Accuracy and good bass at low volume levels works best for me, most of my home theater time is in the evening when others are sleeping, also, I feel the test of a great system is how well it reproduces effects at low volume, sometimes the high power amps can make up for a lower quality driver.

Be able to get down to 20 cleanly for movies, but still retain a clearly musical neutral base sound with a cross over at about 80.

accuracy

Accuracy is the most important factor when choosing a subwoofer. However this is not the only factor when I chose my subwoofer. I auditioned a few then decided to pick between a few similar units. Meaning they appeared to have similar accuracy. Then I made my decision on the look of the subwoofer and the small things (i.e. having binding posts instead of spring clips). So even though I feel accuracy is important it won't sell me on a particular subwoofer.

Contest Question: What features are most important in a home theater subwoofer?

Well, it is fairly easy to place a subwoofer out of sight, so aesthetics aren't incredibly important. Having a low level important is obviously fairly important. I also consider the quality of the sound to be more important than the power rating.

Contest Question: What features are most important in a home theater subwoofer? Ideally, no port noise, over-driven driver, and performance drop at (or below) 20 Hz.

Contest Question: What features are most important in a home theater subwoofer?

I want it all. Accuracy is the most crucial, but the sub also needs the extension and power to go with that accuracy.

A sub that's accurate to 30Hz isn't a sub, it's a boxed woofer. A "real" sub must be accurate and authorative below 20Hz, to successfully play it's part in any home theater.

I like very clean bass. Accuracy is absolute key for me. What good is slamming bass if it isn't accurate??

For a subwoofer, I take the necessity of quality and accuracy as a
given. There are plenty of competitive companies with excellent
offerings. The biggest differences tend to be in size and cost. When
I'm buying $400/pair bookshelf speakers for a bedroom or study,
I still want high-quality sound, but I also don't want to spend $1000
on a subwoofer or have a sub that could be mistaken for an end-table.

I ended up choosing an Onix UFW-10 for my living room (a good balance
of sound, price, size, and appearance). The new Onix X-sub is quite
tempting for my office or bedroom.

All your bass are belong to us.

I love good bass. War of the worlds comes to mind. :D

Nothing beats a good setup and an awsome mixed sound track. I love it when it goes real low and (appropriately) loud without distortion. Unfortunately everything in the house starts to rattle too.

I like the kind of bass that makes it feel real.

The accuracy is the most important thing to me. I love chest rumbling sound that is crisp and clean!

Output is nice and so is extension. However, given some reasonable amount of both, I'm more interested in quality. The bass needs to be accurate and not boomy. I don't want to hear the sub if the music or soundtrack doesn't call for it.

Not just sheer volume output but accurate
no one noter
deep extension past 20 hz
not too big as it will take over the whole family room

these are the qualities I look for in a sub purchase

Deep, powerful accurate bass and lots of headroom.

well it looks like I agree with most people on here that accuracy and quality are the most impoortant altough this isn't surprising when the site is called "audioholics".

I'm personally just looking for a sub that can fill in the bottom end but not stand out from the mains.

Of course ideally you want a sub that hits hard, looks great and is deadly accurate :)

edit - just did a little research on this sub. This pretty much exactly what I'm looking for - I'm tempted to buy one now but I should probably wait until the contest is over just in case. And if I do win...I'll take black please!

Quality extension is the most important thing, nobody likes bloated, boomy bass.

I chose output because the sub has to be able to fill the room IMO. Of course accurate tight bass is the key, but shaking the room is so darn important with regards to HT.

Sound quality is most important to me.
Earth shattering bass is nice but if it just "sounds" like a lot of low freq booming, I'd rather do without.
Oh yeah, a free sub is nice too!!!

I know I am probably not of the majority, but I like rediculously loud bass. If I am listening to music, I want to feel like I am in the club. I want to be able to feel my hair vibrating from the really loud bass.
