Once again: what are you listening to now?

I just bought the new Kinks 2CD+DVD boxed set. Oustanding sound (though they messed up the labels!)

    One brand system

The truth is that I only start dreaming of a new system when I am at work. When I am at home and listening to my current system, it sounds so awesome that all thoughts of replacing or upgrading it vanish. (Not too shabby for $900 MSRP, $500 actual price!)

Nope. Not unless they make them.:D

Cambridge is one of the brands I have looked at for a nice looking matched CD player/integrated amp set. Their specs are not nearly as good as the similarly-priced NAD units, however (of course, specs are not sound.)

    One brand system

Another system I have considered is a pair of powered 8" studio monitors connected directly to a CD player (I never adjust volume once I have it set where I like it.) The simplicity of this appeals to me, and the sound can be excellent.

    Entry Level Sound System

...says a guy who owns a Rotel CD player and likes to show it off!:D

No, I don't. My current system has 14 watts/ch into 8 ohms (increasing to a whopping 20 watts at 4 ohms) and is more than enough in my room. (At 89 dB, my present speakers are not particularly efficient, either.)

    Entry Level Sound System

A $3000 system that I have been considering for myself is a Rotel CD player and integrated amp ($700 each) and B&W 683s ($1500/pr.) I think one would have to spend a lot more to do better than that.

    creating 'wall of sound'

I agree with the above posts. A single pair of speakers with good imaging will effectively create the impression of a "wall of sound" on their own. Conversely, a bunch of mismatched speakers will interfere with each other and create nothing but a muddled mess.

Tradeff: size vs PQ. Would you do it?

That is exactly the sort of dialog that goes on in my head.

Tradeff: size vs PQ. Would you do it?

Here is my dilemma: My 34" widescreen tube has fan-freakin-tastic picture quality, easily the best I have ever seen outside of the top Sony tube TVs. It is, however, only 34" and I would enjoy a bigger screen. Since I sit about 5' away, 42" is about the maximum size, and I will be able to afford...

What is a "professional" CD player?

Musician's stores (eg zzounds) sell "professional" CD players. How are these different from regular CD players?

Actually, the Rotel CD player + integrated amp combo ("the" not "a" because AFAIK they only make one of each) with B&W 683s is one of the systems I have considered, and the basis of my $3K price point.

No, they don't make a CD player.:(

Loudspeaker Magnets and CRT TV Tubes

Most of the speakers I have looked at (both in stores and online) list magnetic shielding as a feature. It is very common.

Given a pair of B&W 703's, what to do with them?

Simultaneous posts. Great minds think alike.:)

What HT and Audio Mags to you subscribe to?

Never subscribed to any of them. I buy HiFi news and/or What HiFi off the shelf sometimes, but purely for entertainment value. (They must obviously be taken with a grain of salt, since they actually review cables and stands!)

Given a pair of B&W 703's, what to do with them?

Sell the Bose on ebay and use the money to buy a receiver. Listen in 2.0 mode until you can afford to add more speakers. (You might just decide you like it enough not to bother. Two good speakers sound vastly better than any number of Bose speakers.)

Loudspeaker Magnets and CRT TV Tubes

True. This creates a dilemma because I currently own one of the largest tubes. I would enjoy a bigger screen, but the advantage might be cancelled by the significant drop in quality from going to another technology.:(

Loudspeaker Magnets and CRT TV Tubes

The vast majority of today's speakers are magnetically shielded. Check the manual or website for the ones you have.
