I'm not afraid to admit it, I'm a big fan of Wham!. George Michael has an amazing voice. I pretty much have all the Wham! CDs, starting from "Fantastic", and even managed to get hold of Wham! "Make it big" in SACD (Stereo only). I did, and still do, enjoy very much Tears for Fears. I got out of high school in 1984. The '80s were one of the most prolific decades musically speaking. I long for the MTV of those years when it was music videos all day, now I have to put up with that reality show crap, and Flavor Flave!!!!!!! What a waste of time.
I don't know if anybody here is from South America, but the 80's was the the decade when the Latin Rock (rock latino) became a huge phenonemon, with artist like Soda Stereo, Charly Garcia and Pedro Aznar, Virus, La Ley, Los Prisioneros, Miguel Mateos amomg others.

Are you guys gonna force me to get out my "Man's Handbook" to quote the chapter and verse concerning this stuff?

"A previous girlfriend, who happened to be a (SELECT ONE: Supermodel or Centerfold), left them at my apartment before I dumped her and told her to get out"

No further excuse needed

LOL....WHAM/TFF....HeHeHe.....c'mon man!! You're killing me here!! I could have forgiven you if you were like...ummmm....like 10-13 at the time(or a girl).:p Don't get me wrong because today I am as much of a sucker for most 80's music as the next guy who grew up in that era, but back then when the music was new.......I had my standards. LOL

With that said, his tribute to Freddy Mercury with Queen was outstanding!!! Freddy had an amazing voice.......and I'm not sure if anyone could have pulled it off as well as George. His version of "Somebody to Love" was incredible.

And.....oh yes........Queen.....WOW....did they have some good music:cool:

I'm sure Darien will be shocked to know Queen was also one of my favorite bands growing up;)

Now THAT was music!!

PS....I was class of '86.

Ok, I'll concede that did happen back then. If the majority of your friends didn't think it was cool enough you didn't go along with it either. I didn't care for WHAM or George Michael but every once in a while I hear the song 'Careless Whisper' on the radio and I think I need to get that...someday (no rush :))

That's ok buddy!!!!. I don't mind getting tagged for my tastes:D. You're right about GM singing "Somebody to Love", but a song that really stands out for me is his performance of "The Longing and Winding Road" in the Linda Mccartney Tribute, now that was awesome!!!!. Anyway,it's all about personal tastes and preferences.

My favorite Wham! song it's called "Like A Baby", from the "Make It Big" CD. And on the subject of George Michael, his video "I Want Your Sex", had this amazing oriental girl, Kathy Jeung, man!!!!!, I had a crush on her:D, she was so hot!!!!!

Would you like a scoop of WHAM to go with [Depeche Mode]...?
How can you possibly compare Depeche Mode to the likes of Wham? They're at totally opposite ends of the music spectrum (in terms of 'darkness/moodiness').

I've been thinking about the whole notion of so-called 'chick music' and I have to laugh. Such a thing cannot exist if you think about it. Music transcends gender.

Buckeye Nut wrote that those of us who grew up during the period of Michael Jackson, Wham and others would never have admitted to liking them at that time. This I'll grant you. However, that does not equate the music to so-called 'chick music'; it simply means that we were too insecure to admit that actually, we did like some of the songs.

Come on! I don't care how macho-man you thought you were in 80's, who couldn't like cute little Boy George!!!.......LOL!!!!!:D:D:D The first time I saw his video, I was at my girlfriend's house, I swore he was a chick! In fact he looked like my girlfriend's brother girlfriend. Every time I would see the girl I'd start laughing uncontrollably.

HeHe....I can see it now......

It's 1985 at Highlanders HS:

The HS football team is in the weight room pumping iron.......while cranking "Lets Get Physical" by Olivia Newton John, and "Like A Virgin" by Madonna.

After the workout, they hop in their cars and pop in their favorite WHAM cassette for the trip home.

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha....................

I just couldn't care less if the guy looked like a chic, or whatever personal style he (she) may have, I was hooked on the music. I didn't buy a CD to look at the pictures of Wham! or Culture Club, I just wanted to listen to their music. Now if I had George Michael's poster hanging on the wall of my bedroom, well that's something else ;), but I swear I didn't:D

"Do you really want to hurt me......" LOL!!!!:D:D I'm sorry I shouldn't be laughing! Caupina I hope you really didn't have a poster of Boy hanging in your room!:D:D Look ,the 80s weren't bad, look at some of the good stuff that ZZ Top did and Billy Idol and a whole bunch of bands that you can start a new thread about, but George Michael and Boy George were out picking daisies. :D:D LOL!!!! BTW, "Dude look like a lady" by Aerosmith, good song.

To get back to the original question, my first CD is the same title as my first vinyl LP: The Singles by The Carpenters.

First of all...... are you even old enough to know who the MJ fan base was back in the early-mid 80s? Were you even born yet???

Secondly........Michael Jackson was, in fact, girls (or nerdy guy) music.

Hmmm.....based on your comment, if you were old enough to have lived through the era(beyond wearing diapers)..........I'd guess your other favorites were WHAM, Tears For Fears, Madonna, & Flock of Seagulls? ;)
Maybe where YOU live Buckeye, guys were too busy chewing tobacco and trying to be macho to be able to honestly listen to music, but where I grew up, most people were pretty open-minded. You don't even know me dude, so don't try to accuse me of being a kid. I graduated high school in 1987, so that will tell you my age group.

And HELL YEAH I liked Madonna, (smokin' hot back then), Flock of Seagulls, Tears For Fears, and Wham! Here are some of my favorite groups back then, in no particular order:

Prince
The Time
Jesse Johnson
Charlie Singleton
Def Leppard
Cinderella
Motley Crue
Ozzy
Whitesnake
Quiet Riot
Depeche Mode
The Cure
INXS
DEVO
The Fixx
Lisa Lisa
Club Nouveau
LL Cool J

There are TONS more, but those are the first to pop in my head.
