The biggest factor in choosing speakers for me was getting my wife's approval. She prefered in wall speakers but we are moving in a few years so she gave the go ahead for floor standing models. In all it is all up to her. thanks.

If we only consider aesthetics, and not sound, hidden in the wall/celling is better for me. I like the look of clean uncluttered lines.

There is also nothing for the kids to topple over, nothing to dust or sweep around, etc. The disadvantage is obviously sound and difficulty of installation.

Monitors or bookshelf speakers in a wood grain would work best for my situation. Matching our new entertainment wall, and being unobtrusive. But, having plenty of sound for my medium sized room. First and formost they have to sound good, and my wife isn't too concerned on the speakers now that she got to pick out the TV stand and the audio piers!:D

speaker look

I have an entertainment center that I built myself therefore I must use bookshelf speakers in black to work in the room. Ideally, I would have a much larger room and use floor standers.

floorstanders, wood finish... because that's what i have and i think they look damn cool.

my wife would probably answer in-wall... but i'm of the opinion that even the best in-walls seriously compromise sound quality.

In-walls will allow you to construct an eligant HT which will amaze the listener because everything is hidden. They also rank high on the spouse approval scale (SAS).:D Unfortunately, I don't want to compromise on the sound quality and I don't have unlimited funds for a really high end in-wall system ($15,000+). So I'm going with some Axioms (floorstanding) and will hide them behind some GOM. :D

Based on appearance and kid proofing, in walls.
On the other hand, only have in walls in the living room. Everything else is floor standing.
Did I mention my two year old just "re-calibrated" my subwoofer for me?

Bookshelf speakers are more pleasant to the eye than bulky floor standing speakers. I prefer a glossy look as it seems more modern in my opinion.

I love the solid look and the full range of sound produced by floor standing speakers.

I like traditional and my wife does too. But she would rather that I just have my own man cave where she would only have to look at the speakers when she wanted to. But she actually admitted she liked the sound. One victory.

Based on aesthetics alone: In wall and hidden

Since most of my HT use will be for movies or gaming, not seeing the speakers gives the illusion that the sound is coming from the screen (for the front speakers). Having the speakers out of the way for the surrounds makes it easier to decorate the room, as well as keeping the wife happy. :)

Speakers need to be as invisible as possible while still sounding good. In-wall speakers are not flexible enough because they cannot be moved or upgraded. So that leaves shelf speakers and wall-mounted speakers painted to blend into the background.

Floorstanders with wood finish. I live in a log house. I like wood.

Answer the poll above and explain your answer in this contest thread:

I picked the Floorstanders in a wood finish. I feel the look and sound of a good set of speakers are both important.

If we are talking strictly looks. I think its great to have amazing sound from a "hidden" source. Therefore I picked in wall or hidden. However, these speakers are no match to high-end floorstanding speakers and I do believe sound outweighs looks.

I voted "other." While good sound is most important, it'd be good if I could find a speaker with a slightly out-of-the-ordinary look, yet nothing too bizarre, like some of the huge robot-looking towers.

Besides wanting to have speakers with a little design flair, I'd like my next set of speakers to have a fine wood finish, whether they be bookshelves or towers.

I'm a big fan of nice wood grain finishes, and I like to see my speakers, not hide them away in the walls, so floorstanding models w/ wood grain finish is my preference for my main system. For the rest of the house though, I would like a nice set of inwalls for many of the other rooms as I would like audio in most rooms in my house. I have a lot of fine art in my house and I want to have my art and audio too, but having to put in floor standers or bookshelf models would clash some with the art I have in some rooms, so in those rooms & the kitchen & bath, I would like to just have quality sound without floor or shelf space taken or any visible distractions from the rest of the room.

I voted for wood floor standers, they can look so beautiful in a dedicated listening room.

wood always looks good except for the black painted wood. If you're gonna do that make it piano black (automotive type)
