I can't be sure since it was a long time ago (close to 25 years), but it was probably Dark Side of the Moon since that one had been a favorite for many years before the CD was invented. Also, since it was a benchmark in terms of recording, it stood to benefit in an obvious way from the massive improvement in sound quality that CD offered compared to vinyl.
I owned one of the first Sony CD Walkmans. I loved carrying it with me to freind's houses and blowing their minds by connecting it to their stereos.

Better get rid of it, then. You don't want Bush's right-wing gestapo kicking down your door.:p (They don't care how many years ago it was.)

I was racking my brain over this one becuase I wasn't sure what it was. I am fairly certain now that my first CD was the double disc 1984 from New Order. I was still buying vinyl in those days too though because most releases came out on vinyl first...

Why isn't this in the music section? I don't care how short your skirt is, play by the rules.

Strictly speaking, you can place anything from any of the other forums in The Steam Vent. In truth I did consider posting in the Musical Goodness forum but didn't think it applicable since it's not about new music per se.

My 'skirt' is the right length. :)

The first CD I bought was Michael Jackson Bad...

Buckle I hate you now for making a thread where I had to admit that. :D

Dear all,

I thought it might be interesting to see what the first CD you ever bought was - if you can remember, that is - and if there's any story that accompanies it.

My first CD was the motion picture soundtrack to Flashdance (even though I hadn't yet seen the film). :D

I have to admit that there's not much of a story accompanying buying it, but I do remember looking again and again at the disc and being amazed by the technology that was able to create such a fantastically minute track, and by the play of colours that was, it seemed to me, inherently right as a (unforseen?) by-product of the manufacturing process; a feeling that has never faded with time even though we can so easily surpass CD technology nowadays.
Well the first CD I brought was “STAR TREK VI The Undiscovered Country” by (Cliff Eidelman) and I saw it the cinema before I brought the CD at the world’s famous Empire Leicester square. The score sounded better in 70mm Dolby stereo sic-track THX. I guess it was around February 1992.

I think it was either UB40 "Labour of Love" or Metallica's "Black".

What was your first CD Joe, "Karl Marx' Books on Tape"?
No, that would be at the left extreme. I don't like extremes, and prefer the middle.
I can tolerate Republicans when, unlike Bush, they are moderate.

Least you could have done was say an ex-girlfriend, who happened to be a super model at the time, made you buy it for her. I know this is in the "Man's Handbook" somewhere. ;)

That's exactly what happened Major! Do I know you from somewhere? weird. ;)
Guess I'm a looser too. I will fess up though and say the MJ discs... I had 3, GO AHEAD AND LAUGH!!! (more) were some of my reference material at the time because few other discs had such excellent recording. OK, back to laughing at me... Hey at least no one has given me bad rep yet for admitting to buying MJ discs.

I currently have Bad, Thriller, and Dangerous. All three have some great songs on them and great production values as well. There is a reason they were massive hits.
Sure MJ is weird, but that doesn't mean he isn't a great performer. (Besides, I can't imagine anybody growing up the way he did and not turning out weird. He never had a chance to be "normal", whatever that means.:()

First CD purchase?? HeHeHe

I'm surprised that anyone over the age of 35 can answer this question. All I remember is that my first CD player was purchased either late'83-early'84, so whatever first CD I purchased....it was then.;)

You know in my case I do remember because I keep an inventory on all the Cds, DVDs, VHS, LD that I have bought along the years, so whenever I buy a CD, I number it, it happens "Faith" got the number 1. I remember the date too, 'cause how can I forget when I was introduced to the amazing world of hi-fi sound. Buying that Kenwood stereo changed my world and just couldn't stop from there.:D

Sweeeeeeet!!!

I can relate because I'm equally anal as it relates to my golf record. I have logged every single round, where I played, what I shot, weather conditions, birdie/eagle count, and who I played with(if it was somebody worth noting) since January 1, 1993. HeHeHeHe....

PS...it's not really that difficult. Every year since 1993 I get a golf themed calender, and I make the brief entries under each date I played. My stack of saved calenders keeps getting bigger and bigger!!!;) I keep them in my golf themed bathroom, and it's kinda fun sometimes to scan through them wile taking care of business. It's pretty cool how such brief information can make you recall the majority of them. Ya know.... I read the entry from June17th, 1995...and it's like...."oh yea, that was a fun day!!"

Post, Post script...... During my years away at college, I saved every CD receipt and slipped it inside the CD cover. Nowdays.......whenever I happen to stumble onto one of those old CD's and see that dated receipt, it kinda gives me the nostalgic warm/fuzzies in a fun kind of way.

I don't keep my receipts, but I do keep my ticket stubs for movies, kind of like concert tickets, that I really liked and then stick them in the DVD case when I buy them. Of note, I saw The Crow on opening night, Friday the 13th...whatever year that was, and I still have the stub. Receipts is going a little far.....
