sony, should they live or die?

What do you think of sony and do you think they should crash and burn or live on?

Half my entertainment center is made by Sony, why would I want them to fail? I've always been much impressed with their products.

I can't vote in the pole, because my answer is neither of the options. What they should do is CHANGE.

Sony use to be an inovative company, but now are mired in the RIAA mess.

If they can't adapt, I guess they'll go the way of the dinosaurs.

Sony should live on. But, as corey said, they need to change. They need to get a clue about what is needed and what is not. They need to be willing to work to find a solution instead making more problems.

I'm with corey & outsider: they just need to clue in and adjust their attitude. Like many other large companies they seem to have forgotten that it's we unwashes masses that pay their wages & it's all about the product. If they alienate their customer base badly enough long enough they will fail & that will be a lose-lose situation. This whole RIAA mess is doing a good job of that.

I own no Sony audio or video gear, not even a Walkman (overpriced and overhyped). I do own Sony gaming equipment and will probably buy the PS3 when it comes out. I also own the Xbox and I'm not sure I'll buy the 360 till it's been fully tested and new games come out.

Sony

While Sony isn't know for Receivers or other audio gear, they still make some good products, like computers, PS3, games, and CD/DVD media. All your gear is no good if you have no media to play.

I wouldn't buy Sony audio equipment, but I do have a Sony 46" CRT projection HDTV and it probably has the best picture of any tv's in the same price range and even higher, crystal clear and vibrant. Just my opinion though... and I shopped around for about 3 months trying to decide with set to go with. Now i am sure if I spend 3x as much on a much better brand it would be different, but I have always liked their TV's. I have had experiences with their computers and have had no problems with them, but would never buy one for myself. I don't consider them a "top of the line" brand on most of their stuff anymore like I did, say 10 or 15 years ago, but still a good product for the most part.

The only piece of Sony equipment I own is a Walkman CD player that was given to me. I won't be buying any Sony products. I believe there are products from other companies that are just as good, or better, for a lower price. Their recent copy protection debacle was the last straw. I hope they crash and burn. It would teach them a lesson, maybe.

i totally agree with everything you've said ('cept the ps3 part.. i own no ps(2) stuff, i think sony should drop outa the gaming industry and stick with tv's and dvd players... the only sony electronic i own is a dvd player...

my reaction: yep... Maxell and Memorex make better cd/dvd's, sony has over priced... everything and they're putting useless crap in the ps3, like a dvd burner (which I’ve heard you need to purchase a special ps3 program separately to use...if that's true the sony executives must have severe brain damage...), but i might get one of thier surround sound systems... probably just get a panasonic one..

Maybe he is bashing Sony, so what? People on this forum bash Bose all the time too! Nothing wrong with an opinion, remember, garbage in = garbage out and that is my opinion on Sony.

I like Sony, but I know they don't make the best of anything. My main HT speakers, except for my center channel, are Sony SSK speakers I bought at clearance prices. Teamed up with the autoeq in my Denon 3805 they sound pretty darn good for cheap speakers. They will easily hold me over until I can afford better speakers. My previous receiver was a Sony also. It lasted me 7 years of service with no problems before I sold it and bought a Denon. My father also has a Sony 55" Grand Wega LCD rear projection TV that is very nice (although not as nice as my Toshiba RP-HDTV). And I have a entry level Sony CD/radio in my work truck that has performed flawlessly since I installed it.

Again, Sony products are not the best in any catagory, but they are not made to be the best. They are made to provide enough quality, reliabilty, and performance to the average consumer, not enthusiasts that are on this board.

How is NoMan unethical because he likes Microsoft and not Sony? I'm not a fanboy of either one. I own an Xbox, I don't own a Playstation, and I don't like Sony. Does that make me unethical?

Sony has made more than a few little mistakes. Generally their products are of average to lower than average quality. I'd rather buy from Panasonic, Toshiba, Samsung, and the others that make better products for lower prices. Sony charges for their name not unlike Bose and Monster.

Sony isn't doing well either. They just laid off 10,000 people.
