So, stupid here deleted the email by mistake. Eh, will wait for another one. Gonna' head out to the Redbox this afternoon to redeem one of the two Happy Birthday From Us free movie rentals I received some time ago.

I got rid of DirecTV a coupla years ago now, the vast majority of the available channels were full of crap content and/or crap advertising I didn't want to see, and don't always want to have to record in advance on a dvr and then try and guess on commercial length to bypass such

Man, commercials were also a HUGE part of what made it not so hard for me cancel when it came time to renew. Commercials on TV were just ridiculously getting out of hand! The dvr'd stuff iirc averaged 6 button presses, about 3 minutes, to skip the commercials. Then they give you 5 minutes of programming and there's another break. I counted 15 button presses one time! 30 seconds per skip maths out to 7 1/2 minutes of straight commercials! It was getting to the point that a 30 minute show was almost literally half commercials. I mean literally literally! Lol. God I hate commercials. Even the 5 second yt ones are irritating, but you can use an ad blocker to get around that.

The ethernet cable is just another cord and one's internet service cost is the baseline now. You can lump cell service in there as well. Truly cutting the cord would mean getting grandpa's huge antenna off of his roof and connecting it directly to one's TV, listening broadcast radio and heading to the library every once and awhile to use their computers and check out media. Household entertainment/cell/internet costs can really skyrocket because convenience is expensive and it's just too easy to blow money on and in apps. I found I needed to reevaluate some things and made some adjustments. We'll leave the money spent on devices off the table for now. Just received an email from Paramount + to come back and enjoy 30 free days. I'll take it!

I do spend a lot less for entertainment every month than I was with cable. I only have 2 or 3 subscriptions now and find a lot of free entertainment online. I've discovered a bunch of really pretty cool yt channels. I'm into a astronomy, a little astrophysics, quantum mechanics... all that sciencey stuff, and yt is loaded with it. From short 10 minute videos to 2 hour long deep dives and compilations. PBS Spacetime, Kurzgesagt, and Sci Show are legit good educational content to name a few. I'd go one further and say they're better than what most of Discovery and the History channel were putting out when I canceled.

Get out, there are 4K Smithsonian shows? HDR too or 4K?

Those are 4K SDR. Paramount+ has stepped up their HDR offerings. The Game and the two live-action Star Trek shows are both in 1080p HDR. They have several movies in 4K HDR (with Atmos). Guilty Party and the Good Fight are also in 4K HDR. Unlike most streaming services, they support HDR10, HDR10+, and DV. Note that HDR might not be available on all devices (*cough* Samsung TV native clients), but Amazon the latest 4K Fire TV devices support HDR for Paramount+.
