The deepest bass from a bookshelf?

The only ting that I find attractive about (good) bookshelves is the ability to produce impressive sound from small enclosures. Adding a sub completely defeats the purpose (might as well get towers as do that.) It is only what they can do on their own that is at all relevant. (Speaking of...

Why do you care? (As with most threads, the original question was answered within the first page. The rest is just open-ended discussion.)

I switched back to the Mirages after spending a couple of days with the Def Techs, and that experience has given me a new appreciation of their sound. The only thing that the much larger and more expensive Def Techs do better is bass extension, and in my room that causes enough issues to...

The deepest bass from a bookshelf?

Yeah, I was very suspicious about that. I like Def Tech, but their bass claims do tend to be pretty exaggerated. Also, when there are much more expensive bookshelves that don't approach 20Hz, how can theirs? (Note: My question was more a matter of curiosity than anything. I might...

The deepest bass from a bookshelf?

What is the deepest bass (lowest -3dB point) of any bookshelf speaker, regardless of price, and what speaker is it? The Wilson Duette does 36Hz and the Magico Mini 40Hz (I think those are the most expensive.)

The 315BEE and 515BEE are gorgeous, high-performance, and affordable. I have considered getting those as my next upgrade and worrying about speakers later, except that I love the idea of a whole new system all at once.:D (I also wonder how long it would take between getting those and hankering...

Once again: what are you listening to now?

I tried one Mars Volta CD and didn't care for it. Not inclined to try another.

    Athena LS

Athena no longer exists. The low prices are because of a clearance sale. I haven't heard the LS series, but the Auditions were great for the price.

I have intentionally done away with shelves. Matched components stacked directly on the floor are much more attractive, in a minimalist kind of way. (I am an artist, thus very picky about aesthetics.)

    Entry Level Sound System

My intuition was partially right. The Onkyo did tame the bass beast somewhat, but I am not sure yet if it is sufficient. They can still be a bit overwhelming.

What companies are related? Just curious...

That is most unfortunate. Athena sold great speakers at very affordable prices. I considered selling my F1s, but now I will keep them, as they are destined to be considered classics.

What is a "professional" CD player?

It was while looking at powered monitors that I ran across the pro CDPs. A super-simple system I have been considering is powered monitors connected directly to a CDP, using the monitor's gain controls to adjust volume. Would the balanced connectors be better for this?

Which Speaker Brand Would you Like to See the Audioholics Store Add Immediately?

Exact opposite here. All the Def Techs I have heard sound fantastic, and except for the Heritage line (eg Heresy), all the Klipsch's I have heard sound bright, harsh, and grating.

I have always had a lot of respect for Boston Acoustics. Never heard of D&M.

    Best receiver for Synergy series?

It is those speakers that sound harsh and bright. The receiver is not to blame.

    Why tower mains?

Yes. (In fact, some of us have towers with sufficient bass not to require a sub at all.)

At this point in the discussion, I think we have established that the speakers don't need to match. The only issue with matching electronics is that companies with good integrated amps tend to have overpriced CD players. (Overpriced in the sense that they don't outperform $40 mass-produced DVD...

I am currently listening to the 350s in my stereo. They are great in all areas except bass extension and high-level dynamics. Tonight, I am A/Bing them with my Def Tech BP10Bs (from the HT) which are excellent in both of those areas. The "winner" will remain in the stereo and the other pair will...

    receiver upgrade

What are you upgrading from? Is it more features you are after? If not, you may be disappointed (not much difference in sound quality between receivers these days, and more power is only a benefit in the unlikely event that you are using all the power you have now.)
