Receiver is out of date, what to upgrade to?

I seriously doubt you can outperform an spl meter at determining spl levels, but that has nothing to do with what you're posting about the Denon. A few weeks ago you were asking basic questions about an avr and now you're an expert? LOL

So I recently decided to build a home theater. My issue is that i have an old Denon avr-483 that I got second hand because I was only going to do stereo. But due to circumstances in shipping delays and order problems I ended up with buying more and now have a full 5.2 setup (potentially going to 7.2). The receiver is out dated to the point of not hdmi,. Everywhere I read says hdmi is a must. It sounds fine the way I have it, but I would like hdmi for connecting all my devices.

My question is, I am on a budget (around $500) and I don't have the room for any height channels so should I buy a newer dtsx/atmos capable receiver or try to find a higher end previous gen without those capabilities?

Center: JBL ES25C
Subs: 2 Sony wa2500
Using a projector and tv.
Main source will be xbox, bluray, cablebox, music

You may not need a new AVR.

This is what I used with my Denon-3803 that does not have HDMI inputs when I wanted to connect a Roku. I extracted the audio via spdif right to the Denon. It worked like a charm. For the price you can get a few if need be, especially if you're happy with your Denon otherwise.

Why would that be particularly relevant? What specific Denon avr are you talking about? The only Denon mentioned specifically aside from the OP's 483 is the 3200 and it has one simple review of 5 of 5 stars on the Denon site. The Denon review section is not much of a reference in any case, subjective reviews (like yours) are often of little use particularly with something like an avr especially without a more complete analysis of what the comparo setup was based on let alone any knowledge of your particular taste in things audio.

@Movielover95 sorry for the sidetrack. Eargiant brings up a good point, if the current avr is doing what you need to audio-wise, the difference in going to HDMI for lossless codecs and 7.1 is subtle...

Like Pogre, I resist threads like this because they become pointless when the OP gets belligerent or starts making claims that fly in the face of reality. There's a reason for SPL meters to exist. They perform a measurement task that produces a result. Like a ruler to measure length and produce a result. Are your eyes better than a ruler? Neither are your ears better for measuring sound levels for a match.

You were in a demo showroom. By definition, you were not on a level playing field. There's nothing about walking in to a demo room that's designed to give you a level playing field experience. Do you think you're on a level playing field in a Casino with 98% slot returns? The house wins even at those odds.

Sound is everything - it's that simple.
Don't tell me about how you like a measuring device , your ears are the ultimate decider.
You're in a Best Buy sound room it's 100xs better than anywhere else you can test without buying 5 avrs to bring home.

A BB show room is 100x than anywhere else? Now we're getting somewhere ! If y'all think a BB showroom is a great place, 100x better than anywhere else, I think we have come to the real source of our differences in opinion.

I have owned Denon's for many generations of their product. I have a brand new one I am testing right now. Muted? Gimme a break. Side by side in my own personal listening space, its virtually indistinguishable from my tried and true 8 year old model. Keep all the variables the same (as much as possible) and you should be able to swap AVRs one to another and hear very little difference once they are level set.

You are entitled to your opinions. I got no problem with you believing every word you've typed so far.
An opinion is a personal belief and you are certainly entitled to yours.

You didn't hijack the thread. Thunderclap hijacked it by chiming in very early with his insightful, accurate, and very detailed assessment of Denon's AVR capabilities. When a streaker runs across the football field, he tends to divert attention from the game. I guess our attention was diverted. Good news!
I think the streaker got tackled and carried off the field.
