My dad and I don't have the same musical taste, so I don't believe we are supposed to either. I do enjoy checking-out bands I have never heard of though. You may find one that I can relate to one day.
You didn't like Thrice? Go back one page, I have like 6 different bands posts. See if you like Thrice.

You have had me check them out in the past. You were passionate about them. I am not.:( I don't know how to explain it. It's a youth sound that I have never liked. Crap back from my youth that sucked in a similar way.

Please warn me next time you are going to put skid row in a unlisted link!

I'm in the same boat as you, sorry Sheep, I couldn't even finish most of those songs you posted...

Then you clearly didn't give it a chance. You need to hear them through, all the way.

PLEASE look up Thirce, as most of their stuff is soft. That one song was the only recent one with a video.

Nothing to do with heaviness Sheep, I listen to Opeth for pete's sake! The rythms and changes are very punkish and boring to me, no musical variation between choruses, or verses. It's just not my kind of music, that's all I'm saying, I've actually listened to 3 or 4 of their songs now, it didn't grow on me, in fact I like it even less now that i've heard a couple songs...sorry.

Thrice, yeah, they're not that experimental anymore. Their older stuff was harder, now their post-hardcore. Try the poison the well. And trust me, this isn't Punk. Punk is 4 chord crap.

OK, back to "deepness" in music.

Music is only as deep as the listener, just as life is only as deep as the liver (no, not THAT kind of liver!). Were the mature Beatles deep?: "I am the eggman, goo goo ga choo." How about typical lyrics of ostensiby deep, progressive rock band Yes?: "Dawn of thought transfered through moments of days undersearching earth. Revealing corridors of time provoking memories, disjointed but with purpose." Or pick any Bob Dylan song (the first rapper, btw - just listen to Subterrainian Homesick Blues). Fine line between nonsense and profound, silly and deep. What do lyrics really mean? WHO CARES? The literal meaning of lyrics is not what gives a song its deep emotional impact on a listener. The singer is just another musical instrument. ALL music is instrumental, even a cappella. If you want left-brain meaning, read a book. Music appeals to a different part of our brain.

Couldn't agree with this more. In fact, I am just as happy listening to music that doesn't even have a singer, or lyrics. Many times I like it more, because a bad singer or medicore lyrics can get in the way of otherwise great music!

Me too. In fact, a lot of my music is instrumental. (Also, a lot of it that has singing would be improved if it didn't!) I also enjoy listening to music in a foreign language, as not understanding the lyrics helps me appreciate the voice as an instrument. (A recent favorite is Tinariwen.)

I whole-heartedly agree...some of my favorite current music is by Sigur Ros: half of their lyrics are in Icelandic (which I don't understand in the slightest) and half are quite literally nonsense: an invented "language" (really just quasi-systematic nonsense syllables). I can't even tell the difference between their nonsense songs and their Icelandic songs. But the music has an immense emotional impact (to me at least).

Sigur Ros, "untitled #1" (aka "Vaka"):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0AZIFmkogY

One of their "nonsense" songs, with a wicked creepy video. If you don't like the music but want to hear the nonsense singing, skip to about 2:20.

Good lyrics are a nice bonus to good music, and is very important in some music, but I really despise when certain "singer-songwriter" types obviously spend a lot of time on their lyrics, then set them to boring, cliche music. Just write a book of poetry already.

You don't understand Icelandic??? Good God man, where did you go to school?
And you're right...good lyrics ARE a nice bonus. They just don't have to mean anything.

Here is another weird situation.
The singing doesn't matter. But, it does.
The lyrics don't matter, but they do.
I can't put my finger on it.
Les flat-out can't sing. But, I love it.
I don't pay attention to most lyrics, but I think they need to be there.
Ex. I purchased Joe Satriani live. http://www.amazon.com/Satriani-Live-Joe/dp/B000IFQLK0/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_k2a_1_img/103-8506857-0501464?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-2&pf_rd_r=0S862BQG50024M12GQSZ&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_p=304485601&pf_rd_i=B00005NGA2 I am a fan. But, I get bored with it. It is missing what gives the song a feeling, or meaning. Even though I could care less what it's about.

Whoa, whoa, whoa....I can name at least 4 Pink Floyd albums that are worse than Obscured By Clouds:

Ummagumma
Atom Heart Mother
More
The Division Bell
Possibly Saucerful of Secrets also.

The other reason I picked this screen name is I'm a pilot, so, Obscured By Clouds kinda fits me. :)

Ok, I'll give ya Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother. More and Saucerful of Secrets I'm not familiar with. I like The Division Bell, even though it's more Gilmour than Floyd.

I'm obscured by clouds too, even though I'm not a pilot...
