAX near me played movies. I would totally go see that if it were in IMAX here.

So who else is going to see this in IMAX?
Have mine and my friends' tickets ready, can't wait!
I have also never been to an IMAX theater in my life, which is also reason for excitement.

I'm not too gung ho on IMAX, last time I went for Star Wars. The movie was edited, some scenes were cut short. I remember people booing, we were very dissapointed. I'll see 300 first in a regular theater then maybe I'll go to an IMAX.

I saw the 12:30 pm show this afternoon, I played hooky from the office, I'm not going to say any spoliers, but a couple of gripes, IMO the cgi could've been better in certain scenes, the wolf for instance, the story drags a bit, I'm familiar with the real 300 Spartans story, this is a very loose interpretation of the historical account. It's very dramatic with the grey and sepia toned backgrounds, the acting is inspiring as is the message of the film, freedom has a price, often it has to be payed in blood. For some strange reason this movie brings to mind the situation in our country right now, the parallels were a bit unnerving. Will I see it again? no, it's not that kind of movie, but in Hi Def DVD it should look unbelievable. The action sequences are a bit truncated and the gore isn't as bad as I imagined it would have been, which is good as it doesn't detract from the story line. As I said the acting isn't bad for this caliber of movie and King Leonidas is very inspiring as a king and warrior. As for King Artaxerxes, well, let's just say he could've been a performer at a San Francisco ball, that's all I'll say about that! Now that I saw it in the big screen am I excited enough to go back, no.

This should be excellent at the Rave. They use DLP projection, and something beyond HD.:D The picture is always perfect at the Rave, never had that kind of experiance at a theater, perfect picture that is.:)

For everyone thinking this was going to be a historically accurate account of this event in history, you are barking up the wrong tree. This is a film version of Frank Miller's graphic novel, not a history lesson.

I saw it this evening, and it is pure testosterone (hence Sheep's comments). I am glad I watched it, but I don't think I could sit through it again. I found it very visually pleasing, but a bit repetitive in the execution of the battle sequences. There were a few funny lines thrown in to lighten the mood.

As with most movies that get hyped to this degree, I found myself feeling slightly disappointed in the end. If you've watched the trailers a couple times, you will know what is coming in a lot of places in the movie. This ruined a lot of the suspense for me personally.

First let me say, I liked Sin City....now this is a very stylized 'Milleresque' movie. The battles are fun, and graphic. It has comicbook gore, almost a graphic novel on celluloid feel. There is no ambiguity, good guys are good, and bad are very bad. Don't worry about the deeper meaning, because there is none.... allegory maybe in the most general sense of the word, but I choose not to sully it with current events. It's the best telling of that story I can imagine, and I loved it. The visuals had depth, and didn't feel like green screen alla George Lucas, and the sound was great.

Enough said, go see this movie. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Thanks

Oh I knew I wasn't a history lesson, but like you I felt let down somewhat. It's good entertainment, but I would have waited for the DVD, ditto on the battle sequences. What is inspiring is the underlying premise of the storyline, freedom has it's price, and since the majority didn't want to or were afraid to admit it, it was left to a brave indiviual and 299 like minded heores with the insight and the will to to do for society what the weaker were afraid to do. It was easier to sell out to Persia, but that wasn't the Spartan way. That in itself makes the movie worthwhile.

For me that part was really cliche, and I dldn't need the reminder.:)

Well.... I'm well aware that freedom isn't free, and that often few sacrifice for many.

A similar message was given in Starship Troopers, and countless other war movies.

I really didn't mean to turn this into a dialouge on the genre. I was hoping to give an opinion. This movie is light on message, It's not Platoon, or Born on the Fourth of July. It's not Saving Private Ryan, or the Deer Hunter.

It's light fun.

Thought it was an intersting point of view, not a dialogue of merits.

I liked the movie. I've read a bit about the event at Thermopylae and I just finished reading Steven Pressfield "The Gates of Fire", another interpretation of the events.

It's interresting to find out that many cliché and epic movie/stories ideas find their roots in real life events that occured during the Antiquity. Greek tragedy, Roman ruins...

We shouldn't be surprised to hear the same stories told over and over again. What changes, is the way the story is told.
