1. Have you heard of either of these free services?
I've heard of them, but don't use either

2. How do you currently play music from your computer on your home audio system?

I use a Squeezebox.v3 and the Squeezebox server on my PC to stream to my AVR.

3. Would you be interested in a powered speaker that you could plug into any AC outlet and then play music from your personal collection via your computer without any other components?

Yes, this would work well in both my bathroom and outside
porch. I would like just power and volume adjustments.

4. Do you currently own a smart phone? (iPhone or Android device?)
No, not yet. I'm waiting to see the Win7 phone specs.

1. Have you heard of either of these free services?
YES: Read about it a bit. Note, Airplay is only free if you go out and buy a new licensed Apple compatible product to do it with! I hate to have to upgrade my receiver or purchase another piece of kit just to stream music. I do have a Creative Labs X-Dock Wireless which I will be using if it has the range. I am going to be re-ripping all of my music soon to lossless format. Will use DBpowerAmp or something and convert to both AAC (iTunes) and LameMp3 (PS3). Not looking forward to all of that but will spread out the 1200+ albums over a series of months. that will allow me to use the PS3 if the X-dock does not have the range I need.

2. How do you currently play music from your computer on your home audio system? (Please detail your set up: Aperion Home Audio Link (HAL), Sonos, Squeezebox, Roku etc.)
At the moment I don't. But I am going to attempt a set up with Creative X-dock to the computer but will depend on the range of the receiver.

3. Would you be interested in a powered speaker that you could plug into any AC outlet and then play music from your personal collection via your computer without any other components?
If yes, where you would use such a speaker (bedroom, bathroom outdoors, kitchen etc.)? Maybe use it in the Master Bath. I could get rid of that crappy iPod dock/boom box in there.
What controls that you would expect this speaker to have (power, volume, etc.)? Well should have on/off and volume at minimum. I guess all other things could be set-up locally on the computer - playlist or song wise.
4. Do you currently own a smart phone? (iPhone or Android device?)
Yes- A Blackberry and Android- Droid 2 (wife's)

Thank you.

Both Apple and Microsoft are making it easier for music lovers to listen to their collections by offering free music streaming services through either Windows 7 or iTunes 10. Windows 7 certified devices utilize “Play-to” and Mac is offering “Airplay”. Both allow you to push music from your computer to a connected device that is certified for the service.

1. Have you heard of either of these free services?
YES, but I am not using either, I stream from computer through tversity to my phone using DLNA

2. How do you currently play music from your computer on your home audio system? (Please detail your set up: Aperion Home Audio Link (HAL), Sonos, Squeezebox, Roku etc.) I use windows media center to play back flac, or stream to my ps3 using playstation media server

3. Would you be interested in a powered speaker that you could plug into any AC outlet and then play music from your personal collection via your computer without any other components? Yes
If yes, where you would use such a speaker (bedroom, bathroom outdoors, kitchen etc.)? Bedroom, outdoors
What controls that you would expect this speaker to have (power, volume, etc.)? Power, volume, some sort of tone control

No
2. How do you currently play music from your computer on your home audio system? (Please detail your set up: Aperion Home Audio Link (HAL), Sonos, Squeezebox, Roku etc.)
I currently stream all my music from my Storage server to Popcorn Hour's that are located throughout my house. 1 for the Living Room, 1 for the Bedroom, and 1 for the main H/T area.
3. Would you be interested in a powered speaker that you could plug into any AC outlet and then play music from your personal collection via your computer without any other components?
Yes, I would love this, provided it wasn't limited to a proprietary streaming technology, or required a dedicated client on the server to stream music. Would HAVE TO support SMB, NFS, ect. I would love Power and Volume adjustments for my back yard area.
4. Do you currently own a smart phone? (iPhone or Android device?)
Yes I currently own a Droid2 that I can control my Popcorn Hour's with should I so choose.

  • NO
I have not heard of them. I'm still behind the times using Windows XP, and I'm pretty much anti- Apple/iTunes, so I tend not to keep up with what they offer these days.

2. How do you currently play music from your computer on your home audio system? (Please detail your set up: Aperion Home Audio Link (HAL), Sonos, Squeezebox, Roku etc.)
Play FLAC (and some MP3s) using Winamp. Audio is sent via USB to a NuForce uDAC, which is connected to an integrated amp (TCA Gizmo) that drives a pair of PSB Image B4 monitors, and Velodyne VMS-8 subwoofer.

3. Would you be interested in a powered speaker that you could plug into any AC outlet and then play music from your personal collection via your computer without any other components?
  • If yes, where you would use such a speaker (bedroom, bathroom outdoors, kitchen etc.)?
  • What controls that you would expect this speaker to have (power, volume, etc.)?
I'd definitely be interested in powered speakers. I currently have a pair of inexpensive powered speakers in my kitchen that my girlfriend uses to play music from here iPod (these are two 2-way speakers, not an ipod dock)... but would always be happy to upgrade. Then I'd move the cheaper pair to the bathroom.

As far as controls... Power and volume are a must... A HUGE bonus with be a remote with these controls as well.

4. Do you currently own a smart phone? (iPhone or Android device?)
Nope... still have an old school standard flip phone.

1. Have you heard of either of these free services? NO.

2. How do you currently play music from your computer on your home audio system?
I have a PC, and it hooked to my AVR (I also have a BR player with Pandora) that is hooked up to whole house audio. through another amp and volume controls in the rooms. I listen to the music on the PC or BR, and play either itunes or Pandora.

3. Would you be interested in a powered speaker that you could plug into any AC outlet and then play music from your personal collection via your computer without any other components? I would, and I wouild use it in some of the rooms that I could not access when I wired the house. I would use it in the bathrooms, and bedrroms unavailable. I would like it to have power, volume, and be able to select the songs I want to play.

4. Do you currently own a smart phone? (iPhone or Android device?) No

1. I have heard of both services, but used neither.
2. I download music from my PC to my iPod, which I then connect to my receiver via its iPod dock.
3. I would be interested in that type of speaker and would use it in my garage. Useful controls would be power, volume, and skip-to-the-next-track. A remote would be handy for this.
4. I use a Blackberry, but am ashamed to admit it :)

1. Have you heard of either of these free services?

No - I use my DLNA certified phone to push/play music from my computer.

2. How do you currently play music from your computer on your home audio system? (Please detail your set up: Aperion Home Audio Link (HAL), Sonos, Squeezebox, Roku etc.)

I use a HTPC hooked up to my receiver for all computer based music. The music is stored on an external hard drive in another room, I mostly stream FLAC files w/MediaMonkey.

3. Would you be interested in a powered speaker that you could plug into any AC outlet and then play music from your personal collection via your computer without any other components?

* If yes, where you would use such a speaker (bedroom, bathroom outdoors, kitchen etc.)?
* What controls that you would expect this speaker to have (power, volume, etc.)?

Yes, I could see several uses for this, outdoors would likely be a prime example, perhaps Kitchen indoors. The speaker would need a smooth GUI, ability to play FLAC, volume, power. Remote would be nice as well. Touchscreen or physical controls, either one is sufficient.

4. Do you currently own a smart phone? (iPhone or Android device?)

Yes to a smart phone (Nokia E72), happy to say no to iPhone or Android.

3. Would you be interested in a powered speaker that you could plug into any AC outlet and then play music from your personal collection via your computer without any other components?
3. Yes. I think kitchen most used place for me. Then if its easily portable maybe move it around inside garage or out side patio. I could see having a basic unit with volume control and alittle higher priced one withe EQ presets and treble/ bass adjust.

4. Do you currently own a smart phone? (iPhone or Android device?)
4. No.

1. Up until now, I had not heard of these services.

2. Either we hook up an iPod to the iPod cable on my receiver or we put a bunch of MP3s on a memory stick and plug it into one of my Oppo's USB ports.

3. That sounds kinda cool. So, sure, I'd be interested in it. But it also sounds like a technology that will only have a very short life span or a very limited appeal as I gotta believe that doing it over the air would be better instead of transmitting the digital signal over the AC power lines.

  • If yes, where you would use such a speaker (bedroom, bathroom outdoors, kitchen etc.)?
    • Kitchen
    • Bathroom
    • Bedroom
    • Patio
  • What controls that you would expect this speaker to have (power, volume, etc.)?

  • Power
  • Volume
  • Input select
  • Access to internet music server sites like Pandora

4. I do not have a smart phone.

Thanks for the chance.

I currently run TVERSITY on my music PC and stream it through the XBOX 360 to my home audio system.

3. Would you be interested in a powered speaker that you could plug into any AC outlet and then play music from your personal collection via your computer without any other components?
I would be interested in speakers that do that. They would probably reside in my kitchen, bedrooms, and out on my deck. Those locations are all on different floors then my home audio system.

No, I don't believe that I have heard of either of these services.

2. How do you currently play music from your computer on your home audio system? (Please detail your set up: Aperion Home Audio Link (HAL), Sonos, Squeezebox, Roku etc.)
I connect via AppleTV right now, but at home, I often listen to XM, not music from my PC.

3. Would you be interested in a powered speaker that you could plug into any AC outlet and then play music from your personal collection via your computer without any other components?
I think it would be nice to have one which could plug into a computer or any other line level audio source and get audio anywhere. Just plugging into a PC is very limiting to my experience, and it would be nice to get my TV audio on the deck so I can listen to the game. Or put some speakers in the guest room when company comes over to visit. If they are wireless, then I would want a bit of portability so they can be moved around between spaces, and a battery powered version for outdoor use certainly would be a plus.

For control, I would prefer a remote which could store in the speaker that could control volume, and perhaps track up/down functionality as well as power. I always recommend that manufacturers include discrete IR controls for universal remote control compatibility.

4. Do you currently own a smart phone? (iPhone or Android device?)
I have a Blackberry which is, by far, the most stupid phone I've ever owned. I prefer my Razr. ;) I will probably be getting an iPhone around Christmas time this year.
