Beautiful Cogan 1911, I'll bet that's a dream to shoot. Nothing really satisfies like a silky smooth 1911. I'm having a new Fusion 1911 in 10mm built right now, can't wait to get it and post up some pics.

So why ported in a service size 40cal? I wouldn't mind having my Glock 29, compact 10mm, ported ... but the bigger frame in 40 I can't imagine it making much difference other than being louder and throwing crap in your face. Just wondering why you went that route.
You know it's funny you ask that. I've always owned compensated guns from day one. My first gun was a Springfield Armory 1911 in .45 that was fully compensated and ready to compete with. When I was in college, I did a lot of competitive shooting. I was never really good since I don't have the best eyesight, but I really loved the whole scene. I've always had different custom guns... no reason really other than that's what I was used to. When I wanted a new gun, I just always went to the people I knew and they'd build me something. The comp makes a night and day difference on the carry 45 I have in the pic.

For the XD though, I didn't really put a lot of thought into it. I knew I wanted a .40... I find that to be the better rounds here in FL. My brother in law kept telling me how much he loved his XD 9mm so one day I just went to the local shop to pick one up. It fit perfect in my hand and they had it in 9mm and .40 (.45 was not out yet) The one they had was ported and I never gave it a second thought because that's what I always owned... a comped or ported gun.

Looking back, I'd probably not get the ported .40. I've since shot several non-ported XD .40's and I will say that the ported model is smoother and in sequencial shoots, say 3-5 round bursts, the groupings tend to be about half the size than when I shoot the same with the non-ported model. There's no doubt about ithe benefit, but bear in mind that I don't get to the range nearly as much as I used to or would like and I'm quite certain that anyone used to their non=ported model would shoot just as well as I and probably better. The downside of course is port flash and debris that booger up your sights after 35-40 rounds. In reality though, this is only an issue at the range. The muzzle flash doesn't seem to bother me at all and I've done several night shooting outings, but others have complained about it in discussion groups. Oddly enough, I don't find it louder than the non-ported model. It sound different... has more of a clapping bang as opposed to a thunder bang... if that makes any sense, but it's a fine gun.

I'm looking at a couple of Kimbers, the CCWII I think.. .the carry gun with the black frame and polished slide. I've had the opportunity to fire the gun and it's a dream. I just feel a lot more comfortable carrying a gun with a manual safety. Iv'e just always trained to drop the safety on draw. I know you always keep your booger finger off the trigger, but in the event of some kind of sudden conflict where you need to pull your gun quickly in a panic situation, few folks can get the amount and type of training to react in such a way to ensure you don't grasp at the gun and hit that trigger. In fact, I've read several report of officers discharging both Glocks and XD's in that very scenario and I believe SA is makeing an XD with manual safety as an option.

Great thread. I wonder if we're driving Gene nuts. ;)

Here is what was once my pride and joy...gifted to me by the late Col. Jeff Cooper, founder of Gunsite Ranch and the modern pistol technique. It's a first run, low #, highly modded piece presented to Jeff by AMT.

Financial conditions forced me to sell it last year, with Jeff's permission, just before he passed. He was a GREAT man of honor and leadership. 2 lb. trigger pull, once went full auto on me.

Here is my current carry piece. Not so exotic, but also useful for the missus, too, and affordable.

Is everyone else noticing empty gun/ammo shelves at your local stores?

Hey guys, check this one out! I've been awufully busy lately, but wanted to post this build I just finished up. It's an AR-15 with lots of goodies, and chambered in 6.8 SPC. I just shot it for the first time today actually, man does it run smooth!

The camo job was done with a product called Duracoat, and stencils from Bulldog Arms. All the colors are custom, it's a mix of ACU and Urban digital camo ... I guess you could call it Suburban Digital.

Noveske 16.1" barrel with SPC II chamber
MSTN Quiet Control muzzle break
Geiselle Combat Trigger, RRA parts kit
RRA lower, Mega Upper
LMT Enhanced bolt and YHM NM carrier
M93B Stock, Enidine buffer and Wolff extra power spring
VTAC Gen1 forearm
GRSC Combat Scope not in the pics

There is a guy on Pirate4x4.com that does custom prints using the Duracoat, very cool idea! He even did a hot pink finish for his lady friend.:p

Used to do IPSC as well. I have a fairly good collection but need some more.

Here's the dumb "tacticool" picture I took awhile ago, I rarely ever use the vest unless training.

Then some other stuff.

Springfield XDs are fantastic. I own a 9mm XD, and it is a fantastic shooter. In my opinion, they are a direct competator to Glock. They follow the same basic design (i.e. hammerless, trigger safety, etc.) but they are FAR more comfortable to hold. I find them very accurate, and 100% dependable. There is about 1000 rounds through my XD9 and havent' seen a single failure, just like my sigs. That, and the XD line is very affordable. If you like a double action only, hammerless pistol, the XD line is a fantastic choice.

The only downside to the XD, are their triggers. Some of the trigger snobs consider them to have only a so-so trigger, but mine feels just fine. Just something you have to get used to if you shoot different pistols.

How do people here feel about the Springfield XD?
I have a ported XD 40 and love it. It's a very fine gun that I personally feel is superior to Glock... for me. The Glocks just have never felt right in my hand.

The XD I have is used my primary home defense gun outfitted with a tactical light mounted on the integrated rail. The only think I don't like about it is that it does not have a manual safety which makes me a bit uncomfortable in a carry situation. For me, I've almost exclusively owned custom 1911's and have just always trained to disengage the safety on draw. It's a personal comfort thing so I certainly wouldn't let that disuade you from an XD as a carry gun as many many many people do find it to be outstanding. I do carry it, but my comfort level is better served by one of my 1911's.

XD's are no-brainers ... great guns. But then again there are TONS of great poly handguns on the market right now. I have a XD45 Service size, it's totally reliable and does fit most hands better than Glocks. If Springfield would make one in 10mm I could sell my Glock 29!

But ... I like the Smith M&P's even better than XD's. And I like my HK45 better than the M&P, haha. So I guess what I'm really hoping for is a HK in 10mm :p

If you've trained carrying a 1911 then I'd imagine your comfort level would be sticking with one. But if you're a beginning shooter looking for something to carry, most find the DA only striker fire guns like Glocks and XD's easier to draw and operate with confidence.

I had a compact 9mm Smith M&P and I could not get it to fit comfortable in my hand, even with the mag extension. Ended up trading it in for my Kimber.

A Kimber is my next 1911. I've gone back and forth between Kimber and Wilson Combat. For the money, I think it's hard to beat a Kimber. I'm looking at the CQW which has the black frame and stainless slide. It's a great gun and it looks as good as it shoots and their service is 2nd to none from what I'm told.

I had the same problem with the M&P. I tried the different back straps and just couldn't get that "nestled" feeling.

SpkrBldr brings up a good point. One thing that I think about though is a panic situation. Yes... RULE 1 - keep your booger finger off the trigger. The problem though is that few have, know to, or can take the time to adeequately train. I think it's just impossible for most to get the movement that ingrained that the they could never mistakenly grasp the handgun and not automatically position the trigger finger on the trigger in an absolute panic situation where your frantically grasping for the gun.

Now at the same time... that situation is very rare and it's likely a manual safetey could be it's own detriment in it's own right. It's a tough call.
