Once again: what are you listening to now?

Donald Fagen's "Nightfly". This early 80's solo album sounds a lot like the Steely Dan record you didn't hear. Cool, jazzy, complex, precisely played and excellently recorded, this is a low-key keeper.

Interesting, as I got that album as a promotional offer of five free CDs when I bought my CD player in 1983. Anyway, it's a fairly clean recording, not all that unpleasant to listen to, but the subject matter often seems wry, even depressing in some tracks. Others are a mixed bag. Oh well, it was made after 1969, so that's par for the course I suppose...

Another great by the master of the eccentric...Tom Waits' new live CD "Glitter and Doom". These are songs we have heard before but they mostly sound different from their studio versions. That's one of the great things about Tom. He never seems to do a song twice the same way. These are especially dark and growly, even by Tom Waits standards.
I was on one of the concerts in the Glitter and doom tour, specificially in Prague, Czhech republic.... the concert was beyound unbelievable, pure simple first class magic from start to end :D

I wish I'd been there. I've never seen Waits live but from the many videos that are on Youtube, I imagine that he puts on a great show.

Taking a journey way back to psychedelia...."Blows Against the Empire" by an early version of Jefferson Starship. All the hippies hijack a starship and head for the Andromeda galaxy where life will be transcendent and resplendent. This is a great trip to acid soaked, jammy, revolutionary Sci-Fi.

Now it's Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and their CD Dig!!! Lazarus Dig!!!. Think of biblical Lazarus being raised from the dead today and "Larry" has to find out what contemporary life is like. He's not sure he's glad to be back. I love this album. It's like some synthesis of the Velvet Underground, Jim Morrison and a beat poet rap and who knows what else. Highly recommended for lovers of the eccentric.

I think the Youtube videos don't even get close to service justice to his performance.....
Closing time and Waltzing Matilda on the concerts was beyond magic

Checkout Waltzing matilda on Youtube and you get a slight idea......
Very old clip, but still :p

Phil Lesh and friends, Saratoga Springs, 7.02.06. It's a triple CD of a jammy, post-Dead bunch of musicians playing with Lesh. I'ts familiar to anybody who knows the old Dead stuff, somewhat jazzier and, honestly, better played than most of the Grateful Dead. It's a nice session.

I'll check them out. A lot of what's on Youtube is a mixed bag but a few are really great and for people who don't know Waits, it's quite a shock that this guy has been writing and singing since the early 70's and still has so much creative energy. My teen kids where blown away by one of a black and whites from the 70's of him doing Heart Attack and Vine, complete with cigarette, booze and neck veins. My daughter thought that was about the coolest thing she'd ever seen.
