Salient speakers are the main front 3 speakers for sure.

The rest of the speakers aren't as important.

So not an issue if they don't match brands.

Some people do want to match brands for all speakers, though.

Ya I’m likely to be in a mixed situation for a while in the man cave The DT bipoles might not be perfect for Atmos but they should be ok short term.

My favorite speakers for music are my Canton Vento 820.2 bookshelves in my bedroom 2.1.

Ya I’ve mixed the back speakers before. Boston with Polk. Def tech with Boston. Thinking mixing ceilings won’t be an issue but will find out soon.

I think I’ll try the RSL 34E in 5.1.4. All these threads have me excited about Atmos.

You will not be disappointed. I used two of mine as mains in my bedroom and they image like crazy. And if you have a flat ceiling, you have options for aiming the whole speaker. They have aimable tweeters but I’ve never found them to be of any value, and IMO can introduce other issues.

It will be a Frankenstein approach as I haven’t chosen the new base layer speakers. Temporarily will be my Def Tech BP10B PM500 and SR9040.

I’ve had some Frankensteins before. They can work for as long as you need but there’s nothing a cohesive comprehensive system of matching speakers.

That’s a likely route. There is a new slightly larger RSL series coming out in November.

Yep I’ve got a pile of chores to finish for the fall but at least it will be cool enough to go up in the attic space. I’ll need some wiring that is rated for the attic which can get hot. I think if I stay under the insulation with the wires it won’t be quite as hot but it gets hot up there in the summer.

I’ve seen a lot of print over the years where people say only the fronts matter, or surrounds aren’t important etc. While this may be true to a point, I disagree in that a speaker system that has to playback modern soundtracks is much different than an old skool Dolby surround system. The front 3 are the most important, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t buy good speakers for the entire system. Now don’t think I’m saying you need 5 GE triton ones as a bed layer, but there’s no reason to skimp either. At the end of the day though, I understand going in steps. You’ll be fine.

I installed mine in a vaulted ceiling. Had to “spider man” my way around. It gets really skinny down along the outside!!! Lol

I went with 4, I have a 15 wide by 22 deep room with 9 ft ceilings, so not huge, but not small. I also went with (Big Surprise) GoldenEar Invisa 7000 speakers. They are angled which works well in ATMOS because they can be position so that the tweeter is best facing the listening position while adhering to ATMOS positioning. They are not huge, but balance out well with my system.

I had many people tell me I was crazy as an earlier adopter, but ATMOS is very much supported by the movie industry. Bookmark had a pretty solid list of movies that showcase the technology. I would just add the last 2 Star Trek Movies to the list.

Sweet setup. All GE Speakers for the whole house, including ceiling ATMOS speakers. Are the subs in the Triton towers?

Apparently/unfortunately, I can no longer edit/update the 1st post. However I think all, but Pitch Perfect 3 and The Mechanic Resurrection were improved with the 4 Height setup.

Keeping up with their tradition Infinity Wars and Solo were not Atmos/Dts:X and still a bit low on the Volume however the Dynamics seemed improved over other recent efforts. Upmixed with Neural X, I think, possibly still improved them overall.

Here in the UK I believe only the last one, Star Trek Beyond was in Atmos (bluray). I have re-watched it and it is good but then it always sounded pretty impressive. The other two are True HD for me.

They came they saw and wrecked a few Engineers landmarks with a spacecraft.

1:34.54 I can feel that Alien when it jumps up and clings onto the underside of the spacecraft.

Some of the scenes with spacecraft sounds like jet-airliner 1:34.03, 1:36.06. The sound mix is okay. Those spacecraft engines would be deafeningly loud! Yet on the outside against the competition of dialogue its loud and clear.

I must have played chapter 20 for over an hour.

The short hair makes her look like a tomboy. Go and kick some Xenomorph butt.

Yes Andy the lift off scene in Covenant is very nice even if the film has probably finished off the franchise for a while. They should of kept Ridley Scott away and let Neill Blomkamp direct his one.

Desperate for an Atmos fix, I repurchase a couple of oldies. John Wick and Mad Max Fury Road.

I have to say I was bit underwhelmed by John Wick. I had high hopes, it was a cult intro to the series and probably the budget was not enormous by other blockbuster standards, but unlike the 2nd it is in Atmos. I felt even the thunder, rain soaked ending is a tad lacklustre, really not much improved over my original Dolby Dvd. The second outing although only Dts HDMA, up mixed by Neural X was pretty good and a lot more like I had expected of the first.

If Mad Max Fury Road was not already mentioned, I would be giving it my big thumbs up. This is a Atmos demo to annoy the neighbors and show off with.

I see Ridley Scott possibly doing a remake of the classic A L I E N 1979 as the visuals in these prequels don't have the late 70's look with CRT sony monitors they have all this transparent 3d screens and I just sense an unnecessary remake.

Yes, like the Star Wars prequels, it is odd the gear is better in the past.

Ridley along with James Cameron are the sort of directors who should best stay out of the editing room after the film is released. Ridley's additions to Alien, Blade Runner and a Gladiator have not improve any of them, IMO. Similarly Mr Cameron's fiddling with Terminator 2, Aliens 2, Titanic and some other have has not helped.

The only Ridley change I do really like is Kingdom of Heaven. This film had real problems when first released due to length complaints. The extra 45 mins running time makes this film a lot more understandable and sorts out a range of issue including Michael Sheen's part.

I can forgive George most of his changes as these were largely down to fixing the print for the most part. I like the more open Bespin and hate the who shot first. Solo fixes that one.
