    McIntosh opinions

I like Mac gear. It's maybe not as "hi-fi" as some other, more hi-rez gear, but they do quite well. I remember first hearing solid stade Mac amps at the Hit Factory in NYC, driving a huge pair of Urie Monitors. I never thought I'd see McIntosh in a recording studio, but those amps chugged...

Denon 5805- NOT a powerhouse receiver!

"...just a little someting for others to think about when reading specs and attributing too much importance to reading them as opposed to listening". AGREED.

    72se v VR2's

Tough call, I'd go with the Dyns. I haven't heard the se, but the 72s are great. I'm not to into the rear firing tweeters, I just turn it off.

    Budget floorstanders for me?

The ones that your local retailer are a good place to start. You mentioned internet-direct possibilities, so another option (if you can eek out another c-note) are the Ohm MicroWalsh Talls: Here's a review. http://www.sixmoons.com/audioreviews/walsh/micro.html I'm not a huge fan of...

    paradigm great speakers?

Ok, getting back to the original post - I jumped on the bandwagon when I read RLA's post. As alternatives to Paradigm I would suggest listening to the following: Dynaudio Audience Series Audio Note AX AZ series Sequerra Met 7.7 MkIV NSM M5 Ohm Microwalsh Tall In a nutshell, the...

    paradigm great speakers?

Bose is very popular too. Don't get excited, it's just my opinion. Also, keep in mind that there are other competitors than just B&W.

    paradigm great speakers?

Options! Right on RLA...Paradigm are extremely over-rated, as long as one does not extend themselves above the entry level series. In the $750/above price range, they are easily overshadowed.

    From Denon to Nad

Illuminatti, if you're able to a/b the nad then trust your own ears and decide. I believe the nad a better performer soundwise, but don't believe me, and don't believe the numbers naysayers that say all amps sound the same. BTW, this also applies to reviews - never buy on a review.

    Speaker system at around $3K...

Home trial is the only way to hear how the speakers will fit into your system and your room. That said, I would suggest a set of Ohm Walsh series - a lot of competition in this price range, but I think the Ohm's are one of the best. These speakers can offer great sound for movies without...

Help choosing a studio monitor pair.

I would suggest a pair of Green Mountain Audio Europas. I'm eventually going to get a pair - right now I'm running a pair of Sequerra Met 7s so my basic advice is go with time coherent monitors - ESPECIALLY in a studio environment! Don't get hung up on flat frequency response curves, it's...

    I've noticed...

When you're auditioning speakers, just tell 'em you listen to everything! Your speakers should be able to handle any style of music, and the same goes for watching movies. Also beware of speakers that can't handle less than stellar recordings.

First Hi/Fi - Home Theater Experience

Being a musician and wanting to always hear music got me interested in Hi-Fi. My dad's old Fischer tube integrated/tube tuner probably had something to do with it too.

    Crank it up blues

Two classic blues recordings for both sound and performance are Muddy Waters "Hard Again" and Buddy Guy "Sweet Tea." Muddy's was recorded in '77 with all kinds of great room tone with a great sounding kik drum, even some of the close mic'd stuff sounds right. Buddy's was recorded a couple...

    Jazz Fusion

Roger that 20to20k. Those 3 Spyro Gyra albums stand out for me too. I'm a big Eli Konikoff fan - great sounding drummer.

    Solid Core

I'm actually asking because I'm thinking of a DIY version. People were raving about the sound of the Anti-Cables, but I searched around and some others mentioned that it's just magnet wire. I might just buy a big spool for few bucks, put some spades on and done. Thought I'd just run it by...
