Who the hell cares about the person? It's all about the sound, as a whole.
When I was growing up, the music was everything, and nobody cared what the musicians looked like (in most cases, we didn't even know what they looked like.) (Solo singers were an exception, of course.) Steve Howe, Geddy Lee, Lemmy, etc. were just simply not photogenic.
Then MTV came along, and suddenly looks mattered. The music suffered greatly as a result. I think that we are beginning to see respect for bands that have the chops but not the looks again, thankfully.

I don't know. I can't even listen to an all new rock channel. It all sounds like DONNA DONNA DONNA DONNA DONNA to me. The newest band I can think of that was good would be System of a Down, and even I can't sit and listen to them. But they are talented, and not that new.

HMMM?

Bass player is the lead in both bands.
Geddy is more talented. Les is more creative.

Bass player is the singer in both bands.
Neither can sing. I honestly don't think it's the point.

Guitar player takes the backseat in both bands.
Alex is more talented. Ler is more creative.

All three drummers are killer.
Neil is the best rock drummer ever. Tim is my second favorite. I like Brains work with the band, as well as his other work with Les.

Looks like they compare to me.

Rush

RUSH needs to be on a great format such as XRCD or SACD and even HDCD That would take their material to a higher level. RUSH makes albums- primus makes songs! I like both of them!

I agree and would take it further. Geddy's unique style and range make him an acquired taste, but once you learn to appreciate it for what it is, it becomes clear that he is a great singer. Neil's songs were written for Geddy's voice, and I don't think anyone else could sing them nearly as well.

There are a lot of new (or at least recent) groups that I really enjoy. Ones that I can think of offhand include:
Secret Machines
New Pornographers
Interpol
Rilo Kiley
Bright Eyes
The Arcade Fire
Battles
Granddaddy
Low
Mew
The Young Knives
Midlake
The Bird and the Bee
Animal Collective
Broken Social Scene
Pure Reason Revolution
Zilla
Super Furry Animals...

and more, tons more.:)

In addition there is quite a bit of progressive rock and metal that I enjoy, which is certainly not mainstream, or "DONNA DONNA DONNA" as you say :D

Dream Theater
Symphony X
Opeth
Porcupine Tree
Pain of Salvation

Just to name a few....

Dream Theater is certainly not new. Extremely talented. Another one I just can't get into. But, superb musicians.;)

I dig Porcupine Tree. Great band. No air time here.:(

Others I have never heard of.

I must not understand the meaning of "donna donna donna" as you are using it. To me, that describes the sound of heavy/headbanging rock.

Musicians strumming the same note over and over. Sounds like donna donna donna. Fingers not moving.
