How to switch between 5.2.4 and 7.2.2

I have Yamaha rx-a2050. I have speakers to test and hooked up the following, fr, fl, center, sl, sr, and 2 rear speakers. This should be 7.2.2.

When I try the receiver it shows it hooked up as 5.2.4 (pcm) and the rear speakers do not play.

Is their a setting on the receiver I need to change?

The bdp needs to be set to bitstream so the avr can decode the codec. Pcm is decoded in the bdp and sent to the avr.

Not sure I’m following you. I think that’s only 7.x
Or do you have more speakers hooked up but not listed?

In setup menu, manual speaker setup, unselect the rear presence speakers and select the surround back speakers.

This too.
But Doesn’t the first post only list 7 speakers? I’m trying to figure out exactly what he’s doing. I MAY need more coffee though so...

You are describing 7.2.0. Do you have atmos or no? Rear speakers wont play unless the sound track is encoded for it which most are not. You can turn on one of the upmix modes like dolby atmos or dts neural x to mix the rears in.

Thank you everyone. Sorry I did not list my subwoofers. @snakeeyes thank you much. This solved my issue. I was trying for an hour last night but didn't realize I had to disable the rear pressence speakers!

We have basically the same AVR. 2050 and 2060 are almost identical. My room is small enough to try 5.1.4. Right now I have just 5.1

I’m hearing from a few members here that 5.1.4 may be a better setup than 7.1.2. Just letting you know.

Atmos is pretty cool. I highly suggest anyone with the ability to go for it.

I was thinking same. So if I wire 5.1.4 then I would hook up the back two ceiling speakers to the rear pressence output?

If this is correct, where would the sound which normally goes to the surround rear speakers be output to?

Yes. It would be mixed in with the side surround speakers.

I guess it would just not be there. I've had a 7.2 system for many many years. I recently went to 7.2.4 and the 4 atmos speakers create a much better surround sound environment. Now that I've heard it, if I had to I would go 5.2.4 before I ever went back to 7.2

Actually the Yamaha can be made to do 7.1 by default regardless of the DSP program mode. Even in Straight mode all 7 speakers can be used without any need to use the Dolby/Dts up mixers. This is done with the Virtual setting. It is only in Direct mode where the Yamaha will only use the speakers present in the codec, ie mono, stereo, etc..

Ensure the speakers are connected to the correct speaker terminals. Do this with the Receiver turned off. Turn the AVR on and then you need to set up the speakers correctly. This done through the Setup menu, Setup, Manual Setup and then Configuration. Ensure the FL, C, FR, SL, SR, BSL, BSR are all set to preferably to small along with a crossover, the Subwoofer 1/2 are set and that the distances, levels are set for all speakers. Ensure the Presence, front and rear are set to disabled, if you do hot have them wired up, otherwise same as for the normal speakers. If you wish you can run the YPAO automatic setup after this, although this will likely change the speaker sizes, distance and levels. There is also a Layout section which can adjust the Surround and presence speaker types. Use the Test Tone to make sure all the speakers are playing correctly. The Volume control still works here so make sure to adjust this if required.

It is room dependent upon how accurate the Distances and level are guesstimated by the YPAO. Once the Automatic setup has been run you can go back into the menus and manually re-adjust the values using a tape measure and a SPL meter as needed. If YPAO is enabled this should not affect the Parametric EQ settings. It is best to avoid this section for manual configurations unless you know what you are adjusting.

The Yamaha RX 2050 is a 9.2 amp in that it can drive, without additional amplification, upto 7.2.2/5.2.4. For 7.2.4 you would need an additional stereo amp if this is possible. It is hard to tell without reading the manual as there are no pre-outs for the presence speakers, just zone 2 and 3.

Hmm on my 2060 it can’t process 7.2.4 and there are no preouts for the front presence or the rear presence speakers. The 2050 looks to be the same situation.
The use of virtual back speakers is more confusing. I think they would just be projected like a phantom speaker perhaps? I haven’t played with this feature.

What does bdp stand for? And/or where would I changes this?
Sorry about that! I meant blu disk player. Somewhere in the output settings. Sorry i can’t say off hand since every unit is different.

Good advice here. I would only say that I might not recommend changing the distance values set by ypao. The avr sees the room acoustically and basically it’s setting the proper delay and the “distance” is just to give humans something to quantify.

In short, the sounds will get folded into the appropriate speakers that are available. And yeah, there’s no reason to go backwards to a channel based system imo. 5.x.4 is Super amazing and it’s not that hard to get right. Despite the thinking that Dolby’s recommendations have to be followed to a TEE, it’s not really like that. However I don’t believe for example, DTS’s claims that make it sound like you can put speakers “anywhere” and have a great experience.
Btw, I’ve never complimented your room. It’s very well done. And of course if you recall I’m a fan of PC subwoofers!

I also was confused if i could use an external amp to accomplish 7.2.4 with the 2050. I've attached a page from the manual. It seems i can use an external amp for the fronts maybe? Then use the 2050 for the rest? Or am i missing something.
