I've seen different placements over the years...
In a 7-channel Bed layer:
I think Rear Surrounds should be slightly narrower than your mains, assuming your mains are ideally set up.
Keep in mind, this also goes on the basis that your actual Surrounds are set up properly... I like more in the 100-110º area, to the sides and slightly behind the LP.

In a 5-channel set up...
There are no Rears. You Only have Surrounds (L/R) and Dolby recommends they be 110-120º to the sides and behind LP.

As always, each and every room we inhabit is unique and we all have to play withing the physical space we have available to us.

The Dolby guides are ideals. Get as close to those as possible for best results. :)

Are your rear surrounds pointing straight or angled in? I can't tell from the picture angle.
Yup... That's about what I said. ;) Rear Surround narrower than Mains if possible.

For Atmos/Auro... Tops and Heights are in line with Mains usually... I think the ideal is about 8' apart on center. There are others that will say you should spread the mains further out, still.

Again, so much depends on the room and how you are set up.

I need some help with my rear surround for behind the couch. Should I angle them towards the center of the couch or point them straight. I will have a 7.2.4 and setting my new A8a up tonight. My AV guy said straight forward but Dolby site says angled in a bit

Thanks
Most speakers do sound a better on axis. I would aim them at the LP.

So much is Speaker dependent, though... and we see more often than not a recommendation to not have your mains directly at you LP but rather be off-axis a little, right?

This falls into that category of experimentation, I think... It depends on your Speaker and your room, how best it will sound.

This picture is too generic and doesn’t take into account individual room variables. Like for example, the tops in line with the mains. With a low ceiling height, that would be problematic spacing them out too far.

There are better illustrations out there like this.

Agreed. But imo straight ahead rarely works. I use the same ideal for my mains that you do. I can just see the inside of the cabinets when seated in my LP.

First negative thing I have to report about the RX-A8A : the sound delay for gaming makes it useless. I have more than one second of lag when sound comes from my PC.
Edit: in Atmos straight of course

Got a response from Yamaha: no extended warranty in Canada. “Please note that the RXA series models in Canada are warranty 4 years parts and labour always”

Interesting. Have you reported it to tech service? Was the source for audio and video GPU?

That's one of many reasons we want to see independent reviews. It is Yamaha that should be testing this extensively in their labs and debugging before releasing products into market.

Just for clarity, when you say "straight ahead," do you mean perpendicular to the wall it's on?

For that, especially, I agree. Certain speakers do not want to be toed, but those are more rare. A lot of Speakers like to be slightly off axis, though, for best results which is why I like the idea of firing past and crossing beyond the LP. :)
Surrounds are a little more difficult because of their placement to either side, and I think more depends on the room, setup, and particular speaker being used.

I will do some in depth investigation in win 11 settings first. I found some post about this issue with Denon receivers. Stuff related to speakers configuration/full range. Will double check that I also have the minimum amount of processing and no lip sync delay

edit: Source was a RTX3080 for both video and sound through hdmi 2.1 plugged in the tv, sound is retrieved through eARC

edit 2: will also check TV eARC parameters. And if pc is sending pcm or bitstream

Yes exactly. Perpendicular. I’ve seen people do the time trading thing, but I care about one seat here. And my speakers sound best when they are aimed behind me about four feet. Yes, I’m crazy and use a laser pointer etc. lol. I usually start on axis and play with toe in and go +/- until they image how I want.

Surrounds definitely can be trickier. In part, for what you mentioned, but also our hearing changes as sounds go to the sides and rear.
I think the mantra still remains the same.
Experiment.

So after some tests, I can confirm that the audio delay when outputting Dolby Atmos from my PC does NOT come from the amp.

I tested AppleTV -> amp -> Samsung QN90A hdmi3 (eARC HDMI) :
- Youtube : audio delay video : No perceptible delay
- Any Atmos content : No perceptible delay

TV native app using eARC :
- Youtube : audio delay video : No perceptible delay
- Netflix samsung app Atmos content : No perceptible delay

Windows 11 / PC -> TV -> amp through eARC:
- stereo : game or Youtube audio delay video : no (maybe small) perceptible delay
- 7.1 / Atmos : something like 0.5s delay

So it's more something related with windows Dolby Atmos app (which is a good news to me).

What Firmware is your a8a? You are in Canada right? I didn't finish setting mine up but out of the box it doesn't seem like a firmware update is available. I thought there was but maybe in the USA only?!

1.22. First thing I have done when I have received my AVR is to check firmware update and the menu wasn’t proposing any update while I knew there was one available. I had to wait a few minutes, to switch it off and on and at some point the amp proposed to update on boot.

Funny I left it on over night no update yet.
