What are the benefits of using a music stereo amp with an AV receiver?

Hi all,

Just a quick update. I finally went with the Denon 6200. It came in last night. In addition, I added 4 x in-ceiling speakers (you can see one of the white circular speakers at the top right corner of this picture). I also transferred the existing sound surround (old Tannoy mercury speakers) as Front Heights. I had managed to spend less than what I intended.

I have not yet configure the system as I am still waiting for the rest of the furniture to come in. But according to my wife (probably more important than mine), it was a huge improvement over the previous 5.1 system. The dialogue and clarity of the old concert dvd disc was so much clearer even though the CLR speakers were still the same ones.

Once again, thanks for all the help and advice.

Be sure to read through the Audyssey instruction carefully and then following instructions to the letter. Also, you can shim the centre speakers up a little in the front so it angles upward slightly, and make sure it has a clear path in front of it. That means move those boxes away as they could be obstructing the centre speaker acoustically.

Cool! Thanks for the reminder. I am actually apprehensive about the setting up with Audyssey as I don't think I can achieve the required quietness in my apartment as I live near the highway.

Can you do it in the middle of the night on New Year Eve? It will do a great job setting up your subwoofer(s). Your room seems quite big, what kind of subs you have, and how many?

Yeah.. I will try to do that actually. My living and dining room combined is more than 30 Sq meters in a rectangular shape. The TV is 60". The TV console itself is 3m. So the dining room is to my back as I took a shot of the current time set up.

I have only one sub - Velodyne 800i.

I am just waiting for the curtains to be in. The furniture just came. I was told that a carpet might help to improve the acoustic. Currently there is a slight echo in the living room at normal conversational tone.

Hi All,
I would like to buy audio/video system for my home.
Purpose:
To watch TV, films and listen to quality music (different genre from rock to classic)
My listening habits - 50% HT and 50% stereo music
I do have:
Room size about: 35 sqm;
Dining & living room furniture dimensions.jpg

Room ceiling: a so called stretched ceiling (see layout and renders in pics).
zal 1 - Copy.jpg

TV Sony 50W807C Android, with TV receiver box;
Xbox (my son connects it to living room TV from time to time)
Wireless network (Ubiquity, 802.11bgn)
Wired network (FTP6 cable) for internet and cable TV,
Satellite cable (coaxial) and receiver box;
Pre-wires room for 5.1 setup (two front, one sub and two rear (rear wall to ceiling corner points).

Considering to buy:
1. AV receiver (in favor of Marantz SR5010, http://www.marantz.co.uk/uk/products/pages/productdetails.aspx?catid=hometheatre&subcatid=avreceiver&productid=sr5010 ) &
2.Speakers. No preferences over brand. Can be floor standing or wall mounted.
Later on will add on
3. a Turntable (please advise on options),
4. Blu-ray player (probably),
I will connect different gadgets/laptops, music streamer for having music in other rooms (probably) and (NAS) Network-attached storage (maybe).

For my listening habits shall I consider adding integrated amplifier on top to AVR?
