I'd probably go with the bookshelf system unless a comparably priced on wall version sounds as good.

I'm a little reticent about putting holes in my walls and I'm doubting the wireless and soundbar version will sound better than my current 5.1 bookshelf system (Klispch Synergy series).

1.In wall 5.1 system- yes for a second room (den ) because you still get good theater sound with minimal impact 2.Front tower or bookshelf 5.1 or 7.1 system - yes a front tower 7.1 for my main theater because I believe it would have the best sound 3.Sound bar with simulated surround + a sub- yes for the master bedroom because it`s compact and still gives you the theater like effect 4.Smallest possible on wall solution- no because I have yet to hear one that was any good 5. Wireless surrounds or wireless system- no because the quality is not there yet 6.Other- Outdoor speakers because in the summer the wife and I spend most of are time in the garden

For my second system I would definitely be going with Front towers or bookshelf 5.1 or 7.1 system. I have heard many soundbars with simulated surround and they all seem too sharp to me. The highs are overpowering. I love the range of my 5.1 bookshelf system.

I might consider in-wall, but luckily my wife doesn't have a problem with visible speakers, so I don't need to go there. A decent tower/booksheld 5.1 or 7.1 is obviously the first choice. I'm curious about soundbars but they need more time I think. Smallest really holds no appeal...I suppose if they sounded as good as the real thing. Wireless isn't really a need for me, wires are our friend.

Contest Question: Pretend you are looking to purchase your first or second flat panel TV, which of the following speaker configurations would you consider? Why or why not?

  • In wall 5.1 system
  • Front towers or bookshelf 5.1 or 7.1 system
  • Soundbar with simulated surround plus a sub
  • Smallest possible on wall solution
  • Wireless surrounds or wireless system
  • Other?

  • Havn't heard a set of in-walls that I like yet. To dependant on the room.
  • Yup. It's the best choice and probably will be for quite some time.
  • I'll pass
  • Not a fan of in walls
  • Havn't seen wireless work well yet.
  • Other? Other? What about an all tactile transducer system ;)

For my primary screen, I'd only want a Front towers/bookshelf 5.1 system, or possibly a wireless system if a quality one presented itself.

I live in a rental, so in-wall is out of the question.
I don't have an appropriate space for simulated surround to work well.

A very small on-wall system is "meh"; for a primary system I want something better, for a secondary system surround isn't too important.

No need to pretend. I am in the process of building my second home theater system. I am looking to build the very best 7.1 bookshelf system within my budget. The reason is bookshelf speakers are not offensive to my wife whom I love very much. If I had my druthers I would be using towers for my fronts. She reluctantly lets me mount two large Polk Audio outdoor speakers (atrium 55's) in my bathroom so I figure the least I can do is settle for a bookshelf setup for my second theater room.

I would prefer front towers with 7.1 but unfortunately due to the WAF I need on wall.

1. NO,inwall i feel are to permanent and if i want to upgrade i have a hole in my wall.
2. Yes, individual towers/bookshels are the way to go and my first chooice. easily upgradable and tweakable.
3. NO, i dont believe soundbar works as good as they claim.
4. YES, if this wasnt in a critical listening enviroment this would be my second chooice.
5. i dont think wireless has been around long enough for me to consider it, to expensive.

Contest Question: Pretend you are looking to purchase your first or second flat panel TV, which of the following speaker configurations would you consider? Why or why not?

In wall 5.1 system: Since I already have what I think is a pretty high quality set up of stand-alone speakers, I would certainly consider this, especially (since I have my man cave system already) as a means to keep my wife both excited by and involved in the selection process. Especially since these things have really improved in recent years.

Front towers or bookshelf 5.1 or 7.1 system - However, in deference to me being an audio twit, or at least a wannabe, the purist in me would really want to pursue this option.

Soundbar with simulated surround plus a sub - Not an option in my current house owing to its open floor plan.

Smallest possible on wall solution - Ugghhhhh... you gotta be kidding, right. Is this a veiled reference to everybody's favorite cube speakers?

Wireless surrounds or wireless system - While the idea would make setting them up that much easier, I'd have to pass on this until the technology were a bit more ready for prime time.

Other? You mean like a boom box? No, these options pretty much do it for me.

So, if I were setting up my second system, I'd probably do in-walls. If it were my first, then I'd go with the stand alone speakers.

Due to space restraint and WAF, I would prefer a setup of bookshelf 5.1 system.

I am actually in the process of making this very decision! I just purchased a new Pioneer Elite and would like to get a 5.1 system.

I would consider the in-wall 5.1 system mainly because I have two cats and a Boxer puppy. Needless to say, I don't want to have to worry about my towers getting knocked over or chewed on. I also like the clutter-free aspect. My only reservation is the increased cost of installing them.

Second, I would consider bookshelf speakers for my fronts. I purchased a tv stand for my pioneer that would be wide enough to set speakers on either side. the back of my family room has shelving that would be perfect for rear/surround speakers.

Thanks for listening!

I would go with a 7.1 system with Front towers as I like to play my music, videos and movies loud. The other configurations limit on how loud you can hear your system. I do have a large living room.

Thanks Audioholics for this contest.

  • In wall 5.1 system - not consider, due to installation hurdle.
  • Front towers or bookshelf 5.1 or 7.1 system - consider, especially for main system, probably brings the best performance.
  • Soundbar with simulated surround plus a sub - consider strongly, because of convenience, especially attractive for second or bedroom system.
  • Smallest possible on wall solution - consider, for aesthetics, if price and performance were right.
  • Wireless surrounds or wireless system - consider, for convenience if price and performance were right.
  • Other?
3.1 system or 3.2 system - consider, for good sound with ease of installation.

I live in a small house with my TV sequestered in a tiny room away from the main entertaining area and living spaces.

Poor choices for their compromise of sound quality for aesthetics:
-Soundbar with simulated surround plus a sub
-Smallest possible on wall solution

Good solutions that just wouldn't fit my room:
-Front towers or bookshelf 5.1 or 7.1 system
-In wall 5.1 system
-Wireless surrounds or wireless system

Best compromise:
-Other: the 2.1 channel home theater. Uncompromising sound quality for music, with a little extra punch for the movies. In a little room, you hardly miss the surround sound.

7.1 system
Closest thing to going to the movies. Isn't that what we're all shooting for?

Actually 6.1 is the best. (one rear back channel) just make sure your rear back channel is a QS8 from axiom audio. Look at one and you'll see what I mean!

Since this would be my second flat screen, in a secondary location, I would start with a 3.1 system (R, L, C, sub). This would reduce cost while putting off the difficulty in wiring the surrounds.

First setup without a doubt would be the best 7.1 or 6.1 setup I could afford, either high end bookshelves with a very nice sub or middle range floorstanding with a smaller sub. This system would have to be a full effect HT system, as well as being able to pump music throughout the floor (not just room) that the system was located on (via volume or zone 2 if I wanted).

A second system would be for a smaller room and most likely I would do SMALL on wall or even in wall. Never a sound bar, maybe wireless. This system would likely see 1/4 the time and probably only 1/4 the volume that a main system would see, so sound quality and aesthetics win here.

Smallest possible on wall solution

Soon we will buy a projector and move our LCD flat panel to the living room as a second system. At that time I will be looking for the least visible, but still decent sounding, system I can find.

This would be for a second system that would go in our bedroom. Since we already have a killer system in our primary listening room, I wouldn't feel the need to achieve audio nirvana. I'd go with a soundbar and a sub for ease of installation and better aesthetics to match the flat panel (i.e., no need for speakers/wires to show in other parts of the room). The resulting trade off in sound quality would be more than offset by WAF (come on, I already got what I wanted for the main system).
