One more question about that compression tool. Does it accept any brand of compression terminal? Or do you have get one and only one brand of terminals? On Amazon there are many brands of compression terminals available at a wide variety of prices.
I tried plugging an optical connector in without pulling out the armoire in ManTown and I nearly wept. My knees were screaming. My hands were holding a flashlight, a mirror and the cable while I craned my head over to see through the correct part of my progressive lenses. About 30 seconds of that and I dropped the flaslight onto the other optical connector unplugging it and then finally landing in the nest of loosely fitted HDMI connectors.
After the nightmare I had connecting those 6 cables between my BR player and my pre-HDMI receiver, I bought a telescoping inspection mirror with LED lights in it. Of course, I haven't needed it since getting it, but it's cool. I hope I use it once before the batteries die.

It's one 'type' of fitting made by a couple different outfits. I've bought connectors at my local electronics shop, a big DIY electronics store in Mass, Home Depot and PE. The ones in HD have gold plating. They're pretty. The DIY electronics store has translucent red RG-6. It's a much more vibrant sound than plain black jacketed cable with nickle plated terminations.

:D

Just got back from a week in Florida.

Here are the things we learned.
  1. Traffic in the Orlando area esp. Route 4 suck$
  2. The Express pass is the only way to go to Universal Studios. Just spend the money and don't question.
  3. See #1
  4. New 3D rides can be exceptional (see transformers). Movies $uck but ride does not.
  5. See #1
  6. If you can go to Kennedy space center. Saturn rockets are f%&*ing huge!!

Is that the red cable in the photo? That is much better than black.

Sick ... I mean six things I learned in Fla

  1. When a hooker's name is Marvin ... don't let the dress fool you.
  2. Irish bartenders don't like it when you try to eff their g/f.
  3. Go to the bathroom before night fishing or bring extra socks.
  4. Two tequilas are how fun starts.
  5. Remaining in the ocean during a cloud burst in Lightening Capitol, Planet Earth isn't wise.
  6. Alligators eat small children.

The tool and the stripper were my best purchases ever. I was having trouble figuring out just how much center conductor to strip and then the issue of what to peel off the dielectric and what to leave on was sort of problematic. Finally inserting the cable into the connector is a two part deal. You get the dielectric lined up and started only to stop where the center conductor meets its hole. That's a much tighter shot. You need to stop and poke around until you feel it go past the hard stops and then finish pushing it in until you're (it's killing me not to say balls deep) in to a depth of 1-1/8 to 1-1/4 inches that you had in your infinite wisdom and foresight marked on the cable with masking tape.

Note: When you are trying to insert the center conductor in it's hole, listen. If you miss the hole and collapse the wire on itself, like kink it, you can hear that. Success has a sound and a feel. It's not rocket science but you have to pay attention. Oh yeah, the stripper sometimes wraps a lone copper strand from the braid tightly around the center conductor so glasses and magnifying glasses help.

The Belden rg-59 I scavenged is about 50 bucks for 30 feet. Its95% copper braid is good enough for analog audio. Straight rg-6 with whatever BJC says for foil and braid is best for digital audio and video. Quadshield is a waste of effort and needlessly stiff. What's cool is that the connectors are available at HD.

Initially you lay out some cash but when you need cables you got cables. World class cables. Custom lengths made on site ... we bad. The connectors fit well too. None 'o that death grip sh!t.
The tool and the stripper is the name of a porno I saw once...

Favorite moments of the month:

1. My elder son telling his 1 year old brother "Welcome to fart world" and cutting the cheese. Talk about making a father proud :D

2. We received a new cabinet from Amazon yesterday that requires "a little" (>20 steps) assembly. My wife decided she wanted to get a head start on it at ~9PM, so she goes downstairs and begins assembly before calling me down ~20 minutes later. Apparently, instead of going down to the basement to get actual tools, she decided to utilize a little key chain screwdriver. Now, I don't claim to be Mr. Handyman or anything, but we've got a toolbox with real screwdrivers, a cordless drill, electric screwdriver, etc. that would make the job about a million times easier.

[QUOTE="Steve81, post: 1124630, member: 61173 she decided to utilize a little key chain screwdriver[/QUOTE]

Why is she out of the kitchen?

My right subs turns off after 10 or 15 min.
If I toggle the power or just unplug and re-plug it, it turns back on.
Has anyone seen my key chain screw driver?

Finally got an update. Looks like sometime in April for the hybrid valve headphone amplifier and DAC. Good to have a rough estimate.

Amazon finally got some Android versions of the Flir One in stock, and I ordered one yesterday. Should get here tomorrow. One more IR camera that I likely won't use...but I couldn't help myself. I've wanted one since I first heard of them.

Got a Dayton Audio MA1240a Multi-Zone 12 Channel Amplifier to replace the fried ones. I'm definitely itching to play with it soon.
