Can a speaker ever perfectly replicate live music?

Not me. The last time I saw Elvin Jones play was a wonderful experience. What I (and many others that night) felt, cannot be translated on any sytem. I was floating down the street, walking home after that gig. I've never felt that listening to any system.

Can a speaker ever perfectly replicate live music?

I hope I remember correctly, but I think Mark Levinson used to (and still may) record someone and then immediately play the event back on his system. I also think Richard Vandersteen used to do blindfold tests with live sound vs. his speakers.

Worst Period In Rock/Pop Music History???

Radiohead's music (one of our few hopes right now) unfortunately is few and far between. 25-30 years ago similar creative output was more commonplace. I'm very afraid that a lot of what happened musically not so long ago, is already a lost art. BTW, I'm not old enough to be an old fart.

Speakers; When is good enough, enough

It's funny because the day that I bought my McIntosh amp, I heard a rig in the store that I really did not like. It was a pair of 1200 watt Mac amps driving a pair of Joseph Audio Pearls. I just did not like it - but I was there to pick up my (lower powered) amplifier, and I'm glad I bought it...

Speakers; When is good enough, enough

Is your speaker system time coherent? Have you ever been in a high end recording studio? I don't disagree with what you're saying, I'm just trying to understand a little better where you're coming from!

Speakers; When is good enough, enough

Nice post. I like your your quote on the bottom - but I can't help think that people think that way because the time domain wasn't addressed. Ha!

Speakers; When is good enough, enough

Dr. Dean it seems to me that you're talking about two things. One, I do agree that placebo effects can and do occur. I'm a film editor and sometimes I'll be asked to make a minute change. I've had people working with me say that it looks better on playback when I haven't even changed...

Speakers; When is good enough, enough

Return on one's investment is a tricky thing. Personally, I stay away from the typical manufacturers. I've found for about the same money or slightly more, some of the less mainstream designs are much better. Yes, technology has improved, but over time you'll lose interest in your rig if the...

    Speaker cable upgrade - Flexygy?

Cobalt seems good. I checked with Cobalt and they said that they manufacture the cables themselves. That's a classic rig you have there! I have a McIntosh/ohm combo myself. Thanks again.

    Speaker cable upgrade - Flexygy?

Thanks for the tip. Since I'm only using a single run, I was thinking of spending a little more to see if there would be improvements, otherwise I'd try the Belden combo. I'm not into the small guys like Cobalt, because I'm not sure what's really behind the cable. If it's just some Canare or...

    Speaker cable upgrade - Flexygy?

I'm upgrading from Canare speaker cables. Does anybody have any experience with River cable's Flexygy or Kimber's 4TC? I was really ready for the River Cables, but noticed that their prices jumped considerably in the last couple of months, and that they may be a little to warm sounding for my...
