Outlaw - 5 Channel Amp or 5 Monoblocks?

I went with the Earthquake Sound 3 channel AMP and a couple
Outlaw Audio M2200s for the surrounds ( by the way, I have
had the Denon AVR-4802 powering my surrounds for a few years
but since I started using the Outlaw's to power the surrounds
less than a week ago, the speaker grills were blown off about
3/4 of an inch :) As unscientific as this is, I suspect the
Outlaw Audio M2200s are doing a better job than my 4802
in powering the surrounds ).

I am using the 4802 as a pre/pro will eventually upgrade to
a processor. I believe using a receiver to power your surrounds
and the an AMP for the LCR is also a very good strategy ( and one
I was using before I got the Earthquake amp ).
Here is what we really want to know. Connect the outlaw monoblocks to your fronts and the earthquake to your center and surrounds and recalibrate. Which sounds better, delivers more power, etc. to your fronts? The outlaws real 200 Watts @ 8 ohms or the earthquakes quoted 1K Watts @ 2 ohms?

For most soundtracks I bet most people could not tell a difference. But
the Earthquake AMP 600 watts into 4 ohms is certainly more real than the
Outlaw AMPs 300 watts into 4 ohms - check out the designs! For example
the Earthqake amp has a 3.6KVA transformer, etc. Check out the design
and preveiw both amps before spouting dribble about what is real or not...

For War of the Worlds at reference level, no question, and I would not risk
having to send another Outlaw Audio AMP to Outlaw Audio for repair...

I am not telling, I am asking. You have both amps and I would be interested in your review.

A specs sheet can only go so far. For example, I am not aware of many HT speakers that go down to 2 ohms, so the Earthquakes 2 ohm spec is pretty irrelevant. Common since also tells me that the Earthquake cannot deliver 1000 Watts with all channels driven into any North American home because it would trip a dedicated 20 Amp breaker.

I'm just jealous that I don't have the problem of deciding whether the Earthquake or the Outlaw monoblocks would be better for driving my mains. :(

man, I wish I had these kinds of decisions to make :D
- However, I am excited about the 5 channel amp getting ready to hit AV123.com soon - this is looking like a PERFECT option for me - http://www.av123.com/products_product.php?section=processors&product=29.1
This amp has a lot of possibilities:rolleyes:
Emotiva Ultra-Lite LPA-1 Seven Channel Amplifier PRE-ORDER for $599.00
125 watt x 6 channels is a good starter for anybody.

In my case it would fit my bill as a multi-room amp for my B zone.

I agree it is unlikley that my speakers will dip to 2 ohms for more than
a brief moment.

I have an isolated 20 AMP circuit for the Earthquake Sound 3 channel AMP
which means that I can provide 2400 Watts pretty much continuously
to my AMP which is very efficient and can provide 1800 watts continuously
to my 4 ohm speakers ( but again, I doubt I will ever have to do this for more
than a few moments during movie peaks ).

At reference level watching WOTWs,there simply is no comparison with the
Outlaw Audio monoblock. The Outlaw clips and the Earthquake Rocks!
For most soundtracks at normal listening levels most people probably would
not hear a difference ( I believe the Earthquake sound AMP is more fuller and
detailed at normal listening levels but this could be purely subjective ).

.....TDeluce, I suspect your reasoning from listening is not subjective....110 signal noise at 10k, with over 95 db's of channel seperation, and THD of .006 as the worst offender....that's down-right humbling specs....who cares if it falls slightly short of full power ratings at all channels driven when it's rated 600 watts at 4 and it has a solid 2 ohm rating?....

Slight hijack...

Someday, I would love to own either an FM Acoustics amp or a Boulder 2000 Series amp. They're amazing pieces of work. Specs to die for.

They hand assemble and hand test each amp before shipping.

My SNR varied from 116.9 to 117.1 dB into 4 ohms with 0.005 THD for each channel :)

when I upgraded to amps I purchased 3. Two 2 channel, and one 3 channel. The 7 channel was too expensive and too heavy to put anyplace. And going from a 5 + 2 channel configuration to a 3 + 2 + 2 channel configuration was only a few hundred dollars more. That way if ever 1 amps got smoked (heaven forbid) I would still be left with 4-5 active channels.

I can also control the zones/speakers better.
If I watch TV (yuck), or play PS1/PS2 games I only turn on 1 amp. [3]
If I watch movies (5.1) I turn on two amps. [3+2]
If I listen to CD's or watch movies (6.1, 7.1) I turn on all 3. [3+2+2]

I don't like the trigger or auto modes that much. I do everything manually. Powering up all 3 amps causes my speakers to pop.

.....DTulouseStreet, you ever listen to The Dooby Brothers?....Listen To The Music....man, that song sold a lot of Advent and Cerwin Vega speakers....back to the matter at hand....TDeluce, a 5 channel Grande with XLR inputs is quite possible for me....it would handle the main's regiment in a 5.2.2 system....news of a drop shipment being allowed, would for sure, help light the tree in this humble dwelling, this glorious season, remember the reason....nobody, on this Earth, loves you like your mate, and your blood kin....if there's pride in the way of comfortably being around a blood kin, may you be determined, to resolve that issue, this very season....and that's the best I got for you tin-eared Neanderthals at this time.....

.....Doug, while we're looking at 5 channels being taken care of, I sure wish someone could throw a really good price at us on five channels of Earthquake, and I'll quit with that....maybe........
If you really want to be done get two of the 3 channel Earthquakes and
install two dedicated 20 amp isolated circuits - one for each of them :)

For me, my surrounds are a lot closer to the listening position/s than
my LCR and the surrounds tend not to need so much power so a
single 3 channel for my LCR works out great...

.....TDeluce, absolutely, one 3 channel with Outlaw mono's on the back channels would be mighty tough....if my 5 channel happens, and I want to try two rear speakers, one more K2 might be bought after testing pulling one off a sub, to enhance the voices of the other 5 members of the main's regiment ....and, we could quite possibly, once again, find a sound argument for an amplifier's damping-factor-rating, being somewhere around Venus....then again, I may find out with the Grande, that the K2's really are just PA amps, who knows?, who cares?, they're magnificent on the low end....I ain't heard the Grande yet....but all the specs are there....time out....one spec is not there....I'm calling Earthquake tomorrow and have somebody tell me the damping factor, and I'll not hang up until I get it....sure, I've been hung up on a few times, haha.......

.....edit....let's see....15,000 watts stable at 2, 13 channels, and we're lookin' for the "voices"....boys, this home theater of mine might start breathin' fore it's over....it gets no onions, from here on, anyway....the K2's love French fries and onion rings though, with the Mac pre-amp leaning to salads, actually....yeah, I'm tickled over the notion of the Grande, and actin' stupid....it ain't as much of an act as you might think, probly, but I get determined at times......
