It borrows a LOT from the original, since the plot follows much the same formula, however the little nods to the original are really a good reason why it is best to have seen the original one first. I am a big fan of the original too, and though the visuals are very dated, the story is still quite good; better than the new one IMO. I am a fan enough that I bought the "everything" pack that has both films.
