Towers or cubes? What about bookshelves (or if you prefer, stand mounts) instead of cubes?
Yes I mean bookshelves on stands. Since I have the sub it no longer makes sense to get towers, correct? Since we were talking about towers before, any recommendations on bookshelves?

Seriously, I have no life.
Hi all! I recently bought a 65” Sony 900F tv and think I want to upgrade my home theatre setup. I’m currently running a Yamaha receiver with DCM cube speakers. They are ‘ok’ but I feel like I can’t really use the sub because I don’t want to disturb my neighbors and the cubes aren’t full sounding enough.

Upon going to Best Buy they’re recommending I first upgrade my front two speakers with DT 9040s and then get the CS9040. I can get them for $225 off with Black Friday. Would this be a good option or is there something with better value? Would you recommend going a different route? I am very open to options and my budget can stretch to coffee the Definitive Tech stuff, it’s a matter of it’s a damn good deal now, but I can’t find much info on them. Any help would be very much appreciated!

If you have other stores near you, I would suggest going there- never been inpressed by the staff at Best Buy or Magnolia.

Where are you located?

All speakers in an HT setup will benefit from a subwoofer. Including big 3-way towers. And now that you did that, plan on buying a second next black friday! Always match your subs up in a dual sub system. There are ways around it, but it takes a lot more experience than I have to solve those issues. Alas, I digress.

My previous advice stands. Listen before you jump.

Your value of buying small now against perhaps being in a larger space in another year can still work. Buy Standmounts and Center now, use your cubes as surrounds. Buy matching towers after you move. Or buy towers and matching center now, use your cubes and expand later.

Use magnolia to go hear stuff. Find other local audio stores if that is an option. Look at Crutchfield, they can be a great source, with a much larger selection than BB/Magnolia. If you are remotely interested in the ID companies, call and talk to them. Look at reviews online where you can, but remember, those are all subjective, but maybe can help you find the direction you want. ;)

I use subs with towers in my main setup but in a larger room than yours, but bookshelves worked quite well before that. I use those bookshelves in my much smaller bedroom now, which are Ascend Sierra-1s (with NrT tweeters, altho nowadays I'd look at the Sierra-2s with Raal tweeters). For your remaining budget I'd also consider Philharmonic Affordable Accuracy speakers. As has been mentioned, you could concentrate on the front three alone and move your cubes to surrounds. Just depends where you want to spend your money to an extent.

solid choice... good start. if you don;t like the books as your mains, you can always return and try the towers, too. ;) the books are probably a pretty good step up from the cubes!

Nice choices! Do you have any budget left for a receiver?

I have a Yamaha 5 channel I’m going to run for now. Really kicking myself for canceling my subwoofer order. Thoughts on the PB1000 for $499?

If you go SVS call them and you should be able to get a discount. They have a returning customer discount of 10% I think. Something like that. Theyll work with ya.

Correction, 5%.

From an email I got from SVS a while back.

"Good to hear from you! We offer a 5% return customer discount that applies to new and outlet items. Let us know when you're ready to order and we'll send you a coupon code. "

SB12-NSD $399.99
SB-2000 piano black $649 from outlet where I got speakers...no blemish
SB-1000 piano black $549 from outlet

Suggestions?

Is outlet stuff ok? The guy I talked to say no blemishes or anything...same as new, but idk why it’s in the outlet.

Outlets are fine. I bought an open box sub that had been discontinued and they still gave me a 5 year warranty on it. Svs is very easy to work with if u ever need a repair too.

Excellent! Any suggestions on an SVS sub? Or do I wait it out? Amazon says they will be getting in the SVS PB12-NSD but idk. One issue is it’s not piano black and I ordered piano black. Not sure if that’s a big deal tho.
