    Speaker Reviews, a Critique

While A/B comparison is ideal, it is also frequently impossible. If I think of even two (much less three or more) similar-priced speakers that I would like to compare, it is virtually certain that they are in separate stores (if they are available locally at all.) Someone rich enough could buy...

    Sub in apartment

The Def Tech PS80. It was on sale for half price (regular $400.) My mains are B&W 705s. Being fairly small, it would seem as though they would really need a sub, but I no longer think that they do.

    Sub in apartment

I brought home a sub and tried it. While the bass was louder and more extended, I did not find that it enhanced my enjoyment of the music per se enough to justify either the expense or the risk of complaints (nor did it reveal any previously "hidden" notes.) It went back to the store. I...

    CD player upgrade?

So if I replaced my stereo receiver with an HT receiver (one that does have digital inputs), and used a fiber optic cable, that would give me better sound? (I have seen some pretty nice looking HT receivers around $300, which I could manage easily enough.:) ) Oh, I forgot to add that there is...

    CD player upgrade?

In my stereo system (not HT), I currently have a fairly cheap CD player (Sony CE375), and my receiver has only analog inputs. My questions are 1) Would I get a really noticeable improvement by buying a better CD player? and 2) How much would I have to spend?

Is there intrinsic difference sound of horn tweeter vs. conventional tweeter?

While I can't say which is better or worse (this being personal preference), I will say that they image differently. Roughly speaking, conventional tweeters sound like they are in front of me while horns make me feel like I am "inside" the sound, if that makes any sense. (FWIW I don't care for...

    Sub in apartment

I think my bookshelf speakers might sound better with a sub, but I live in an apartment and worry about catching flak for it. If I get a relatively small one (say 8") and locate it 8'-10' from the shared wall, is it likely to cause a problem? (Oh, and I also have an upstairs neighbor.)

    B&W 705: Disappointing

I have had the 705s for a few months now. My obsevations so far: 1) Very detailed highs (almost to the point of hearing the individual ridges on brushed cymbals) with a slight trace of brightness, but never fatiguing. 2) Natural midrange, especially on vocals (I can distinguish between the...

WHich part of the 5.1 can I skip for the time being?

Sorry to hijack, but I can only post responses right now. I didn't get my registration email, and I can't contact an administrator because I am not registered! Any idea how to get past this catch-22?

    Panasonic DVD-S97 or Pioneer DV46AV

I cant start a new thread yet, so I will ask this here: The Panasonic digital receivers seem to be regarded as "giant killers", so I was wondering if the same is true of their DVD players for CD playback. In particular, they have a $100 one that plays HDCDs, and I wonder if it could be as good...

WHich part of the 5.1 can I skip for the time being?

I agree. In fact, I think that it is a common mistake to buy a cheap but complete surround system right away. Good mains are quite satisfying on their own, and will provide the foundation for a better system down the road.
