I think white might be better too! I went back and did some research and it looks like most like the white screen unless they feel the black level isn't good enough.
I'm lucky you showed me the math first however.

It may not be motorized, but it will be out of the way....

If I go this route I could also make some home made drapes for the sides for masking......

My brain is really starting to bubble.

This I could *just fit* based on my test measurements if I can find an extra inch in hight with no room lay out modifications

That place has so many different screens at awesome prices, huh?:D

And if Audioholics says that their $300 screen has very good build-quality, I can live with that.:D

I think the fixed-frame black velvet screens look the best too. They are harder to install because they are bigger than the motorized screens, but they do look the best.

Now before you actually buy from them, I would talk to a customer service rep and ask specifically about how they rolled up those screens!

Case in point: I recently bought an Optoma fixed-frame screen and the rollup job was pathetic! See, when you roll up a screen perfectly, you don't get lines on the screen. Take a piece of paper, for example. If you roll it up smoothly, then unroll it, you don't see any lines at all. But if you roll up the paper, bend the paper, and form a slight edge on the roll, you get some serious LINES!

The rollup and protection of the screen is extremely important when it comes to a fixed-frame.

With a motorized or manual screen, the screen is already made to be rolled up and protected inside that metal casing. But it's a different story with fixed-frame screens.

Well, after 2 BAD Fixed-frame screens, Optoma sent me a motorized screen that was good.

What a relief that was!:D

What a nightmare!

I'm sorry you went through that. I really hope I don't have similar issues.

Sample Pics Lights On/ Lights Off

On the HD81-LV, all the settings (contrast, brightness, color, gamma, sharpness) ranges from 0 - 20. So a 50% setting would be a 10. A 100% setting would be a 20.

All pics w/ Contrast = 10, Brightness = 3, Color = 2, Gamma = 2, Sharpness = 0.

Lights On = Three 60-watts light bulbs.

really really cool.

**PJ search update**

I spend about 4 hours reading on boards AVS and others. I have come up with 1 concern and a billion confirmations that the 1080UB is for me.

I keep reading about the 1080UB, and the highlights for it are really speaking directly to me. The better blacks, and the great sharpness, and more lumens than many in the range are really what I am looking for. It's often compaired side by side to the JVC top of the line, and for the price I can't see myself being made much happier.

Onto my concern... I understand how the iris system works, but isn't that just sopmething else to go wrong, or break on it? More moving parts makes me nervous, any thoughts or comments? I myself can't find a report of it going bad really.

Actually, a lot of people, including MYSELF, turn OFF the IRIS completely!:D

I don't even mess with. Don't miss it. Don't use it. Problem solved.:D

My blacks are extremely clean black and my whites are extremely clean white with the Iris OFF.

Yeah, if I didn't go with the Optoma HD81-LV, I would also go for the Epson 1080UB.

how did optoma earn your dollars?
1. Price Paid
2. Brightness
3. Picture Quality

I paid $3,320. The price on the Optoma HD81-LV is $6,000. A friend of mine had to jump through A LOT of hoops and pulled A LOT of strings to get me a brand new one for that low price.

The HD81-LV has no rivals when it comes to brightness for 1080p projectors costing $10,000 or less.

And the Picture Quality is about as good as any projectors in this price class.

Are you serious? Honest question. Are you sure its not the lowest end RS series, namely RS-1u or RS-1x? I've got the RS-1u, 15k:1 on/off. The RS-2 has 30k:1. Both as native. I heard a rumor that the anticipated RS-3 may have 80k:1 ANSI !?! That can't be right. Isn't the best ANSI ever the Pioneer Kuro at around 3k:1??

The RS-1 is actually brighter than the RS-2. The latter gives up brightness to improve blacks even further, with better color saturation. JVC, unlike most other companies, actually spec their lumens rather accurately. So, when compared to a 1200 lumen PJ of a different brand, they might actually be identical, or its even possible the JVC is brighter.

The biggest benefit I see to having a light cannon would be the better implemention of an AT screen in the future. Seeing as I fit 8 viewers with a retro-reflective screen, I'm not so sure how important it is to have angular reflective for multiple viewers. However, AT is where its at, or at least I imagine.

You could catch a sweet deal on an RS-1 or RS-2 because owners are going to be dumping them for the new RS20 and RS10.

http://www.projectorreviews.com/epson/powerlite-home-cinema-1080ub/imagequality.php

"If I replaced my JVC RS1, with the Epson Home Cinema 1080UB, I'd hardly notice, if at all during normal viewing, only if I was "watching my equipment" instead of enjoying the content. That's saying a lot!"

"In fact, after adjustments, I found it's skin tone handling to be almost identical to my JVC RS1."

"I am not going to claim that the Home Cinema 1080UB matches the RS1 (Black Level), let alone the RS2. But, I must emphasize, that it comes extremely close to the RS1."

"In reality, the Epson HC1080UB (Shadow Details), rivals the older and newer more expensive Sony LCoS projectors, and isn't that far behind the JVC RS1."

"It (1080UB's Sharpness) does have a slight, visible advantage over ...the JVC RS2."

"Since the Epson is close on black levels and equally close in shadow detail (to the RS-1), both projectors produce striking, better than you are likely to ever see in a movie theater, picture quality. "

"By the time you kick it into its brightest mode - Dynamic, it is brighter than all but a couple of under $10,000 projectors, most notably the exceptionally bright Optoma HD81-LV."

"Dynamic: 1527 lumens (after some adjustments to "tame" the colors a bit to make everything look more natural)"

In other words, if you increase that CONTRAST setting, you could get some awesome bright picture.

I never liked the "BEST MODE" calibration. To me, the black colors are not black enough here. I prefer to crank that contrast up a bit - like on my computer monitor. I prefer that VIVID colorful picture.

You are good. That was probably the most sparkling review. I think I found another on AVS.

People always describe the JVC as being an "edge" or a "hair" better all around. Also using the term "more film like"

In absolute terms, the JVC RS-1 & RS-2 are better than the Epson. But they are a lot more expensive than the Epson 1080UB.

In practical terms, it appears that they (JVC & Epson) are more alike than they differ in terms of overall performance.

For around $2K, I just don't see a more practical "Best Buy" than the Epson 1080UB. The only question is which screen will you buy?

Motorized screen: waves on screen.

Even with my brand new motorized screen (MSRP $700), I can still see minor waves. They don't show up when watching a movie, but they are present.

Tension Motorized screen: no waves/less waves, but more expensive.

Fixed-Frame: risk of vertical/horizontal lines unless higher build quality and more difficult to install.

If I were to buy a new screen (future buy), I would buy a fixed-frame. Since Audioholics liked the quality of FocuPix motorized (nontension) screen, I would give FocuPix a try because the prices seem awesome.

I actually called FocuPix and talked to a tech there. I told them about my experience with TWO bad Optoma fixed-frame screens having permanent lines due to improper rollup/protection. I asked them about their fixed-frame screens and how well the rollup/protection is. I told them I was concerned that the Focupix screens are inexpensive & wondered about quality.

The tech assured me about their quality. He said their store is also a factory/manufacturer. They make their own screens there. They do the business (telephone, customer service, tech support, etc.) right there in the factory. That is the reason for the low price.

Acudef are you sitting there scanning my brain with some Xmen type brain wave reader?

I am planning on the focupix 100"(maybe bigger. Need to measure) fixed 2.35.

I can't see anything stopping me from getting the epson. It's high enough quality to make me happy, and relatively inexpensive enough that I wouldn't mind upgrading when we expand for a theater room on this house or move out etc.

What amazes me about both of these products is no one has anything BAD to say. Nothing definitive that they wish was done differently. I can't find a solid negative comment really. Maybe that the 1080ub does not play nice with anamorphic lenses. That isn't an issue for me since I will just use the zoom method.

I'm going on vacation tonight, but when I get back I think the visa will come out to play. The only thing stopping me now is how to get rid of my 2nd full size snooker table! :p I wish I liked billiards the 2 tables I inherrited with the house are amazing, but for me, it's just in the way. I nearly cried demolishing the antique tables slate!

Sounds like you are heading in the right direction!:D

Definitely let us know when you do get all the equipements together.

Then head on over to the Amp/Receiver/Pre-Pro section for that receiver discussion, which is probably the most popular section.

And then maybe Speakers section too.:D
