I figured the release of the 2600 would create an uproar. Anyway, I was reading one of the many HT magazines at Borders today (taking a break from Biochem cause my brain was hurting). I came across a section dealing with HDMI/DVI questions and also the new DVD format wars that are about to begin.

This is some of my two cents... the receivers that are coming out right now or that are set to come out very soon are going to be the transition phase of the HDMI switch. I personally was looking at getting a nice, new receiver and then I started reading about all the new technology that is on its way to the market. So, I made a judgement call and told myself that if I should buy a receiver that will do want I want/need now (and save some money in the process), get some decent speakers (spend a little more on the speakers), and just wait out this whole HDMI thing until the companies get a handle on what is really the best from a consumer perspective.

I mean if you already have an HDMI DVD player and have the money to get a receiver that will be out dated in two years then that is your choice and I will be jealous of your system (seriously I will be jealous, I like nice stuff). BUT, I consider myself a patient person. Now I will stop because I am sure I have offended someone (sincerest apologies) and also placed doubt in people who had previously made up their mind to run out and get the 2600 (again, sincerest apologies). Cheers!!!

Hehe, no offense taken runninkyle. If your happy with what you have you should wait a bit. Personally, I have everything I need for HT except a receiver. So I need to get one NOW.;)

Called Sound Advice today, had already prepaid for a 2600. I asked when they were expecting them and he said it was bumped to November. I asked about the 3806 and he said thursday they'd be in. woohoo. Its been a long month.

YES -- a new thread would be good

Uh Oh.
I *thought* I had just decided on Pioneer's VSX-74TXVi; it appears I may need to reconsider.
So I don't hijack this thread, I should probably start a new thread to get some thoughts on a comparison between the two....
Uh oh -- I *thought* I just made a great buy for the Pioneer VXS-72 for $864 deilvered (well, it's not a bd price anyway). Should be here in a few days -- and no I couldn't wait a few more months (or whatever) for the new Yamaha 2600 -- so I'm *OK* with it general.

BUT -- one of my primary reasons for being attracted to ithe VXS-72 was its HDMI switching and upconversion. My two primary video sources are HDTV cable (with DVI video and optical audio outputs) and a DVD player (with component video/optical audio outs). As far as I know the VSX-72 preserves the resolution of these basic HDTV formats and doesn't really need upconversion "as such". I also have an old VCR, but hardly ever use it since the cable STB also has DVR 160GB capacity. Only need the VCR for "legacy" tapes which someday will be converted to DVD -- when I get DVD recorder.

BUT -- Any thoughts or observations on this situation with regard to the forthcoming availability of the Yam 2600 would be welcomed. Maybe later this week I can put my VSX-72 (NIB!) up for auction on eBAY and get close to what I paid for it.

YES -- I would really welcome a new thread to get comparisons between the Pioneer VSX-74/72 series and the new new Yamaha 2600.

Does anybody know if the setup menu of the 2600 works through HDMI? The Denon3806 does not, it's in 480i and the hdmi doesn't handle it.
The OSD does work. The yamaha rx-v4600 also didn't allow the setup menu over HDMI.

Will this be the case with the 2600 also?

Release Date

Just checked with the local Tweeter. The manager said that the 1600 is supposed to be available on Nov. 1, and the 2600 on Nov. 3.

Any idea when it's going to hit the stores? I'm torn between the 4600, 2600 and the two new Denon's...
Should be next month, I have specials going on with this rec, when it arrives

Gene, Please review and compare the power of the 2600 to the 4600 when you get a sample, especially at 4 ohms. You will anyways I know. I'm just wondering how badly screwed over ( or not )did I get with the 4600.

Thanks Yamaha :(

As an appetizer, you can already download the manual for the European version of the RX-V1600. I know, the 1600 won't scale over HDMI (only upconvert).

RX-V2600 will have HDMI 1.2

spoke to Yamaha yesterday and they said it will have HDMI 1.2 when it releases -- so the receiver will pretty much have everything. Mate this thing with a nice plasma through HDMI and connect your media center PC with DVI and get an SACD player with HDMI 1.2 if you're so inclined and you will have everything at your finger tips.

Do you know if the RX-V1600 have HDMI 1.2 as well? I would assume it will since the 2600 will have it.

Interesting, I thought it was going to ship with HDMI 1.1, had I known they made the 1.2 spec, I might not have bought my Panasonic amp.

Hi first post here and already excited about the upgrade of my current system. I am after a HD A/V amp and this looks just about perfect! Has anyone heard of the release of the PAL/240v model (for us in Oz)? In particular will it support:
* De-Interlacing of 480i to 480p and 576i to 576p; and
* Up-Scaling 480i to 1080i/720p and 586i to 1080i/720p

Couple of other Q's
1) Can this amp handle switiching 1080p sources (say from a media PC?)
2) Does it support Digital Radio (or just AM/FM)

Thanks
Nathan

Hmm, I wonder if the 2600 will have audio sync issues like the 4600 that I sampled did. I'm liking this 3806 I picked up but to get THX and hdmi 1.2 would be nice. Not if I have to sacrifice sync'ed audio tho.

I emailed Yamaha about the 1080p issue, and I was told that it should have no problems passing a 1080p signal.

I called both Yamaha and my local dealer this week. They are saying 1.1 for the 2600. Didn't ask about the 1600

Yamaha UK said they'd ship with 1.1 but with upgrade capability to 1.2 or even 1.3.

How is that possible? Wouldn't it require a new set of chips to be installed?

I'm guessing it would be upgraded via a firmware update.
