Yes. With direct mode off, there is a slight hiss (detectable when music is not playing.) With direct mode on, silence is dead silence.

Direct mode bypasses all tone controls/equalization, processing, etc. I guess some speakers benefit from some of those things.

See if they will let you put down a deposit and try them at home, in the exact positions where you hope to end up using them. Also, be sure to listen at the exact same loudness (actual SPL at the listening position, not volume setting), and with the exact same material.

I have the standard DVD version. It has been massively restored, but is still nowhere near as good as my DVD player is capable of. Let's face it, there is only so much that can be done with such old film, so I don't see why getting it in hi def would be an improvement.

I have never really understood the concept behind separates. Why should a preamp and power amp in separate chassis sound better (or even different) than the same electronics combined into an integrated or receiver?:confused:

I use direct mode exclusively, because it minimizes the amount of circuitry that the signal has to pass through. This probably influences my choice of speakers.

There is an unavoidable tradeoff between size, efficiency, and bass. Small, high-efficiency speakers will have almost no bass. (Of course, you could always add the Sonic MiniMaxx sub for $89.) Really, though, you might not need high efficiency speakers for that amp at such a short listening...

I find that most room acoustic issues are greatly reduced (if not eliminated) by keeping the speakers well away from all room boundaries. I have my Mirage Omni 150s on stands 2' from the side walls and 7' from the wall behind them. The sound is crystal clear.

Circuit City and Best Buy were closed on Thanksgiving day, but they had sale prices on line. Not as massive as the sale prices the day after, though. (The Panasonic TV that I want is regular-priced $900 at BB, so I am hoping it may go as low as $600-$700.:))

Since there is no active steering applied to the extra speakers, it is by no stretch of the imagination "like 9.1" This is equivalent to using four speakers with a stereo receiver and saying it is "like surround".:rolleyes:
