20 Albums You Should Own, But Probably Don't

A few I have been into lately, with emphasis on non-mainstream stuff you might not know about otherwise. Pop/Rock: Venus Hum, "The Colors in the Wheel"-interesting electronic/dance music, simply amazing vocals. The Residents, anything you can find-redefines "weird". Neutral Milk Hotel, "In...

    Speaker distance

Ideally, your main listening position should be 81" from each speaker, to form an equilateral triangle. The amount of toe-in varies with both the specific speakers and the room.

Cerwin-Vega vs JBL - Depth vs Punch

Way back when I got my first car, my parents urged me to find the cheapest piece of junk I could. Their reasoning was that I wasn't responsible enough yet to take care of something decent. Your comments about CV make sense from that point of view. A person probably shouldn't get better quality...

CD Players- $200-$500 $1000 and up.

To me, all CD players (and DVD players) sound great. I love anything that can make my system sound better, but I am skeptical that a more expensive CD player would make a real difference.

Cerwin-Vega vs JBL - Depth vs Punch

IMO Cerwin Vegas are great party speakers. They play loud, fill up a big room, and have lots of bass "slam". When it comes time to sit down and really listen to the music, however, they just don't cut it. Some (far from all) JBLs are better in this regard. Among affordable speakers, Infinity...

I use a TV rack that I got at Target for $20.:)

    Phantom center and dynamic range

I have read claims that downmixing Dolby Digital to fewer than 5.1 channels (eg by using phantom center) causes a reduction in dynamic range. Does anyone here know if this is true?

    Speaker wattage vs. receiver wattage

The biggest risk of damaging speakers is from a receiver with too little power. In this case, it can start to clip when turned up. Also, amps generally sound best when operated well below their maximum output.

Athena Technologies AS-B1 bookshelf speaker system.

I heard the B1s and thought they offered very good performance/price even at regular price. With that deep of a discount, they are a steal!

Old CD players 80's to early 90's Thread.

I got the original Sony Discman when it came out (in fact, I think they were calling it "CD Walkman" then.) Some home CD players today are smaller and lighter. It sounded good if you weren't actually walking!

    What’s Your Favorite Speakers < $3,000?

I disagree that high end electronics are a requirement. My electronics are certainly nothing special (nowhere near the same price class as the speakers) and, as I said, I love the way my 705s sound. They do like a bit of volume to sound "full", but anything with 100 watts/ch will drive them...

    $600 and under bookshelf suggustions

The problem I have with ID brands, including Aperion, is that I cannot audition them without buying them. Even if they give a full refund and pay for shipping, it is a lot of time and effort. I will always be likely to prefer speakers that I can hear in a showroom. (This does not in any way...

Thinking of getting a more Efficient Loud Speakers

Ok. So then what is the efficiency? I always thought that sensitive/efficient speakers were primarily for use with tube amps, where the cost per watt is very high. Most solid state amps have enough power to drive even fairly low sensitivity speakers to ear-bleeding volume.

    What’s Your Favorite Speakers < $3,000?

I voted for the 703s because they are the only B&Ws on your list. I love my 705s. If I were to make that big of a jump in price, I would be more inclined to get the 805s than the 703s. I am satisfied enough with my 705s that I am not sure I could justify the cost of upgrading to either one...

    $600 and under bookshelf suggustions

I think that B&W 602s are excellent for $600. The 601s are around $150 less, and almost as good except for bass.

    3 centers for LCR?

Some companies make speakers specifically intended for this. These usually contain "LCR" in the model name. Def Tech is one I know of offhand.

    Monitor Audio or Paradigm

I would prefer MA. Then again, I tend to prefer the "laid back" British sound to the "front and center" Canadian sound in general.

    Should i upgrade my speakers.

Just remember that, once started, upgrading never ends. When you get something new, it is wonderful and really enjoyable, for a while. Eventually, you start wanting something else. My conclusion is that it is really newness itself that we are after, rather than "better". (Everyone loves that...

    $500 Challenge

I second that. (Especially if you could go up to $600 and get the 602s.)

    Speaker Reviews, a Critique

To say that a speaker is merely the best in its price range is almost an insult, considering how many are "better than speakers costing three times as much".:D
