Are surge protectors really necessary?... If YES, which brand!

These are best: Wiremold L10320 No power strip or conditioner will save your system from lightning. Most of those strips with a circuit breaker, noise filter, lights, swithes, fuses...reduce performance.

    Please help re: bookshelf

Oh yeah, the Spendors are another good one. It's true, this is a good price range to begin looking for floorstanders.

    Please help re: bookshelf

I would also go for the 705s, although in that price range you might want to try the Reference 3A Dulcet or Green Mountain Audio Europa.

    speaker help

My room is 12X18 with 8' celings and a 7X7 alcove, and the Microwalsh talls seem to integrate well. I was thinking of monitors and a sub, but found the floorstanders had a more cohesive sound. They are getting into the 30 hz range in my room. The Ohms are really easy to place - no head in...

    speaker help

Well, since a lot of these decisions are personal - and if by chance we do have the same sound in mind (I do like NAD and VR1s) my suggestions would be Green Mountain Audio Europa or Ohm Microwalsh Talls. Now the GMAs and Ohms are about a grand, but can take on ANYTHING in the $2500 range -...

Is there any way to defeat 3:2 pulldown?

3:3 sounds cool. BTW, there were originally 2 questions asked so I answered both.

    Gallo or RPH?

The Gallos, without a doubt. No comparison.

    Hybrid Tube Integrated Amp

Actually my system is all solid state McIntosh right now, but I have heard tube/SS combos, and found the same versatility that you did.

Is there any way to defeat 3:2 pulldown?

It helps to have a progressive scan DVD player and compatible TV. It's not going to run at 24, but the 3:2 problem is improved.

    The “Sound” of receivers…

I also think the tube revival is possibly due to poor CD mastering. Although not a tube amp, when Arcam discontinued my old Alpha 8 amplifier, they announced that they "compensated" the design to accomodate bright CD recordings.

    The “Sound” of receivers…

Chris, I know what you mean about squashing the music in the end. I've worked on some projects where we remaster or remix and leave in the low end. If someone can't handle it, then too bad for them! Thanks for the tip on the headphones, I really like Dunlavy speakers, so I'll try the...

    The “Sound” of receivers…

Hey Chris, what deadly accurate speakers were you listening on? They sound ruthless!! Most monitors used in recording/mixing are not up to the task, hence the wonky mixes. n

    Redefining Hi-End vs. Hi-Fi

Accurate cannot be had for a reasonable price. But I guess that depends on what you think a reasonable price is.

    Hybrid Tube Integrated Amp

I love the sound of tube/pre, SS/power combos. Have you checked out responseaudio.com ? They have all of the Jolidas which are great, and they also do mods. Just talk to them, and I'm sure they'll help.

    Jazz Music-Where To Start?

Listening hang JoeE has the right idea. I've been into jazz for years, but over the last couple of years, I've had the oppurtunity to have some late night "listening hangs" with a great, first-call drummer. It's a great education to have someone to suggest, then take you through the music...

    The “Sound” of receivers…

A few years ago I did a test with a guitar player that I play with. He's not as into equipment as I am, but he DOES hate NS-10s, so he understands. We did a test between an entry level Yamaha receiver two Arcam integrated amps and a McIntosh integrated. He guessed right every single time...

    Ohm Loudspeakers?

The Ohms don't rely on room reflections. You do have to give them some room, but not a lot. Although they are omnis, they actually damp the rear of the speakers to minimize rear reflections.

Satellite speakers options (other than bose system)

That is a great Bose description. Another option is Anthony Gallo Acoustics: roundsound.com

    Smooth and Warm Sounding Speakers

For smoothness, try Vandersteen, Ohm and Magnepan. All three have a smooth, open, boxless sound. Checking out specs is fine, but it's not all about frequency response. The time domain is very important, so when possible, look for a step response measurement.
