I have the Mirage Prestige S8 (same sub as the Energy version) and it's a good sub for that price. Very nice looking too. It may not have near as good a driver as the CSS Trio 8" Wmax suggested... but it's a well built (quality cabinet) small sub with very clean output.

For 99 bucks, that may be the way to go.

The Energy sub at costco is the ESW-8HG. It's the same as the former entry level ESW-8 that came in black ash. It's a decent sub for $100, but the cabinet is cheap particle board, the gloss is a laminate (not laquer), and it's Energy's entry level driver.

I owned the EWS-8 and tSC ASW-8, which appeared to be a direct clone of the Energy, for a short time... Not bad, but sort of soft sounding - not alot of punch.

I feel the Mirage Prestige S8 (or Energy ESW-V8) is well worth double the price... it's a big step up in quality/performance. And it's still inexpensive.

Really, it all comes down to budget and what you want to get out of it.

The Velodyne Impact Mini was available for $200 from several authorized retailers at one point, so if you look into one of those... I'd haggle with the dealer and try to get the price down.

Another Velo option is the VMS-8, which a Velo rep at AVS confirmed is the same (earlier version) as the MiniVee. There is a good price on it from Hi Def Lifestyle through Amazon...although it's a bit above your budget.

I am now using a VMS-8 for my PC audio setup, and I'm very pleased with it. Again, maybe not the performance I could've gotten by going DIY, especially in overall output... but it's a tight sounding, small sealed sub that works perfect for my application. As to the SQ, it handles double bass very well, which was a requirement for my musical preferences.

They don't have them at the Costco here.

Costco has a small 8" sub on display for $99.00 I think it was an Energy, though not 100% sure.

Saw it on display near me the other day. I'm pretty sure they all carry some of the same stuff. Cheap enough to get two.

I guess PD is not that interested in the highest fidelity sound here. None of these subs discussed will have drivers anywhere near as good as the TRIO 8 driver. With the Dawg Crusher and being used to that, I would have thought 2nd or 3rd rate subs just would not do just to save a little elbow work (cutting 2 holes - or just installing a port if doing the Dayton sub driver and port change option).....

I was interested but then the link for the driver didn't work and I lost interest plus I didn't understand where the 3" tube went or even what a 3" tube is.

You can easily pull me back in. The sub that is completed from PE is too big but the other one should work.

Knock out some detail and I will see if lsiberian will come and cut the holes in the box for me.

And I think the VMS-8 for $50 more than the Impact Mini is an easy pic. If you could still get the Impact Mini for $200...maybe...but I still went for the VMS-8...

I don't have much hope for it. The 1500 dollar twin 8" B&W PV1 hits 25Hz at 86dB, with around 80% THD. At 40Hz, it can do 95dB at 20% THD.

I am going to guess the much lower priced single driver 8" sub from them is going to have not better performance.

On the other hand, even my eco option mini 8" sub using the stock Dayton amp and cab with a new port, would easily do 100+ dB, 46Hz on up, (around 96dB at 40Hz, estimated from port limitations) with less than 20-30% THD at the lowest frequency. Or the more costly option using the larger amp and 1 cubic foot cab, could do 104-106dB, 37Hz on up. The driver I recommended is far superior, not slightly superior.
