I liked my first impression of the Tesla Model Y the other week. Since then I've learned some things that argue strongly against buying one:
  • Telsa sells two very expensive options:
    • Enhanced Autopilot for $6,000 (includes navigate on autopilot, auto lane change, auto park, summon, & smart summon). I'm not interested.
    • Full Self-Driving Capability for $15,000 (includes all of basic & enhanced autopilot functions, plus traffic light & stop sign control, and coming soon, auto steer on city streets).
    • I've recently learned that Tesla makes it difficult to order a car without the $15,000 Full Self-Driving option. You can order a car without it, but the delivery times will be many months longer
  • I used to think Elon Musk is a flake. Now, since he bought Twitter, I know different. He's no better than Trump & his followers.
.
I guess that makes him a Muskrat ..........

I don't think I'll be spending any money for a Tesla. Back to square one :(.
Tesla is being investigated for autopilot by the NHTSA still.

I guess I was aware of that, but had forgotten the details. Thanks for reminding me of a very good reason why I don't want a 'self-crashing' car.

I tried envisioning auto pilot in Boston. It made me white knuckle my office chair. But on the right amount of drugs, maybe.

I wonder how many injuries and deaths could have been prevented if Musk had called the feature Assisted Driving instead of Autopilot to begin with.

I have always said "Auto"pilot will only be good enough for me when it can drive in India  ;) I am not sure *I* would want to drive in the business districts in India lol.

Have you ever driven a car in Boston? I've never driven in India, but I wonder how anything can be worse that driving in Boston.

Elon Musk recently has been busy denying that he is involved in any way with porn. Apparently, there is a video showing what a clever couple can do while riding in a Tesla on autopilot.

I'm all for self driving cars. Especially if you can black out the windows.

I live in the SF Bay Area and I have driven in LA traffic too. India is on a whole different level.

Have you ever seen a video of driving conditions in India? It's just an insane total free for all. Gives me anxiety thinking about it.

I worked with a Frenchman who lived in Paris for a year. Behind the wheel, he was a terror but oddly enough would yell out at other drivers, "Use your blink-ah" !!! He spoke of Parisians as not giving an inch in traffic. I believe he admired the drivers for being colossal pricks.

Yup. Imagine your worst traffic. Then add 50% additional on top of that of small motorcycles. They manage it though, but a car with some AI? Hahahahhahaha Good luck with that.

I could imagine the car just stopping like "I give up!"

Some fifty years ago, in the early 70s, I was in southern Italy for nearly 1½ years. I drove a car most of that time. I was far from any big city like Rome or Naples, but I was still terrified of driving there. The small towns were very crowded with very narrow streets, and drivers who raced around as if they all had a death wish.

It took me about half a year before I learned there was a method to their madness. The unspoken 'rules of the road' in Italy were quite different from anything I knew from driving in the USA. Once I finally got all that, I gained some respect for Italian drivers and lost most of my fear & loathing of driving there. But it took me half a year of terror before I got there. When I first returned home, I experienced the same terror that I had felt early on in Italy, while driving among American drivers.

I don't think a short visit to Paris, Bombay, or even Boston, is nearly enough time for anyone to unlearn his USA driving habits and start to understand completely different rules of the road.

One of my best friends is from New Delhi and he summed it up as "in the US you have to watch out for cars. If you're in the city, people on crosswalks and bikes. In India, you have to watch for people walking in traffic, bikes, chickens, cows, and anything else that could possibly be in the street. There are no rules. Well, not any that anyone follows."
