Here's whats going on in my area. I live in what is known as the RV capital of the world. Mobile homes, travel trailers, converted vans, double wides are all made in this area. This area took a big hit when the economy went south and more than rv manufacturers felt the pain. All the chain of supply companies, restaurants, retailers were affected. And this started, here anyway, in 2007.
About two years ago, we started to have a slight upswing. Mostly in manufacturing and retail. A few companies started to hire and would have lines around the block. 1000 people applying for 5-10 positions. What happened in the rv factories is they were hand picking the most qualified people but treating them like sh!t. If they complained, "There's the door, don't let it hit you in the a$$ on the way out". They had so many applicants they could get away with it. Other people were told they were over qualified and not hired.
People can take only so much before they stop bending over. I think those experiences are why some people are taking advantage of unemployment benefit extensions.
