    receiver for Ohm Walsh speakers

Depending on room size, you should be able to get reasonable levels starting with about 50 Watts. I would suggest atleast $1000 for amplification to be in the same league as the Ohms. I'm driving a pair of MicroWalsh Talls with a 100 watt McIntosh Integrated and although the volume control is...

    Floorstanding mains <$800/pr recommendations

Vandys aren't for everyone, but I think Richard Vandersteen has made some imrovements in the last 16 years. He hasn't been in business for almost the last 30 without doing so. Although remember that the basic design is the same - says a lot.

    Floorstanding mains <$800/pr recommendations

I agree with the Maggie MMG recommend. In your price range I don't think it's unreasonable to be willing to deal with the positioning, listening window situation with that design. Once you get them comfy in your listening room (if they fit), every other speaker sounds like sound coming from a...

    Jazz Fusion

Their sound has an edge to it - so it's not as "smooth" as most of today's fusion - and never cheesy. The vocals (no backgrounds) are a little "out" but beautiful. I've seen them back up MeShell so they can groove without all of the notes, but when they're doing their own thing, it's another...

    Jazz Fusion

Screaming Headless Torsos are my all-time favorite fusion band, even girls like them. "1995" "Live" are two great recordings. I haven't heard the new album yet ("2005").

    old ohm d2s for mains?

Ohm is very much alive. I've been listening to a pair of Microwalsh Talls for a few months now. For your HT system, I would talk to the guys over there for suggestions. ohmspeakers.com 6moons audio reviews: Ohm Acoustics Walsh Micro Tall 6moons audio reviews: Ohm Walsh 4.5.2 upgrade to...

Looking for some help on speaker suggestions

For that kind of dough, I would suggest Ohm, Vandersteen, Meadowlark, Green Mountain Audio or Dynaudio. (With the exception of Dynaudio), I really get behind the time coherent designs available today. It's hard to design a time coherent speaker, but in you're price range design, materials and...

What Is the best live show you've seen?

I read the Jaco book, it's excellent - I hope they do the movie, I never heard about it until now.

What Is the best live show you've seen?

Hey 20 to 20, I saw the tribute that was done right after he died. It was done at the Lonestar, because it was the only club in town that would still let him come in and play (when he was messed up - when you happened to see him). It was just an ongoing combination of players/close...

What Is the best live show you've seen?

James Brown in the mid-80s at the old Lonestar in NYC (hey 20to20 K - also where I saw the Jaco Tribute shortly after he died). Nice small venue - amazing gig. Sun Ra somewehere in the middle of nowhere, near Woodstock. Another smaller venue, I'm still not sure how he fit his big band on...

    Speakers suitable for Music

It's true, a speaker of good design can handle Music, Dialogue and SFX (real or not). I think the distinction from speaker brands to keep in mind, are those of quality and those targeted for the "Home Theatre Crowd." The former is what I think most of us here are interested in, the latter a...

    30 years later

My dad had a pair of Polk Audio Monitor 10s from around '79. They also were a solid and well made speaker, back when Polk consisted of a line of 3 speakers (all a variations of the same theme). Today, many of the big companies are constantly introducing various product ranges to try to keep...

    Speakers suitable for Music

Maggie 1.6s are nice sounding speakers. If you have the room for them, don't mind the small sweet spot (don't stand up) and have the power, it's really hard to beat them for the money. As mentioned above, Vandersteens are another great classic speaker worth auditioning (I'm into the time...

    Hi Fi Hall of Fame?

Right on with the Ohm F's. (Obviously they've since addressed the power problems) - Ohm's Walsh designs are still one of the best around today. NAD 3020 Vandersteen Model 2 McIntosh MC275 Magnepan 1.6

    Bose Vs. Orb

I like the Gallo sub sats. I've heard them and they sound much better than Bose and look very cool. The Orbs seem to be a bit of a copy, but they might sound ok - haven't heard them. I would try them over Bose, if they sound anything like the Gallos, then they are better than bose! Hope...

    Best 2 Channel Amp Choice?

Go for the Crown. Where I work, we have Alesis and Crown, among others, the Crown is much much better sounding than the Alesis. I would also stay away from Adcom. "Studio" and home amps is BS. Good sound is good sound. I've been in homes with Bryston "pro" amps, and major recording studios...

    Vandersteen HT Setup

McCormack Pre and power amps are really great. Another way to go is Audio by VanAlstine - avahifi.com. I don't think they have surround processor, but their amplifiers are amazing. Enjoy those Vandys - truly great sounding, classic speakers!
