I've gone HD!

Superbowl is looming and with it comes my neighborhood TV contest. For those that don't know, our good friends in my 'hood (which is actually a lot, 25-30 people) get together for Superbowl and we do a TV raffle. Their mainly my Dads friends, and some of mine that are older and considered okay to play. Everyone that wishes to attend buys a ticket for a TV draw. The ticket is 50 dollars, and you can buy 2 for $75 (nothing higher). All the money is pooled and using it we buy a TV to raffle off at the end of the game.

When we first started TVs were still expensive, and the first TV was a 32inch non flat CRT  Last year we had a 37inch LCD and before that an 80inch non HD projector + screen.

This year, we have a 42inch Philips LCD, which brings me full circle. Because Superbowl is more then a month away, and my house is where the festivities occur, I get to live with and use the TV until that day. I bought a new DVD player and HDMI cable to go with it, because SD on a 1080i capable TV is blasphemy as far as I'm concerned.

The DVD player is a Samsung Up-converting model capable of 1080P. The HDMI cable is a cheap one from a local computer Store (NCIX). Both were less then $150.
The TV in it's current (and hopfully future) home.

DVD player in it's new home.

A screen shot of Ratatouille in 1080i.

nice new TV! it's time to jump into the HDDVD/BD bandwagon!
HDDVD and BluRay are not that cheap in canada. look at www.futureshop.ca for the "best" prices we have. There is no 99$ players around and amazon.com won't ship electronics except for discs (CDs, DVDs, etc).

my uncle in Canada uses a PS3 to play BD's ... I don't know about the player, but the discs are about 20-25% more expensive than the US prices.

believe me, you can't have prices more expensive than where I am :D

HD discs cost 40 bucks ... HD DVD players cost 600 and up ... only the PS3 is fairly cheap: less than 500

Hey, that's a nice looking pic! Hopefully you'll get to KEEP the TV or buy it off from someone.

I also only got to see the pug in the pics now. Must act as a great diffuser :D

It's the only diffuser that actually GIVES OFF sound. It snores when it's awake and sleeping. :D

If someone put that TV in my room it would NOT leave. :D

Raffle Schmaffle. I'd ensure victory by cheating.

Maybe I am the only one that noticed or the rest of you are too polite to ask but what is all that diagonal banding???

I'm pretty sure it's a camera related issue. Like the scan lines when you film a monitor.

I thought you were going to educate yourself regarding camera's?

I guess I just have never seen diagonal banding like this. I am more accustomed to seeing vertical banding from cameras.

I learned something new today!

There are some who argue that evolution is more relevant than revolution; that being said your current iteration looks fantastic and quite a bit more comfortable (by no small measure) than my own. This of course takes nothing away from its certain capability. Love the pug! Every HT needs a guardian (in light of my current "psycho" >just kidding honey!< girlfriend this issue seems particularly topical ). Cheers!

100% agree, once it comes here, IT STAYS.

So fellows, word of advice, never have a 'get together' with me.:p

Sheep,
Looking MUCH better. That room (now that it can be seen), looks very easy to pressurize.;)

It is, lots of rattles though. I have a crappy 12inch car subwoofer that I'm going to stick in a box and power with an old plate amp. Should be built in a few days.

Well, quite honestly -- laying low. I have been biding my time trying not to upgrade my HT. Browsing Audioholics, however innocently tends to propel me towards making purchases .
There, I said it. Audioholics is like crack.
In fact, my new swag is sitting downstairs in their shipping containers. Will post details and pics soon! Good to be back! Happy New Year!
