An interesting YouTube clip of 8+ minutes length showing a motorized attack by Ukrainian forces while under fire by the Russian invaders.

Translated by DeepL:

>>>500 days of war. Hard, bloody battles for the freedom of the Motherland.

In this video we will demonstrate the work of the 3rd Mechanized Battalion of the 54th Mechanized Brigade. The vehicles were used to deliver infantry to the trenches on the front line. The delivery conditions and the environment are worthy of special attention. It's hard to imagine how a soldier feels in or on the vehicle. Every meter of Ukrainian land is worth the blood of our defenders.<<<

Turkey is going to approve Swedish membership of NATO, with only Hungary left to do so. Hungary has said they won’t be the only NATO member saying no.

So here Putin lost big-time with Finland and Sweden as NATO members, something that would not have happened if not for his brutal and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.

Apparently the Turkish parliament will approve Swedish membership of NATO in October at earliest.

Hopefully this will pass but has been going on for some years.

>>>WASHINGTON, July 12 (Reuters) - Democratic and Republic senators renewed an effort to block any U.S. president from leaving NATO on Wednesday, as leaders of the alliance attended an eventful summit in Vilnius, Lithuania.

The joint resolution, seen by Reuters, is a fresh effort by Congress to prevent the president from withdrawing from the alliance without the Senate's approval.

"The President shall not suspend, terminate, denounce, or withdraw the United States from the North Atlantic Treaty, done at Washington, DC, April 4, 1949, except by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, provided that two-thirds of the Senators present concur or pursuant to an Act of Congress," the measure says. …<<<

Has anyone noticed how Yevgeny Prigozhin can easily pass for a Hollywood bad guy? If he moves fast, he just might have a second career.

Apparently there was an attack tonight on the Crimean Bridge damaging the road part (not the railway, sadly). It gives me a weird feeling to link to a site with Pravda in its name for me growing up during the Cold War.

Edit: Now reported on Reuters as well: https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/crimea-bridge-key-russian-supply-line-damaged-two-dead-reports-blasts-2023-07-17/

Quote below from
>>>Ukrainian Pravda sources have reported that the night attack on the Crimean Bridge was a special operation by the Security Service of Ukraine and Naval Forces.

Source: Ukrainian Pravda source in Ukraine’s Security Service

Quote: "Ukraine’s Security Service and the Naval Forces of Ukraine were involved in the blowing up of the Crimean Bridge at night."

Details: The bridge was attacked using surface drones. ...<<<

This is an interesting thread about the situation in Ukraine. The author seems to have some insight, but I don't know how solid his statements are.

His main point seems to be that the Ukraine military is not fully up to speed on tactics:

>>>2.) Ukrainian forces have still not mastered combined arms operations at scale. Operations are more sequential than synchronized. This creates various problems for the offense & IMO is the main cause for slow progress.<<<

This assessment seems harsh, but he might be correct. On the other hand, I wonder if Ukraine really has enough equipment to conduct "combined arms operations at scale."

Russia is now bombing very close to the Romanian border and Romania is a member of NATO.

From the Romanian President:

>>>I strongly condemn the recent Russian attacks against the Ukrainian civilian infrastructure on #Danube, very close to Romania. This recent escalation pose serious risks to the security in the #BlackSea. It also affects further UA grain transit & thus the global food security.<<<

We’re too beholden to the brutal genocidal dictatorship China.

>>>… Evidence of this kind shows that China, despite Beijing’s calls for peace, is pushing right up to a red line in delivering enough nonlethal, but militarily useful, equipment to Russia to have a material impact on President Vladimir Putin’s 17-month-old war on Ukraine. The protective gear would be sufficient to equip many of the men mobilized by Russia since the invasion. Then there are drones that can be used to direct artillery fire or drop grenades, and thermal optical sights to target the enemy at night.

These shipments point to a China-sized loophole in the West’s attempts to hobble Putin’s war machine. The sale of so-called dual-use technology that can have both civilian and military uses leaves just enough deniability for Western authorities looking for reasons not to confront a huge economic power like Beijing.

The wartime strength of China’s exports of dual-use products to Russia is confirmed by customs data. And, while Ukraine is a customer of China too, its imports of most of the equipment covered in this story have fallen sharply, the figures show.

Russia has imported more than $100 million-worth of drones from China so far this year — 30 times more than Ukraine. And Chinese exports of ceramics, a component used in body armor, increased by 69 percent to Russia to more than $225 million, while dropping by 61 percent to Ukraine to a mere $5 million, Chinese and Ukrainian customs data show.

“What is very clear is that China, for all its claims that it is a neutral actor, is in fact supporting Russia’s positions in this war,” said Helena Legarda, a lead analyst specializing in Chinese defense and foreign policy at the Mercator Institute for China Studies, a Berlin think tank. …<<<

I'd like to believe that Russia is in the process of exhausting itself in Ukraine, but this may not be correct. Some observers think that Putin is holding out in hopes that Trump wins the 2024 election and pulls U.S. support for Ukraine. This seems plausible, but I doubt anyone knows for sure.

>>>[F]ar from seeking an off ramp . . . Putin is preparing for an even bigger war."
