They offer free inhome trials so when someone doesnt want an item it goes back into the b stock stuff. Just means someone played with it and sent it back. But svs tests everything.

I would create a separate thread in the subwoofer section or maybe try to private message with @shadyJ

He has heard most of these subs.

I have HSU VTF2 subs. One of those would work well in your apartment.

U said u have a sub right now. If you are really down about that decision tho, see if you can still get the deal, or check out Hsu. I was super close on Hsu too. Like ready to get in the car and drive 6 hours to avoid shipping close! But seriously. be patient.

The monoliths are solid. check out the review here at audioholics. Still not piano black, but subs are meant to be FELT, not seen. OR... chill for a minute and consider the future:

Get your bookshelves and put them through their paces. Decide if that's what you want up front right now... if not, can you do the towers? If those don't hit for you, Lawdy, U gon need to go 12-step'n at Audioholics Anon.

Drunk Penguin did have the right of it though... by the numbers, you should be OK with the center+ those bookshelves or towers, but power will become a little bit of a concern soon. They both should operate at 20W just fine, but will want more juice to really open up I expect. If I remember your AVR right, it should have the juice to get them up near reference level. And you already expressed concern about getting too loud. so...

Likewise, subs are very sensitive to room size. Invest heavily now and you might not have the output you'll need in a larger room... unless you roll the dice on the future needs. In which case, check out this and don't look back. :p

Dig? Get your books, see if they work for you now. If not, do the towers. Save up for the right AVR...
And research them! Sony, Denon, Onkyo... Worry about buying in 6-8 months. Then get your next upgrade at Black Friday next year. The more you learn now, the better decisions you'll make going forward!

Cheers! And I hope you enjoy those. They should do you right for many years to come if you upgrade smartly!

(Just to share, I'm ordering standmouts as my mains until my towers come in around 5 mos. then my standmounts become my surrounds. ;) )

Just an update...I got a PB12-NSD from SVS. They had a few more left and I jumped on one.

I currently use Raptor 16 AWG wires from car audio. Should get something else? Suggestions for stands? Thank you all so much!

If your going to start updating everything, you might as well start with everything, too! ;)

I picked up Monoprice Choice Series 12AWG. Its affordable. It conducts.
Check them out for a subwoofer cable, too. Likewise, if you decide you want to put banana plugs on your wires, their Affinity Series is the way to go, and they offer rt angle banana plugs if theres tight spaces. All affordable and should be easy to get.

If the runs are short to medium, 14 AWG wire. For long runs 12 AWG wire is recommended but 14 AWG will be ok.

If you go to the ATI Amplifiers website, they indicate that 16 AWG size is sufficient for lengths up to 20 feet. But we have to take into account the impedance of the speaker to be driven. I partially agree with ATI as this is good for an 8 ohm speaker only. The distance would have to be half that length for a 4 ohm speaker. We have to limit the resistance of the speaker wire to a certain percentage of the speaker's impedance.

But most of us prefer to use at least a minimum of 14 gauge because it suits most home installations. However, if someone is using 4 ohm speakers, he can use 14 AWG wire up to a distance of 16 feet and 12 AWG cable up to 25 feet. Also, If you connect two conductors in parallel, this reduces resistance by 50% enabling lengths to be doubled.

Prime speakers. That’s my old DCM sub. PB12 and center will be here tomorrow.

Sweet. I hope you are able to make good friends with your new rig. By all accounts, you're on the right path.

Next upgrade, Prime towers and an AVR? 1 More sub next black Friday? ;) If you plan right, your little cubes will do great work for building out Atmos if you choose to go that far... at least you got 'em... might as well use 'em!

Well didn’t we decide above that the bookshelves made the most sadness, hence my decision?

Does it seem normal to have the LF/RF sounding weird when they’re the only speakers hooked up?

Totally makes sense. I think you made the right call!

What do you mean by sounding weird? Or is that an auto-correct typo? ;)

Seems like audio is intermittently going between the two when I turn on music. Fading in and out too. Could that mean my receiver isn’t powering them? All is wired in parallel. I had to turn volume up to about -20 and it was still pretty quiet

You still in a multi-ch mode? Did you re-calibrate the avr for the new speakers?

I would unplug all speakers except the front 2 and see if the issue resolves before adding the rest one by one. Normal wiring. One speaker per speaker terminal pair on the receiver.

The old cube speakers might not be 8 ohm? If they are specific to running through that little sub, then you might not be able to use them as direct wired surrounds. What model are they?

In the past my fronts were wired to the sub. I only had the two speakers hooked up. Nothing else.

Receiver is Yamaha RX-V365.

Some home theater in a box sets wire through the sub at like 2ohms to use the sub ‘s internal amp. Wiring a 2 ohm speaker directly to a 8ohm receiver will not work. It is too much load on the receiver to do that. That is why I was asking.

So that’s what I had to do. How do I figure out if all is comparable?

Your receiver shouldn't have an issue with the Prime bookshelves. You disconnected the old HTIB speakers except for the two primes I thought? When you say in parallel what do you mean? You hooked up the front left speaker to the front left terminal on the receiver, and likewise the front right speaker to the front right terminal on the receiver?
