That's It! I'm done with connecting flights! [Rant]

Rant time:
So we flew from Newark (EWR) to Spokane (SEA) (with a layover in Seattle) with a family of four, including my two little boys (under 12yo both). No issues on the way there.
On the way back, the plane from Spokane to Seattle got delayed by 1:40h due to "maintenance" - so what's the big deal? Well, this is the point where this little trip goes to hell.
You see, the issue is my flight from SEA to EWR had a 1:30h layover, and the incoming flight is late due to airline issues.
The issue is that airlines (in this case, Alaska Airlines) can hold the flight for millions of reasons, but your being unable to make the connecting flight due to their own fault isn't one of these reasons.

So our hell beings.

First of all - a 3-hour-long wait line to Alaska guest hostage services misservices. After I finally spoke with an agent, they cheerfully mentioned (it's at about 2 am by then) to me the next flight is in TWO days (Tuesday) at 7 am, and their provided hotels are broken/full/non-functioning, and I'm to find and book my own and get reimbursed later. So here I'm in the airport in Seattle at 2 am trying to book a hotel for 4 people. A hotel was eventually found, but at 2 am most hotels don't run shuttles. So UBER time it is.
So after spending two nights in a hotel so far out of 3 nights in Seattle, 2 of them were pretty sucky, as I had to wake up kids by 4 am due to a flight at 7:00 am.
Getting to the SEA airport, waiting for a flight delayed until 1 pm, the flight gets canceled due to storms in NJ.

Now Alaska guest hostage services misservices books me on a United flight later in the same afternoon, and guess what - it also gets canceled, but luckily due to mechanical issues. You see, if the flight gets canceled due to weather, you don't get a hotel on the airline, but plane issues - you do. So now I'm with two delayed and canceled flights. So now United guest hostage services misservices after only 2 hours on hold and nearly 1 hour of phone calls gets a link to hotel booking and $120 worth of food vouchers. So we stay overnight in another hotel in Seattle. The next day, after breakfast, we go back to the airport and finally fly !!! .... to San Francisco ?? Yes, to SF, because why not have another 3 hours (which turned into 7 hours) layover in SF airport??

Finally, after 4 days of this hell, yesterday at 7 pm local time we took off back home to NJ, and landed in EWR at local time around 4 am.

Finally, we're all done? Well, not fully - you see the checked-in bag, which we gave to Alaska in Seattle, didn't made with us to EWR, but decided to stay in SEA despite the Alaska airline baggage claims misservices representative. So now we are speaking after another pleasant 40-minute hold time call with Alaska to send our luggage with nearly $2k worth of stuff back to us. That part is just started. Will update later on this adventure"

Shout out to Alan, the shuttle driver at the Hampton Inn Seattle/Southcenter - you're the superstar, and we feel bad we missed you in the morning

Been on trips like that. Sucks when it happens. Sometimes it turns into food exploration at whatever airport or city I am stuck in, but it still sucks.

Seriously, I have no life.
Hopefully they will not delay your refund for expenses.

When I had to I used to use particular carriers/transit points to keep my discount I avoided when possible any hubs/connecting flights and went direct whenever possible (we were IATA cargo agents). These days the airlines are worse than shitty buses.

after 4 days of this hell
It's only a 3 day drive ...

It's been about 15 years since I got on a plane. It was awful. A baby on a small plane sh!t itself stinking up the whole cabin. F^%&ing hilarious. I don't know what they had been feeding the baby but it was too young for burritos.

Last time I went to India, I went on ANA to Singapore. That was probably the nicest flight I've had. Awesome food, good entertainment system, things worked... From there I had to take Air India for the second leg. Uh, a little bit of a change. It literally felt like riding the subway lol. But I got there.

And this is why I drove from NJ to FL last month - 13h drive, excluding stops, still beats this hell.

I know someone who was scheduled to play a gig in New York and he was bringing guitars. He has lost instruments before, but needs to fly. The gig was early evening, he received notification of delays and never made it- the best they could do was next morning. I don't think a refund is really adequate and I doubt he was paid for the gig.

I would go on more road trips, but in order to go South of WI, I have to go through Illinois and I effing hate that state.

Agreed, I flew ANA from Taipei to SF, wonderful. I was told they were amazing, but my initial expectations weren't that high. Was I wrong.

After ANA I really like JAL. With a @BoredSysAdmin type story I don't want to recall, I was finally booked on them from Tokyo (Haneda) to Manila. A super flight.

It's a shock getting on a "normal" plane after flying with these carriers.

Hubs/connecting flights were part of my reason to avoid commercial flying when possible. I used to get IATA discounts for my business travel, and that sometimes meant some cruel layovers depending what carriers I applied to, and for the discount was okay. For regular fare-paying, meh.

:) From IATA's Wiki page:
"The International Air Transport Association (IATA /aɪˈɑːtə/ eye-AH-tuh) is an airline trade association founded in 1945.[5] IATA has been described as a cartel since, in addition to setting technical standards for airlines, it has also organized tariff conferences that served as a forum for price fixing.[6][7] "

Here are a few "fun" updates and a conclusion to this misadventure.
1. The missing checked-in luggage. TLDR it was delivered to us last Thursday, August 6th, only 15 days after we landed. All items were inside as expected.
Long story. As you might recollect, our original flight was with Alaska Airlines, and we checked our luggage with Alaska in Seattle, and this is where I went first to search for the luggage. Turns out it was for naught; apparently THEY INDEED passed our luggage to United, but somehow to the wrong flight. The first time I found out about it was exactly on Tuesday, July 28th, at 10 pm I didn't pick up my phone and instead got this lovely voice message:

"Hi. Good evening. This call is for [Redacted]. This is United baggage service here at Newark Airport. We have a bag that belongs to you here at the BSO office since July 24th. You have to pick it up by tomorrow, July 29th. If you do not claim your back well have to send it back for storage in Houston. IF you have any questions, call 8003352247. Thank you "

There are 3 important details here that you should know:
a) Here in NJ, on July 28, there is a strong thunderstorm and cats-and-dogs rain, especially late in the evening.
b) I landed on July 23rd, but somehow my bag landed a day later, on the 24th? And It was this whole time with United?? I had no idea until that point.
c) The VM specifically said to pick up the bag by tomorrow and gave me a date.

I asked my better half: should I go now (after 10 pm) for about 1h drive to Newark, or the next day? She reasonably advised me to wait for the next day, as I said the weather sucked.

So the next morning at 10:00 am I showed up in Newark at the United baggage office in Terminal C, only to find out that United had already shipped my bag to Houston for storage!!!! MOFOS!!!
Then another 2-3h calls trying to fight their outrageously terrible IVR system (press 1 if you speak Latin, etc) I finally put in a request to have my luggage delivered. Luckily, I caught a call from a Houston United luggage clerk to confirm my details on Saturday, August 1st at midday, and, as I said, it was delivered by FedEx on August 6th.

2. The Damaged Luggage - I might have mentioned (or not) that the checked luggage was damaged by Alaska during the first part of the trip - the flight from Newark to Spokane. I submitted the claim with the Alaska baggage agent in Spokane as soon as I got off the flight. Submitted one more pointless internet form and replied to an email with photos of the damaged luggage - the carrying handle was ripped off, and the casing around it was also ripped off. Luckily, my misery on this didn't extend too long. Alaska sent me a special link to essentially pick a new piece of luggage from a special store hosted by TravelersChoice, with my choices of about 10 different luggage series from them and in a few sizes each. Not too bad. 100% free, including shipping. About $200 value here. Not too bad. It should be delivered tomorrow,

3. Cost of transport, hotel, and food for the first two days, delayed by Alaska. Luckily, Redded came through here, and someone recommended a general feedback form to get reimbursed for such expenses. It did work, but Alaska refused to pay for tips and taxes, thus reducing my return; most of it was indeed returned. I wish it were a paper check, but instead they sent me a link to some shady payment processor with a lovely note that unless I claim the money in 7 days, I'd lose it.

So, all in all, I haven't lost that much money in this, and all issues eventually got addressed and resolved, but this experience I hope I never have to go through ever again. Nor could I ever get back COUNTLESS hours on the phone with barely speaking English agents.

I was once flying to Peoria Il. Got stuck in Chicago, O'Hare because of a thunderstorm. Took the first flight out in the morning and my luggage was already there. Not exactly sure how they managed that! There wasn't another flight from my origin the bags could have gotten on. Some kind of voodoo magic.....

It could have been a cargo only flight in. These were small planes flying into Peoria.
