How do I get more bass?

I was thinking - could it be the a problem with a receiver? I was just watching Superman Returns on DVD and the rumbling is there. Not the super, house rocking, windows rattling type of sound but the sub is worker hard. However, when people speak or when doors close, it sounds like there's something missing in the bottom-end. I recognize that as a problem the occured when I had the PSBs up front as well. I'm very temped to blame it on the AVR right now!

What you need is a better sub, and a better room. (most any room is fixable)

I'm not going to be the one to tell you that your 65 watt 10" sub isn't going to give you dramatic bass for movies, well...yes I am.

Well, I had a friend come over. He says that it's not really the subwoofer that's causing the problem. Apparently the sub is lacking low low base (i.e. shaking the room). But he thinks the sound that is missing is midrange sound.

One of the scenes I tested was LoTR Part 2 during the battle at the wall. When someone gets kicked or falls over, there is no thump at all. It's completely missing. You hear a clank of the armor and that's it. But with the footsteps of the army, you can hear the rumble from the sub.

My buddy couldn't figure out what was wrong and is thinking it's either AVR (as in it's busted) or the room has major cancellation issues.

The other thing is that when we tried changing the crossover from 80, 100 and 120, there isn't much of a difference either. We tried changing all the settings -small, large, LFE, LFE+Main....

I think the next thing I'm going to try is to have someone bring over another AVR and see if that's the problem. If that doesn't work, then have someone bring a bigger sub to see if it fixes it.....or move my equipment to test in a smaller room with carpet.

Hmmmm.. any suggestions? Having another set of ears hearing the sound and hearing the same thing as me makes me want to shift the blame away from the puny sub.

Try moving the sub around in the room. That will change the cancelation issues if there are any. Also, I would recommend running test tones rather than a movie to test this. Check out hometheatershack.com and get room eq wizard. Its free and easy to use. It helped me diagnose and fix my subwoofer placement problems.

Hmmmmmm... I just tried running the same scene on my computer's 5.1 system. I think you guys are right! It probably is the sub. I tested the same scene with the sub on and off and with sub only halfway up.

It should be the sub as my feet are on that sucker (10" and used as a foot rest) and definitely is waaaay better with it. I guess that thump is sub range and the reinforcement of the voices is coming from the sub as well...jeez..you guys are a bit too smart for your own good.
