Speaker Set-up

Well I've gone from a entry level jvc to a denon 3805.My old avr set up was basic set room size(sm,m,lg) and speaker size (sm,lg) and your done.Now, I would like to know setting up the denon and speakers correctly.Should I invest in that set up mic or setting up room manually is as accurate.Also,my current mains are Athena b2's (love them) should I set them to small rather then large with this amp cause they were set to large in old set up.

Didn't your 3805 come with a mic? My 2805 did. Just plugged it in, ran the auto set-up feature, did some minor adjustments and it was good to go!

Set them to small and x-over where the speakers run out of bass. The 3805 is pretty powerful and your Athenas are pretty efficient so I don't think you will have any problems running your rig at reference levels with the speakers set to large unless your room is real big but why waste the power sending the real low bass freq. to speakers that don't go that low to begin with.

Get a RS spl meter and set all to small,80 x over and 75db with the meter,thats basic setup and then you can play around.

I'm not quite sure why I keep reading that people should set their speakers to "small" when they are perfectly capable of producing bass? I've read a few articles on it and it sort of makes sense, but was definitely NOT the way to go in my case. I have Boston VR2's, that are rated to 40Hz. I set my crossover at 60Hz and went back and forth between "small" and "large" on my 2805. With the fronts set to "small", it definitely sounded like there was quite a bit of missing sound.

If my speakers are capable of playing down to 40Hz, why wouldn't I want to use them to their full potential?

I'm not sure what the frequency response of your Athena's are Billy. But I would suggest experimenting with setting them as "small" and "large" and see what sounds best to you. It's your system. I know "large" certainly sounds better to me.

So do you think your speakers set to lg trying to push not only bass but LFE and working its a$$ of to do that is better then setting it to small and letting it relax to play nice and easy and free it up to be better at the mids? What do ya think?BTW,i also have the 2805 with B&W 603's that play down to 47Hz and they are on small and sound much better and the denon runs abit cooler also.

Well,they sound better with the denon power period. But to be honest I think since they are bookshelf speaker their ability to go real low is beyond them,so setting to small and letting the sub to the work makes sense to me.If I had your floors speakers I'd have to see(b&w's or vr2's) would be very nice additions at this moment but WAF at this point out of the question.Thanks again

If you have a reciever with "questionable" power ratings (such as some of the entry-level "100wpc" units that actually put out around 30wpc), I would just put it on "small" anyways.

If you have a solid reciever, then I would look at the speaker....if the speaker can hit down to the high 30s with +-3dB, then large is good....if it can hit to 45 +-3dB, then it's up to you, but if it cannot even hit below 50hz....just set it to low and let the sub carry the big stick.

v logical. thats the answer, plainly.

As a rule of thumb (according to several experts), whenever you got a sub woofer in your system, just set ALL speakers to SMALL and you'll be done. That really gets the burden out from your speakers & receiver and sends the heavy loads down to the sub, which has the only function of getting huge quantities of bass/LFE signals.

In other hand, if you DON'T have a sub and your main speakers are really FULL RANGE, than is a different story; even though some experts still recommends you to set the full range speakers to small (if you have a sub).

Roughly talking, we could consider this something like giving an "extra breath" to both, your receiver & speakers, meaning a longer endurance, though.

How do you figure my speakers are struggling to produce bass frequencies when my crossover is set at 60Hz? Is that not the whole point of a crossover? I can't vouch for how cool my 2805 runs, but I sure as hell know that my speakers sound better set to large. I do what sounds better to me. If you think that's wrong; oh well.

Sub crossover is set to 80Hz on the 3805.Should I set the same freq# on sub or turn it up or down also the volume control set to low or high!!

If i was in Vegas,i wouldnt bet on me moving. Heck i'm learning more then i know but most people even with some "KILLER" speakers set them to small for more then 1 reason but hey,i could be wrong but i'm sure 87 will figure it out and be as happy as a bug.
