I work in an office which (like many others) uses copiers. We regularly get calls from people we’ve dubbed “Toner Pirates”. Here’s how they operate – they call and act like your best friend as they tell you they are the ones who supply your company with toner, and they just need to verify the model number. An unwitting person goes along, and before they know what hit them, they’re receiving toner at MSRP pricing along with a bill (how these people can operate legally is beyond me). They’ve taken telemarketing to a whole new level by tricking people.

I’m on to their game, and when I get one of the calls, I give the person a fake model number and laugh when they can’t find it. I then tell them to get a real job and hang up. Today when I got one of these calls I told the woman “No, you won’t find that model number, you’re a toner pirate & you suck”. In my mind she rates below a telemarketer (which I can’t STAND) and she should expect to get some bitter people on the other end of one of her calls.

Well, about 10 seconds later, the phone rings, I pick it up and it’s her again. She says to me (and I quote) “You need to find a guy to suck your ****, you sound really gay on the phone” and promptly hangs up. My co-workers are standing around, and ask me what she said. When I tell them, we all had the  look on our faces. I’ve had these people call me “jerk” after realizing I was messing with them, but after 10 years I’ve NEVER had anyone call me back & say something so egregious. I really hoped it wasn’t long after that that she was being walked out the front door. I can’t imagine such an action being tolerated in any business, even one as shady as this.

WOW.. thats insane.. She probably had to sell you to hit a number and was getting canned anyway... That's a bit ridiculous though. Devils advocate: You should probably refrain from saying "you suck"... I know they shouldnt do what they do, but she's just trying to earn a living. I'm in now way comparing you to her, but whats wrong with politely saying "no thank you"?

Most of the time I just hang up once they start their spiel, but I understand what you’re saying. I get very annoyed with sales calls in general, but these people are scammers plain & simple, so I do what I can by making their job crappy, hoping they’ll get the hint & get a real job.
What this woman did should be grounds for dismissal from ANY company.

I like to just ask them to hold for a second. Then I put them on hold and leave them there.
I've been a Purchasing Manager for 10 years, and have been in Purchasing for over 20 years. There seems to be no end to the types of sales pitches people come up with.

I'm sorry, but thats just not right... I'd be more than happy to give the owner or manager a piece of my mind, but the people working that job just need to make ends meet, nope. The turnover for those jobs is extremely high and most of the "sales" team move on. At least she's out there working... To say another person trying to better themselves doesnt deserve some simple human decency is shameful. I just think its better to assume the best in a person.. obviously this broad didnt deserve much, but the worst was brought out of her...

This is my preferred method of dealing with these types of calls. Their business model is based on making as many calls as possible in a given time frame. When you use up one of their lackey’s time it hurts them financially. I once had someone hold for over 15 minutes...but most are usually gone in 5.

If it makes you feel any better, she probably was walked out shortly after.

I did telemarketing for like two weeks in college before I quit. There is a call back button in case you accidentally get disconnected from a potential sale. I saw a kid do exactly what you described, and he was gone before the system could assign him his next call.

I disagree. If I walk into a retail store, I expect to be approached by a salesperson. When you call me out of the blue & unsolicited – you take what you get. You’re infringing on MY time, at work or at home, and I have every right to tell you off if I so choose. Compound that by the fact that these pirates know they’re scamming people, and they richly deserve whatever I can dish out.

I think the next time I get one of these calls, I’m going to play along – give them all the real information and let them send me the toner. When the bill comes, I’ll refuse to pay it. When they threaten to take legal action, I’ll say “bring it on, I’d love to see you explain your business to a judge, jury & the press”.

Is that honestly worth your time? At the end of the day, aren't you better just saying "f-off", hanging up the phone, and moving on with your life? You must have more important things to do (e.g. posting on AH, upgrading your system, looking at porn :D).

Hey, I get it... I'm not saying they're right, or even ok... thats not the point. I just like to choose high road over high horse. Sometimes its okay to treat somebody better than they deserve... I get sales calls all the time. I always respect them and 9 times out of 10 I get the same respect in return.

And arent you even better off being nice to the guy so as not to get worked up and ruin his day as well? You're no better than he is at the moment you disrespect him...

We went through this with one toner scammer. They eventually sent us pre-paid call tags to return them. It was cool, we had saved them.
