Audyssey killing my HT sound?

Well, I would say linear and flat are two different things. I think you can have a non-flat house curve that emphasizes bass but still be considered linear if it's a nice smooth curve. If your curve has a bunch of peaks and dips I would consider it non linear.

I think "linear" usually refers to a FR of +/-3dB. I think anything more than +/-3dB is considered non-linear.

I think we can say something like, "The FR is "linear" or "flat" from 200Hz-10kHz, while being HOT in the bass region from 20Hz-200Hz and tapering down in the treble region 16kHz-20kHz.

You're not wrong. In my head tho, I'm picturing flat as being a horizontal line where linear can be used to describe a horizontal, diagonal or even a vertical line.

Yeah, I can see FLAT being a straight horizontal line - like a EKG FLAT LINE.

But if the vertical or diagonal lines are +/-10dB, is that still "linear"?

That's why I think we need to delineate "Linear" as being no more than +/-3dB.

I would say yes if it is a relatively smooth line without a lot of variance along the way. It is linear, or a straight line from 0 to + 10 dB.

For instance I would say this first chart is closer to flat than the second chart, but it's not as linear. The second chart is not as flat, but is more linear or has less variance from start to finish.

I would call this one both flat AND very linear.

@shadyJ, I know you use both terms quite often in your reviews. What's your take on "flat" vs "linear"? Or do you use them more or less to mean the same thing?

Oh, spent my $110 on the UMIK-1 and spent hours and hours doing REW just to confirm what I ALREADY KNEW - that my system sounded awesome without screwing around with it much.

And now that I have confirmed what I already knew for the past 30 years, the UMIK-1 mic goes back into it's little box forever.

Oh, spent my $110 on the UMIK-1 and spent hours and hours doing REW just to confirm what I ALREADY KNEW - that my system sounded awesome without screwing around with it much.

And now that I have confirmed what I already knew for the past 30 years, the UMIK-1 mic goes back into it's little box forever.

You're never going to buy new speakers, move or replace anything ever again?

Plus you said you didn't screw with it "too much" which suggests it did help you make some improvements, if even minor, no?

Oh I guarantee you could tell the difference in my house. Unquestionably, undoubtedly, absolutely audible and demonstrable difference.

In my experience, either I could NOT tell the difference significantly or the room correction made it sound WORSE.

I could not tell a significant difference with Audyssey, ARC, Dirac, Lyngdorf. But YPAO sounded worse than BYPASS, even though YPAO MEASURED flatter than BYPASS.

I don't do much to my speakers. All the stuff I'm posting is bass. Mainly subwoofers!
