The long wait has been painful for sure.

I closed on the house loan in early February 2016. Official completion date is Dec 01, 2016. That's almost 1 freaking year!

3-4 months is the normal build time here. I am going to go take a picture of a house they just started near me and then see how long it takes. I will post the pictures to you so it can enhance your suffering.

For homes in the class ADTG is building (full custom design, custom cabinetry, special carpentry, special-order this and that) a year is not unusual at all. Three or more months is for pattern-design tract homes by big builders.

"Spec homes" usually take 3-4 months to build.

I drive by places that are building new spec houses. One day there's no roof. The next day, there's a roof. One day there's just framing. Next day there's walls. Next day there's bricks. I'm thinking "WTF, why does my house take 20 times longer".

But then I console myself by thinking, most of these Spec homes are 1500SF with 8' ceilings and mostly carpet flooring.

Almost everything about my house is weird or different. Like 20A circuits throughout the house, instead of 15A. Three 20A circuits for theater room.

All porcelain floors for 5400SF + rocks for some walls.

Light switches are Wi-Fi switches.

2 Kitchens, instead of 1.

7 A/C Zone + 7 Wi-Fi Radio Thermostats.

Whole-house Back-up Generator.

The concrete around my house (driveway, sidewalks) is $45,000.

One of the local artists came by the house yesterday to paint our Study Room Dome Ceiling with fancy artwork, instead of just regular paint like most houses.

But still, I was hoping it would be completed by 8 months, not 10-11 months.

Yeah, originally, the land developer told me that it would take about 12 months to build these 5,000+ SF custom houses. And then my builder told me 8 months. I was really happy to hear that. But now it's looking more like 12 months.

1 thing that pisses me off is that the house NEXT to mine is also 5000+ SF and will be done about the same time as my house- and that's after LIGHTNING STRUCK HIS HOUSE and caused FIRE to his ROOF.

FIRE TO HIS ROOF !!!!!!!

And they closed on the house loan 2 weeks AFTER I closed on my loan.

And I think they may even be done BEFORE my house by 1 week.

That being said, when you are not paying much attention to homes being built, you could be way off on how long it takes. That's why I am going to track it.

We actually purchased our's out from under the person that had it built but that's along story. Our wait time was like 3 weeks just to have the floors changed to what we wanted and a few minor things. Keep in mind that this is our downsize house which is less than 1/2 the size we moved from.

There could be a lot of reasons for that, not the least of which could be anomalies in subcontractor scheduling. Or perhaps your builder had to wait longer for something like custom cabinets to arrive. You may never know.

I thought about a lightning system for a brief moment only after I saw what happened to the next door neighbor.

But in the end, we decided it wasn't worth spending $5,000. Fingers crossed.

Yeah, 3 weeks for floors is annoying, but that's the case with my house.

Yesterday, it took the countertop people just 1 day to finish installing all the quartz countertops and sinks. Just 1 full day. If only everyone could be that efficient.

But the floors taking 3+ weeks is just annoying.

Oh, yes, the underground tornado shelter in the BACK of the garage was the FIRST thing that was installed in the construction - before they poured the concrete foundation.

We ended up only ever using it as a microwave. Last week I got to purchase a brand new $3,000 "microwave", 1 year after the 5 year extended warranty expired.

My built-in microwaves are traditional Panasonic microwaves. I bought the Panasonic built-in kits. If anyone breaks my microwaves, I can just simply take out the old ones and replace them with new Panasonic microwaves (new models are released, but the dimensions are exactly the same to fit the built-in kits).

My brother asked me why I didn't get one of those $5,000 built-in refrigerators?
I told him, "Why the heck would I do that? I could buy 5 Refrigerators for that amount!"

I think the most difficult and stressful thing about building a house is disagreement between spouses. It's a good thing my wife hates expensive fancy appliances. But there are plenty of other things we disagree on.

Of course, the wife usually wins - even when she is WRONG.
