Problem With Blu-ray player through receiver

Suddenly my blu-ray player will not work when connected via HDMI through any HDMI port on my Yamaha RX-A1020 AVR. I see a 'no signal' error on the TV screen. When I plug the blu-ray player directly into any of the TV HDMI port no problem! (just can't get sound thru the AVR, have to use TV...

Frank Capra's "Lost Horizon" 4K Restoration

I have been 'upgrading' some titles in my movie collection, and recently got the 1937 film on blu-ray "Lost Horizon". The case says "Fully Restored & Mastered in 4K", but the fine print seems to say it's 1080P HD (High Definition), this seems a contradiction, is 4K the same as 1080P HD? I've got...

    DVD or Player Problem?

Hi all! I've got a sudden problem and would advice before I buy a replacement unit. I've got a DVD movie which all of a sudden will freeze in the same spot. The player (a Yamaha blu-ray player model BD-S477, now discontinued) would not even respond until I pull the power cord from the socket...

    Video-Shielded Speakers

Reading the specs on most speakers mention "Video-Shielded - NO" . My assumption is today's flat panel LCD, LED, etc. TV's are not affected by unshielded speakers. However, turntables do seem to be affected. I'm wondering why not offer a shielded speaker to use in a system that includes a...

Why Does YPAO Set Front & Rear Speakers Large?

Is it the way Yamaha wrote the software? When I run YPAO on my 5 year old RX-A1020 it sets the front and rear surround speakers to Large, side surround to Small, and Center channel to Small. Subs it sets cross over to 150Hz. I end up manually setting all speakers to Small and subs at 80Hz...

Why No Big Warehouse-Type AV Stores?

I was just thinking how nice it would be if I could visit a huge store like Fry's or Best Buy which sold ONLY AV gear, every conceivable brand now available from separate sources! One could listen to Salk speakers hooked to a Anthem receiver, etc. Of course the logistics of switching all those...

    Subwoofers For Small Area

My room is approx. 23 feet long, 15 feet wide, with 9 ft. ceiling. However, I have this space partitioned off with a 6 foot tall by 9.5 foot wide collection of bookcases and racks. This gives me separate living / sleeping areas. The 'living' area contains the sofa, AVR gear and 7.2 surround...

Cambridge Audio Minx vs. Definitive Technology Studio Monitors

Currently using 4 Cambridge Audio Minx Min 10's as side and rear surrounds. I have a pair of DefTech Studio Monitor 45's, and a pair of SM 55's. Thinking of using those in place of the Cambridges. Any benefit?

Almost Imperceptible Hum From Cassette Deck

I've got a new (1 month old) Marantz Professional model PMD 300CP cassette deck with USB. A few days ago I started hearing a faint, almost imperceptible hum when the unit is powered off. To try to isolate the problem I disconnected the RCA cable, still hums. Plugged it in different power...

    Standards In Design

In home audio you can connect a speaker to the receiver with a banana plug. In automotive connections all I have seen is connecting the speaker to the receiver (head unit) with those spade terminals. Why isn't there a standard way? Most cars have the gas pedal, brake pedal, basic controls, in...

Trying To Understand REW and Mini DSP

What Will Mini DSP Do That Audyssey or YPAO Does not? So mini DSP will be a permanent addition to my AVR, plugged in between the subwoofers and AVR? Then if I change subwoofer locations or get different subs I re-calibrate the mini DSP? Just wondering if it makes a noticeable difference...

    RCA Caps: More Audio Snakeoil?

https://www.turntablelab.com/products/audioquest-rca-noise-stopper-caps-10-pack Wow, cover up those unused RCA inputs and increase the soundstage and improve clarity! Car Audio: 2-ohm vs. 4-ohm speakers

My car came with a basic no frills generic junk audio system, the head unit is probably under 20 watts power, more like under 15. One of the two rear deck speakers started sounding scratchy so I decided to replace them both. Without much thought I bought a pair of Rockford-Fosgate Punch (4-ohm)...

    different speaker gauges for surround

My front L/R speaker cables are 14 awg. I don't have enough left over for all 4 surround speakers so I'm thinking of using 14 awg for the 2 L/R surrounds and 12 awg for the 2 rears. Any problems with that idea, sonic or otherwise? Thanks for any feedback. I'm even toying with buying them already...

Center Channel Speaker: Above or Below?

As long as the center channel speaker is aimed toward the ears, is there any difference in placing the speaker above or below the TV? Currently mine is on a small shelf on top of TV, I'm thinking of placing it directly below the TV aimed up.

    Furniture In The AV Room

I'm trying to declutter my apartment, in the near future will get rid of this wood coffee table (50" wide, 26" deep, 16" high) with a smaller round one, maybe glass or metal top, will that present acoustic problems?
